Augustine ('Gus') Healy (1904-1987) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who would later serve Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. Anna Neagle is standing on his right. Neagle was the stage name of Dame Florence Marjorie Wilcox, DBE. She was a popular actor during the thirties, forties and fifties best known for playing many historical characters including Nell Gwyn in Nell Gwyn (Herbert Wilcox, 1934) and Let's Make Up (also known as Lilacs in the Spring) (Herbert Wilcox, 1954). Neagle was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1952 for her services to drama so would have been Dame Anna Neagle during her visit to Cork. The drinks reception was held at the Martini Terrace, an iconic landmark that sits on the top of the 18-storey New Zealand House in London. New Zealand House, built in 1959, is a controversial building being the only skyscraper in this part of London near Trafalgar Square. Gus Healy, seated on the far left, was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who would later serve Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. He is seated next to the artist Frank Sanquest, in half-rimmed spectacles and wearing his trade-mark dickie bow. Sanquest (1912-2008) was a Cork-born artist who worked for many years as resident set-designer for the Cork Opera House before it burnt down in 1954. He was on the board of the Southern Theatre Group with Dan Donovan and James N. Healy; they often toured with John B Keane plays, starring the Cork actor Michael Twomey who also came to the Cork Film Festival. From 1940 to 1987 Sanquest worked as the Arts Editor for the Cork Examiner and would attend festival press conferences for the paper. The fair-haired actor Shane Briant, in a suede jacket accessorised with a cravat, is standing on the left listening to the conversation. Wetherell, at the centre, in a dark-patterned dress, is turned to her companion and smiling. Both Wetherell and Briant worked together in the British horror film Demons of the Mind directed by Peter Sykes which was released in 1972 – the year that this photo was taken at the festival. Born in 1943, Virginia Wetherell was an English actor best known for her roles in Hammer horror films such as Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde (Roy Ward Baker, 1971) and aforementioned Demons of the Mind. She also appeared, as the naked actor tempting Malcolm McDowell as Alex, in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange in 1971. Wetherell had a large body of television work throughout the 1960s to the 1980s, including the part of Dyoni in the first Dalek story series of Doctor Who. In 1971 Wetherell opened a vintage clothes shop in London’s Notting Hill, known as Virginia, shutting down in 2015 when Wetherell (now Bates) turned 72.  Wetherell's companion in this picture is the actor and novelist, London-born Shane Briant. Briant studied at Trinity College Dublin before becoming an actor best known for his roles in Hammer Film Productions. He has many television credits, both in England and Australia where he settled, as well as film credits including the British Cold War thriller The Mackintosh Man (John Huston, 1973) with Paul Newman and James Mason (who can also be found in this archive), and as Clifford Chatterley in Lady Chatterley's Lover (Just Jaeckin, 1981). Briant's first short film, A Message from Fallujah (Richard Gibson, Shane Briant, 2005), won a 'Best of the Fest' award at the 2005 Los Angeles International Short Film Festival and was considered for an Academy Award that year. The convivial group are at the festival club, standing in front of a poster advertising the French-Belgian film Rendezvous at Bray (André Delvaux, 1971). Deirdre O’Callaghan is an international harpist and singer; she was married to the Irish athlete Noel Carroll from 1964 until his untimely death in 1998. Carroll was a middle-distance runner who competed for Ireland in the 1964 Toyko Olympics and the 1968 games in Mexico. He was one of the founders of the Dublin Marathon and the winner of the marathon now receives the Noel Carroll Memorial Trophy in his name. While the photo is marked 1968, the Rendezvous at Bray poster allows us to provisionally date the photo after the release of this film. Rendezvous at Bray starred the Danish-French actor Anna Karina (1940-2019) who acted in several films made by her ex-husband Jean-Luc Goddard, including A Woman Is a Woman (1961), My Life to Live (1962), and Band of Outsiders (1964) (with the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1MKUJN7vUk">iconic line-dance scene in the Parisian café with Sami Frey and Claude Brasseur</a>!). Karina also starred in Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Chinese Roulette (1976) which he supposedly wrote for her. The archive has some film stills from Fassbinder’s Querelle (1982) with the actor Brad Davis and Günther Kaufmann – the sometimes lover of Fassbinder.
