Suzanne Macdougald (1945-) was a celebrated Irish model during the 1960s and 1970s. She was one of a small cohort of models, including Ann Davis, Adrienne Ring, and Grace O’Shaughnessy, that would become well-known during this time working for the designers Ib Jorgensen and Sybil Connolly. The model Grace O’Shaughnessy also came to the Cork Film Festival during the 1960s. Macdougald worked as a hostess on RTÉ’s first quiz show Jackpot (1962-1965) assisting Terry Wogan who had replaced the original host Gay Byrne. She later set up the Lad Lane Gallery in Dublin before selling up and joining Solomon Gallery in Dublin’s Powerscourt Townhouse Centre, eventually becoming its owner and director. Macdougald retired from the gallery in 2013 which was then taken over by Tara Murphy. The Fianna Fáil politician Jack Lynch (1917-1999) was born in Shandon, Cork. He went to school in the North Mon and was by all accounts a great sportsman originally playing with Glen Rovers in Blackpool, Cork. Lynch loved sport and would credit it with teaching him how to be part of a team and how to cope with victory and defeat. He worked as parliamentary secretary for Eamon de Valera and succeeded Sean Lemass in 1966. Lynch would go on to serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. Crosbie and Breen, on the left of the photo, are meeting festival delegates off the Aer Lingus flight behind them. The photo identifies only the actor and director Lionel Jeffries and Larry Doyle. Lionel Jeffries (1926-2010), with his distinctive moustache, was an English actor, director and screenwriter. He served in the Second World War and was awarded the campaign medal Burma Star for his contribution to the war effort. Jeffries has an extensive filmography but is perhaps best known for The Railway Children (1970) which he wrote and directed. We note that while this photo is dated 1960s it might be 1964 as the Columbia-produced film The First Men in the Moon (Nathan Juran, 1964), starring Jeffries, was screened at the film festival that year on 17 September 1964. Columbia executives were also in attendance and might be included in this picture. The group, dressed for a cold day, all smile for the camera with Dermot Breen, on the far right, hand in pocket. Ronald ‘Ronnie’ Shiner stands on the far left of the photo with his arm over the shoulder of his companion. Shiner (1903-1966) was a British stand-up comedian and comedy actor who worked on the stage, as well as television and film. He has an extensive filmography and a career highlight includes the stage version of Worm’s Eye View (1945 to 1947) followed by a film version in 1952 with Diana Dors. In 1962, around the time this photo was taken, he had made a TV version of Worm’s Eye View for the BBC. Shiner was the subject of This is Your Life in 1958 when he was surprised by Eamon Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre. Reportedly he insured his distinctive nose, with Lloyds of London, for $30,000. While this photo is marked 1960, the RTÉ archive has a news broadcast, dated 17 September 1962, of Shiner attending the opening of the festival with the German actor Ingeborg Schöner. Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Lord Mayor Seán O’Leary, scissors in hand, and unidentified festival guests at the opening of the Harp Lager-sponsored festival club. The Fine Gael politician Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, and judge who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972-1973. He studied at the University College Cork (UCC) before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003.
