The photo is dated ‘guess 1960s’ but we can see a poster for the 1977 American mystery film The Late Show (Robert Benton, 1977) taped to the wall of the press room next to a chalk-marked blackboard. This allows us to date the press conference to 1977 (or later). The Late Show was directed by Robert Benton and produced by the award-winning Robert Altman and starred Art Carney and Lily Tomlin whose names feature on the poster. Title A name given to the resource Philip Green conducting St Patrick's Mass Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Philip Green, Festival Mass, St Patrick's Mass Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the English film and television composer and conductor Philip Green. In this picture Green is conducting his composition St Patrick’s Mass, which was televised live from the Franciscan Church in Cork for the opening of the 1971 Cork Film Festival. He is shown in profile, leaning over the music lectern, arms slightly raised as he concentrates on reading the score, whilst conducting under the bright glare of a stage light. Philip Green was born in East London in 1911 and had an extensive career in film-music composition. He was appointed the musical director for the Rank Organisation (who had strong links with the festival in its earlier years) and composed hundreds of film scores and themes for popular television programmes during his career. His stock music production work even features on The Ren and Stimpy Show and SpongeBob SquarePants. However his conversion to Catholicism, in the early 1970s, contributed to his creation of the St Patrick's Mass, which he composed, produced, and recorded in 1970, before bringing it to Cork in 1971. Green died in 1982 but his recording of St Patrick’s Mass, performed by Canon Sydney MacEwan and Trinity Chorale, is still available and can be streamed on-line. Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the English film producer Greg Smith in conversation with the Irish producer Noel Pearson and Ciara Scott. Given the background décor of Harp Lager-sponsored umbrellas, we might guess that this picture was taken at the festival club. Greg Smith, in a light-coloured jacket on the far right, has his back turned to us as he chats with his companions. While the identity of Pearson and Scott (whose name cannot be verified) (perhaps Ciarín Scott?) is noted with a question mark at the back of the photo, this is probably the Dublin-born film and theatrical producer Noel Pearson who worked on the Academy award-winning My Left Foot (Jim Sheridan, 1989) starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Brenda Fricker, and Cyril Cusack. Pearson also produced The Field (Jim Sheridan, 1990) starring Richard Harris, and Dancing at Lughnasa (Pat O’Connor, 1998) with Meryl Streep, Kathy Burke, and Michael Gambon. He originally managed the Dubliners before moving into theatre and becoming the artistic director of the Abbey Theatre where he staged Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa, before adapting it to film in 1998. His production company, Ferndale Productions, also produced The Secret Scripture (Jim Sheridan, 2016), based on the novel by Sebastian Barry, and starring Rooney Mara and Vanessa Redgrave. The film producer Greg Smith was behind a series of X-rated successful movies during the 1970s including Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), Confessions of a Pop Performer (Norman Cohen, 1975), Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Claire Brough, 1976), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977). His collaborations with the Irish director Norman Cohen also include Spike Milligan’s war memoirs: Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (Norman Cohen, 1973) and Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977) starring his then-wife Lynda Bellingham and Pamela Stephenson, both of whom are in the archive. (This photo is dated 1960 but we might guess that it is closer to the 1970s given other images of him in the archive.) The photo identifies the producer Greg Smith, William (Bill) Harpur, former film censor Sheamus Smith, Sheila Hampson, and Hillary O’Herlihy, the wife of Bill O’Herlihy. They are standing together, drink in hand, some smiling for the camera. Sheamus Smith, wearing his distinctive glasses, stands on the left. Smith started working as a cameraman at the newly formed Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) in 1961 before becoming a producer and director with the station in 1963. The following decade he was appointed managing director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975 and was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). He published his memoir Off Screen (Gill and MacMillan) in 2007. The producer Greg Smith (1939-2009), in a light-coloured jacket, stands on the far right of the photo. Smith owned a talent agency in London where he signed on the Irish film-maker Norman Cohen with whom turned a series of risqué best-selling paperback books, by Christopher Wood, into a successful run of ‘confessions’ movies including Confessions of a Pop Performer (Norman Cohen, 1975), Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Claire Brough, 1976), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977). He went on to produce Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977), starring his then-wife Lynda Bellingham who was also at the Cork Film Festival. Hillary O’Herlihy was married to the Cork-born, Glasheen-raised, RTÉ television broadcaster, and Irish Film Board Chairman Bill O’Herlihy. O’Herlihy (1938-2015) was a household name best known for his sports coverage, along with co-presenters Eamon Dunphy and John Giles, on programmes such as Sunday Sport and Sports Stadium and in his time presented 10 FIFA World Cups and 10 Summer Olympic Games. He was a keen cinephile and brought this to his work at the Irish Film Board. O’Herlihy promoted the film industry and in particular, was keen to develop filming in rural Ireland. He also worked for some time as PR for the Cork Film Festival where he emphasised the focus on Irish film.
