We have no information on Coomber but recognise Towb as the popular actor from Northern Ireland who was familiar on screen as well as stage. He began his acting career travelling with theatrical groups on both sides of the border and following a move to London in the early 1950s his presence on the British stage was cemented, in particular with his work at the National Theatre. The film critic Eric Shorter wrote of him: “Towb was one of the gentlest, most imaginative and thoughtful actors of his generation… He was always on the stage if he could afford it – taking television and film work to balance out his income.” (The Guardian, 30.07.2009.) Towb, standing on the left of this picture, is turned towards the Mitchells who both hold a liqueur glass and cigarette in hand. Harry Towb (1925-2009) was a popular actor from Northern Ireland who began his acting career travelling with theatrical groups on both sides of the border. His work at the English National Theatre was highly regarded including parts in Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs (1986), Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1996), and Nikolai Erdman’s Russian comedy The Mandate (2004). The film critic Eric Shorter wrote of him: "Towb was one of the gentlest, most imaginative and thoughtful actors of his generation… He was always on the stage if he could afford it – taking television and film work to balance out his income." Mitchell was a prolific writer, writing under his own name and the pen names James Munro and Patrick O McGuire. He wrote the successful television series When the Boat Comes In (BBC) which ran between 1976 and 1981. Around the time of this photo, dated 1972, Mitchell had just completed a successful run of Callan (Thames Television), which ran between 1969 and 1972, starring Edward Woodward as the hitman David Callan. Weis and Le Beau are shown sitting on a bench smiling while they sign scraps of paper and autograph books for the ladies that surround them excitedly. On the right Scholz is leaning against the bench and laughing as she signs her signature. All three are dressed in the distinctive fashion of late 1960s be it a floppy hat, pearls, a bright ribbon in the hair, or a paisley-print dress. Behind them there is evident joy in the faces of the staff as they jostle around the actors seeking an autograph. The photograph identifies the location as the Beamish and Crawford brewery and, based on the wooden panelling in this picture, this might be the tudor-framed reception room of the iconic Counting House on South Main Street in Cork. The brewery was established in 1792 by William Beamish and William Crawford. It was once Ireland’s biggest brewery until overtaken by Guinness in 1833. It closed in March 2009 and its site on South Main Street, is currently being converted into student accommodation and a possible events centre. It has a special place in the cultural memory of Corkonians and former Beamish workers note that the brewery was more than just a workplace but was the very ‘heart of Cork’. (Barry Roche, 'Nazi links and the colourful history of Beamish and Crawford', Irish Times, 27.10.2015; Donal Ó Drisceoil and Diarmuid Ó Drisceoil, Beamish and Crawford: the History of an Irish Brewery, Collins Press, 2015) Eva-Ingeborg Scholz (1928-) was a German film and television actor known for The Girl from the Marsh Croft (Gustav Ucicky, 1958), Emil and the Detectives (Peter Tewksbury, 1964) and the televison show Tatort (1970) for which she won a German Actors Award. The Belgian actor Bettine La Beau (1932-2015) was known for her television, film and radio appearances in the UK. In particular she would be associated with the long-running Benny Hill Show (1969) from 1971 to 1972, The Prisoner (1967), and Call My Bluff. She had an uncredited appearance in the first James Bond film Dr. No (Terence Young, 1962) and small parts in a number of films. Her radio appearances included regular appearances on the BBC World Service programme Animal, Vegetable, Mineral? Her personal life is poignant as she was separated from her parents during World War II and held in two concentration camp during the Holocaust before escaping eventually to England. She would later work as a public speaker speaking about her experience of the Holocaust and authored a book Help Yourself to Happiness in 1999. The third actor in this picture is Heidelinde Weis (1940-). She is an Austrian actor whose film work around the time she came to Cork, in 1969, include The Man Outside (Samuel Gallu, 1967), and Something for Everyone (Harold Prince,1970). Her 1964 film directed by Michael Pfleghar, Die Tote von Beverly Hills (Dead Women From Beverly Hills), was re-released in 2019 as a digitally restored HD version. It has a place in German film history for its invitation to Cannes in 1964, where it won the Palme d’Or and for taking the ‘Bambi’ award for most artistically valuable film in 1965. Title A name given to the resource Heinz Rühmann and Dermot Breen Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Dermot Breen, Heinz Rühmann, Germany Description An account of the resource These black and white photos are of the German film actor Heinrich (Heinz) Rühmann and the film festival director Dermot Breen.  Heinz Rühmann, standing on the left in these photos, was born in 1902. He was a prolific German film and television actor who acted in over 100 films in his lifetime and is considered a film legend for his contribution to the German film industry. Rühmann managed to court all sectors of German society including the Third Reich, where seemingly he was a favourite of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels, as well as the diarist Ann Frank, who had his picture pinned on the wall of her hiding place, where it still hangs on display today. Rühman's filmography includes Er Kannes Nicht Lassen (Alex von Ambesser, 1962), based on the Father Brown stories by GK Chesterton, and the Hollywood-produced Ship of Fools (Stanley Kramer, 1965) with Vivien Leigh and Lee Marvin. His final film role was as Konrad in Faraway, So Close (1993) directed by Wim Wenders and starring Peter Falk and Nastassja Kinski. Rühmann died in 1994 and was posthumously awarded the 'Goldene Kamera' in 1995 for his contribution to German cinema. The three stand in a huddle having a conversation, oblivious to the camera, while a young boy in the background catches the picture as it's taken. Hassall came to Cork in 1977 during a time of hiatus in her film career which mostly consisted of bawdy comedies and horror movies. Her filmography includes Carry on Loving (Gerald Thomas, 1970) with Sid James, Joan Sims and Kenneth Williams, El Condor (John Guillermin, 1970), When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (Val Guest, 1970), and Incense for the Damned (Robert Hartford-Davis,1972) with Patrick Macnee and Peter Cushing. Her final film role was in the James Bond spoof Licensed to Love and Kill (Lindsay Shonteff) in 1979. Hassall had a turbulent personal life and died by suicide in 1980, age only 38. The festival director, Dermot Breen, on the right in this photo, would also die unexpectedly, age 54, in the year following this picture in 1978. Title A name given to the resource Iranian film producer Vasgen Badal and Norma Crosbie Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Vasgen Badal, Norma Crosbie Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the film producter Vasgen Badal and Norma Crosbie greeting each other. Both are in formal wear and Badal looks on, vaguely distracted, while Norma Crosbie, dressed in a white lace dress, leans in to kiss him. The photo is dated 1958 and we note from the 1959 Festival of Cork Programme that Badal was presented with a statuette of St. Finbarr that year by Jack Lynch, TD, for the documentary Dreamroad of the World (Hans Domnick, 1958). Badal was an Iranian-born film producer and distributor who moved to Germany as a young man where he learnt about film and set up the film company 'Badal-Filmproduktion.' He produced a number of films in the thirties and forties including a Nazi propaganda film Roter Nebel (UA, 1941) which was released after the German attack on the USSR in June 1941. Vasgen Badal died in 1959 - a year after this photo was taken. As so little is known about him we are fortunate to have images of him in the archive. Hickey stands on the right of the photo in a check shirt. While Hickey is best known for playing the part of 'Benji Riordan' in the long-running Irish series The Riordans (RTÉ), his film and stage work is extensive. His credits include My Left Foot (Jim Sheridan, 1989), Breakfast on Pluto (Neil Jordan, 2005), and What Richard Did (Lenny Abrahamson, 2012). In 2017 he starred in an award-winning documentary Feats of Modest Valour (Mia Mullarkey and Alice McDowell, 2017) about people living with Parkinson’s Disease which won a New York film festival award that year. Hickey passed away in May 2021 with tributes paid by President Michael D. Higgins. Father Burke was a friend of the festival since its inception and he appears in the archive in a photo taken during the first film festival in 1956. Cornelius ('Con') Howard (1925-2009) was a founding member of the Merriman Summer School in addition to his career as a diplomat. He was attached to the Irish embassies in both London and Washington during his tenure. It is noted that by all accounts he was an affable and skillful diplomat despite not achieving more recognition for his work. A bearded Cohen, wearing a light-coloured utility jacket, is smiling as he chats with Breen. While there are few images of Norman Cohen in the archive, his fingerprints stretch into the archive via the producer Greg Smith, the actors James Mason, Lynda Bellingham, Linda Hayden, and Pamela Stephenson – all of whom were in Cork during the early 1970s. Norman Cohen’s legacy is tied up with a series of risqué X-certificate rated comedies that he worked on such as Confessions of a Pop Performer (1975) and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (1977) starring Bellingham and Hayden both of whom are in the archive. He also produced and directed The London Nobody Knows (1967) with James Mason, Spike Milligan’s Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (1973) and Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (1977), based on the book by Leslie Thomas, and starring Bellingham and Stephenson. Around the time of this picture he had directed Dad’s Army in 1971 based on the popular BBC sitcom of the same name. Cohen's production of Brendan Behan’s Dublin (1966), sometimes misattributed to the BBC, was made by his production company Norcon with the producer Greg Smith – who produced many of his pictures. Written by the Irish director, actor and writer Carolyn Swift, the twenty-nine minute film was narrated by Ray McAnally as Behan, and the soundtrack was supplied by The Dubliners. It was first shown at the Cork Film Festival in September 1966 supporting the MGM film Woman Without a Face (also known as Mister Buddwing) (Delbert Mann, 1966), starring Jean Simmons and James Garner.
