The delegates are not identified but we recognise the English actor Linda Hayden standing at the foot of the Aer Lingus stairway with Breen. Nearby two members of the British Airways cabin crew stand close by – they are wearing a uniform designed by Sir Hardy Amies (1909-2003), official dressmaker to the Queen. This particular uniform was introduced in 1972 and replaced in 1977 which helps us date this picture, dated 1970s, further. The English actor David Hemmings stands at the bottom left of the photo with his arm around an unidentified delegate. Behind him, in a light coloured dress, his then partner Prudence de Casembroot, is seen looking off into the distance. Both Linda Hayden and David Hemmings were stars of British cinema during the 1970s. Above them on the stairway, a contingent of festival delegates, a few of whom are wearing festival ribbons on their lapel, pose for the camera. The airport is not identified but we suggest the background might be of the pier building at Dublin Airport. The photos are undated, but we might suggest they are from the late 1980s/early 1990s. We include the second photo of an unidentified person for its similarity to the first photo. It shows a festival colleague sitting in the same white-washed festival office as Hannigan, with its fern-like plant on the office cabinet and a poster of the German short Tour d'Amour (Veit El-Mer, 1989) which helps us date this image. The first photo shows Hannigan, mug in hand, working at his office desk under the painted cladding of the vaulted ceiling. Cork-born Hannigan had a keen interest in film since his time at University College Cork (UCC) as a member of its film society. He is a former member of the Irish Film Board, the European Film Academy, and worked as a programmer for the Irish Film Institute in the 1990s. As co-director of the Triskel Arts Centre in the eighties, Hannigan worked with Theo Dorgan, and together they ran the film festival after the resignation of O'Sullivan in 1985. In 2013, following his departure from the film festival, Hannigan set up the <a href="https://indiecork.com/">IndieCork Film Festival</a> with festival programmer Úna Feely who had worked for the Cork festival for many years. The photo, dated 1972, was taken at the festival club. Virginia Wetherell, standing on the far left wearing an ornately fashioned dress, worked in Hammer horror productions including Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde (Roy Ward Baker, 1971) and Demons of the Mind (Peter Sykes, 1972), both of which were released around the time she came to visit the Cork festival in 1972. She has a large body of television work throughout the 1960s to the 1980s, including the part Dyoni in the first Dalek story series of Doctor Who. Wetherell was married to the English actor Ralph Bates (1940-1991) who was educated in Trinity College Dublin and made his stage debut at the Gate Theatre in Dublin in Shaw’s You Never Can Tell in 1963. Suzanna Leigh, standing on the right in a light-coloured dress, also starred in Hammer horror films during the early seventies including The Deadly Bees (Freddie Francis, 1967) and Son of Dracula (Freddie Francis, 1974) starring Ringo Starr, earning her a cult following amongst horror fans. Her personal life was of great interest to the press of the day and her boyfriends included the actors Richard Harris, Steve McQueen, and Michael Caine. Leigh’s Hollywood career was cut short due to a union row about foreign actors in Hollywood and she would return to England. In 2000 she published her memoirs, Paradise, Suzanna Style, where she describes her encounters with various film stars and directors including Roman Polanski, Peter Finch and Otto Preminger - who also came to the Cork festival with his film St Joan (1957). Title A name given to the resource German actor Ferdy Mayne with Michael Twomey Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Ferdy Mayne, Michael Twomey Description An account of the resource <ol start="346"></ol> This is a black and white photo of the German-born actor Ferdy Mayne on stage with the Irish actor Michael Twomey.  Mayne on the left of this photo, with his distinctive dark eye brows, is speaking into the microphone while Twomey looks on, papers in hand. Born in Cork, Michael Twomey (1933-2017) grew up on the Mardyke and attended the Presentation Brothers College. Twomey will be remembered in Cork, and beyond, for his two-hander Cha and Miah with his friend Frank Duggan on the RTÉ television show Hall’s Pictorial Weekly. His other stage work included work with the playwright John B Keane for whom he played in many of his productions, including Many Young Men of Twenty, The Year of the Hiker and Sharon’s Grave. He gave his last stage performance as in 2015 two years before his death. In 2013, along with Frank Duggan and Billa O’Connell, Twomey was awarded the Freedom of Cork City for his “unwavering lifetime contribution to professional and amateur theatre, arts, drama and song.” (The Irish Times, 09.09.2017) The actor Ferdinand ‘Ferdy’ Mayne, was born in Germany in 1916. Being a Jew, he was sent to England from Germany as a child to stay with his aunt and later attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the Old Vic School. A fluent German speaker he was in demand for propaganda broadcasts during the Second World War and supposedly operated as an informant for the M15. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career. His stage work includes the role of Max in the long-running Rodgers and Hammerstein production The Sound of Music. Mayne would later achieve international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including head vampire in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate, Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968), and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams (who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo). Mayne later featured in Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with Hannelore Elsner, who was in Cork too around the same time as this photo, and he also worked with Kubrick in Barry Lyndon (Stanley Kubrick, 1975).  In his later years Mayne worked mainly in Europe where he was a favourite with German audiences, and lived in America, working until the late 1990s. His final film role was as General Karl von Weber in the neo-Nazi political thriller The Killers Within (Paul Leder, 1995) before he returned to England, where he died in 1998 following the onset of Parkinson’s Disease. Margaret Kerrigan, sitting on the far right next to David Kelly, was the wife of the labour politician Patrick Kerrigan, who served Cork as Lord Mayor from 1973 to 1974. He was nominated to the 13th Seanad by Liam Cosgrave, the then-Taoiseach, where he served until 1977. Kerrigan won a seat in the Cork City constituency in the 1977 general election and took his seat that year before dying two years later, age 51. They had four children, one of whom, Cathal Kerrigan, worked as a librarian in UCC for many years before his retirement in 2020. He recently collaborated with the Germany-based artist Padraig Robinson on his book Gaze Against Imperialism (Metaflux Publishing, 2019). The actor David Kelly appears in the archive on a number of occasions. Around the time of this photo, which is dated 1972 – but it might be 1973 or 1974 to coincide with the mayoralty of Patrick Kerrigan – Kelly had just completed the rarely seen 1973 British comedy film Never Mind the Quality, Feel the Width (Ronnie Baxter, 1973) which also starred the Irish actor Joe Lynch (1925-2001). We have a few pictures of David Kelly in the archive but this is the only one that identifies his wife the actor Laurie Morton. Like Kelly she too worked on the television series Strumpet City (1980), as well as Snakes and Ladders (Trish McAdam,1996) and the Irish comedy film Adam & Paul (2004) directed by Lenny Abrahamson and starring Tom Murphy and Mark O’Halloran. Their daughter Miriam Kelly is also an actor and voiceover artist who has worked with The Abbey Theatre and The Royal Shakespeare Company. A bespectacled Coomber, wearing a light-coloured suit and turtle neck jumper, is shown seated at a table scattered with tableware, an ashtray, and some notes. Behind him a poster for the film The Eagle Has Landed (John Sturges, 1976) is pinned to the paisley-print wallpaper. The Eagle Has Landed was a British war film based on the 1975 book by Jack Higgins. The cast included Michael Caine and Donald Sutherland as well as the English actor Judy Geeson in a supporting role. Geeson also came to the film festival and her image can be found in the archive. We note that this photo is dated 1972, but the correct date might be 1976 or beyond given the release date of The Eagle Has Landed in 1976. Hayden, in a light-coloured jumpsuit, sits on the edge of a small round table looking down at the enamelled glass-trimmed trophy which sits on a wooden base with an inscribed plaque. As far as we can determine the trophy is engraved Presented by the Commission of the European Communities, and might be presented to the festival as part of the Commission’s support of the festival through their Creative Europe MEDIA programme. Linda Hayden came to Cork on a number of occasions and was a favourite of the photographers, often photographed with fellow actor Lynda Bellingham with whom she starred in the Confessions series of movies. Born in 1953 she was best known for her roles in British horror films and sex comedies such as Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977) and the ‘video-nasty’ Exposé (James Kenelm Clarke, 1976) which was re-released with cuts, as Stalker (Martin Kemp, 1997). Controversially Hayden appeared, age 15, in the 1968 British drama film Baby Love (Alastair Reid) in which she acted the part of a young girl who seduces her adoptive family after her mother commits suicide. She would have been too young to see her own movie which was rated X in British cinemas and abroad. The New York Times noted that Baby Love was: “… meaningful and even moving. Baby Love however is basically a chiller, like the dripping water with the initial credits – a drop, a trickle, and a cold flow.” She followed this foray into horror films with Hammer’s Taste the Blood of Dracula (Peter Sasdy,1970) starring Christopher Lee, and The Blood on Satan’s Claw (Piers Haggard, 1971) before making her name with the Confession comedies so beloved of the seventies. Hayden was the partner of the actor Robin Askwith for some time in the 1970s who also starred in the Confessions sex comedy series. Askwith would be the best man at the wedding of Lynda Bellingham and the film producer Greg Smith’s wedding – both of whom were at the Cork Film Festival in the 1970s. O'Leary stands at the microphone, notes in hand, and looks out to an unseen audience. Behind him we note the crystal decanter of whiskey which would often accompany a festival award presentation in the early days. The Fine Gael politician Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, and judge who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972-1973. He studied at the University College Cork (UCC) before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. In a career that was distinguished and varied, he noted that holding the Mayoralty of Cork was one of the greatest honours of his life. He died in 2006, age 65.
