Born in 1935, Julian Glover is an English actor of stage, television and film including The Empire Strikes Back (aka Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back) (Irvin Kershner, 1980), For Your Eyes Only (John Glen, 1981), and as the voice of Aragog, the giant spider in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) directed by Chris Columbus. Most recently he had a recurring role in Game of Thrones (2011-2016) as Grand Maester Pycelle, and has appeared in an episode of the historical television series The Crown (2019). Around the time of this photo, dated 1972, Glover had appeared in Nicholas and Alexandra (Franklin J Schaffner, 1971), and Antony and Cleopatra (1972) directed by Charlton Heston who also played the main role of Mark Antony. The film was made by Rank Organisation who were key players in the early days of the film festival and would sent their stars and representatives to the festival – some of whom can be seen in the archive. Glover, standing next to a young woman identified as Yvonne O’Reilly, is looking towards Sally Thomsett in this picture. Thomsett, born in 1950, is an actor best known for her role as one of the children (Phyllis Waterbury) in the 1970 film The Railway Children directed by Lionel Jeffries. Around the time of this photo she had just completed the thriller Straw Dogs (Sam Peckinpah, 1971) starring Dustin Hoffman and the Irish actor Jim Norton. On the far right the fair-haired actor Shane Briant, in a velvet jacket over a white ruffled tuxedo shirt, is turned towards his companion, identified as Nora Prendergast from Cork. Briant is best known for his roles in Hammer Film Productions and worked with Virginia Wetherell, who also came to the festival in 1972, in the British horror film Demons of the Mind (1972) directed by Peter Sykes. He directed two horror feature films during the 1970s: They Have Changed Their Face (1971) and Baba Yaga (1973). The American actor Carroll Baker, who was in Cork in the same year as Farina, played the part of ‘Baba Yaga’ – a middle-aged seductress who ultimately controls the main character Valentina, played by Isabelle De Funès, through a doll that she gives her. Baba Yaga was based on the graphic stories written by the Italian Guido Crepax who is famous for his ‘Valentina’ series of books. Crepax is also a keen wargamer and is the author of the first wargames to be published in Italy. Jane Asher, on the left of the photo, is an English actor, writer and businesswoman with a particular interest in baking. She has worked in film, theatre, radio and television since she was a young child. Her filmography includes the under-rated Deep End (Jerzy Skolimowksi, 1970) (with music by Cat Stevens), Alfie (Lewis Gilbert, 1966) with Michael Caine, and the British sitcom The Old Guys. At the time of this picture, marked 1972, Asher starred in Henry VIII and His Six Wives (Waris Huessein, 1972) where she played the part of Jane Seymour. Asher is a shareholder in the magazine Private Eye and has written many books including best-selling novels and lifestyle books. Born in Dublin she is the daughter of the actor Maureen Cusack and the actor Cyril Cusack. A bespectacled Carroll and Ann Michelle both smile at the camera while Vicki Michelle looks up at Carroll laughing. Noel Carroll (1941-1998) was an Irish middle-distance runner who set European and World Records in the 1960s and competed for Ireland in the Tokyo Olympic Games. He was one of the founders of the Dublin Marathon in 1980 and, since his untimely death in 1998, the winner of the Marathon receives the Noel Carroll Memorial Trophy. Carroll was married to the international harpist Deirdre O'Callaghan who also came to the film festival. The Michelle sisters are both English actors born in Essex. Vicki Michelle (1950-) is best known for her work on the BBC television series ‘Allo ‘Allo. She has an extensive television and stage career appearing on Celebrity Masterchef (2008), Emmerdale (2007-2009), I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! (2014). She has also appeared on the Irish sketch show The Mario Rosenstock Show (2012). Vicki Michelle played alongside her sister Ann Michelle (1952-) in The Virgin Witch (Ray Austin, 1971) which was rejected by the British Board of Film Censors before being passed with an X rating. The cut version was released in 1972 around the time of this photograph. Ann Michelle also had a small part in the British horror-cult film Psychomania (aka The Death Wheelers) (Don Sharp, 1973) starring George Sanders and Beryl Reid. Sanders (1906-1972) was an English actor with an extensive film career including All About Eve (Joseph L Mankiewicz, 1950) starring Bette Davis, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. However his personal life was fraught and in 1972, soon after completing Psychomania, he committed suicide stating in a suicide note that he was bored. In this picture Green is conducting his composition St Patrick’s Mass, which was televised live from the Franciscan Church in Cork for the opening of the 1971 Cork Film Festival. He is shown in profile, leaning over the music lectern, arms slightly raised as he concentrates on reading the score, whilst conducting under the bright glare of a stage light. Philip Green was born in East London in 1911 and had an extensive career in film-music composition. He was appointed the musical director for the Rank Organisation (who had strong links with the festival in its earlier years) and composed hundreds of film scores and themes for popular television programmes during his career. His stock music production work even features on The Ren and Stimpy Show and SpongeBob SquarePants. However his conversion to Catholicism, in the early 1970s, contributed to his creation of the St Patrick's Mass, which he composed, produced, and recorded in 1970, before bringing it to Cork in 1971. Green died in 1982 but his recording of St Patrick’s Mass, performed by Canon Sydney MacEwan and Trinity Chorale, is still available and can be streamed on-line. The rear of the photo identifies the delegate as ‘Turget, Billus-Turkish Film’. To the right of the shot, we recognise Robin O’Sullivan turned towards his companions. The 1970 festival programme notes that the short Turkish film Separate Worlds (Ayri Dünyalar) was shown that year. This might be an image of the director and producer Turgut N. Demirag. Demirag (1921-1987) was a Turkish film producer, director and screenwriter active between 1947-1973. His film Love and Grudge (1964) was entered into the Moscow International Film Festival in 1964. Title A name given to the resource Drive-in movie theatre Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Drive-in Description An account of the resource This is a colour publicity photo from the Irish Examiner for the 51st Cork Film Festival in 2006. It shows an outdoor drive-in movie theatre with a large outdoor screen and a parking area full of cars facing the screen. The screen shows the actor Anthony Hopkins in a scene from the 1991 blockbuster movie The Silence of the Lambs directed by Johnathan Demme. The glow of the screen lights up the parking lot, while in the back-ground the city lights twinkle in the dark. Drive-in movie theatres have been around since the 1920s with the first one being patented in America in the 1930s. With the rise of car ownership in the 1940s and 1950s, drive-in theatres became popular ways for families to watch movies, especially in rural areas. They were also great places for young couples to meet and date, as we saw in the movie Grease (Randal Kleiser, 1978). With the advent of home entertainment and real estate costs, drive-in attendance declined from the 1970s through to the late 1990s. However, their retro-nostalgic appeal created a mini-boom in America which ebbs and flows, dictated by economics (car use, price of oil), access to cinema via online streaming, or coronavirus pandemic.  Ireland’s first drive-in cinema, Movie Junction, was based at Carrigtwohill in Cork for almost ten years, until its closure in 2019. However, with the advent of the coronavirus pandemic, drive-in cinemas are making a come-back as patrons can enjoy a movie while maintaining social distancing. In 2020, Iran had its first post-revolution drive-in film, showing Exodus by the Iranian filmmaker Ebrahim Hatamikia. Hatamikia’s drama movie was due to be released in theatres around Iran in March 2020 but, due to the pandemic, it went directly to online screening before hitting the big outdoor screen under the iconic Milad tower in the capital Tehran. And, much like drive-in cinemas have always done, patrons sat in their cars, albeit having been sprayed with disinfectant in this case, and listened to the movie via their FM car radio. Nameplates and small flags representing various countries decorate the table around which attendees are seated. There are no identifying marks at the back but we recognise the festival director Dermot Breen seated on the Lord Mayor’s left. The Lord Mayor is standing in front of the festival logo as he makes a speech to the assembled guests. The photo frame was marked 1970 which suggests that this is the Fine Gael politician Peter Barry who served as Lord Mayor of Cork that year. She is resting her chin on her gloved hands as she smiles for the camera. The photo is signed in blue pen with a dedication to the former festival director Dermot Breen: To Dermot, with warm regards from June Thorburn. Born in Karachi, British India, Thorburn was a popular English actor whose work included The Pickwick Papers (Noel Langley, 1952), Orders are Orders (David Paltenghi, 1954) and Touch and Go (Michael Truman, 1956). She attended a garden party given by President John F Kennedy and Ireland’s president, de Valera, during Kennedy’s visit to Ireland in July 1963. Thorburn died in an air crash, age 36, in 1967. The panel is part of a 1970 symposium for the Cork Film Festival. The five panellists are sitting in a semi-circle on the stage in front of long-armed microphones, and include an unidentified priest on the far right sitting next to Long. Jugs of water and ashtrays are placed on the wooden tables in front of them and they all appear to be listening attentively to a speaker off-camera. Bunny Carr is sitting on the far left, hands folded at his chin, looking to his left across the stage. Born in Dublin, Bernard ‘Bunny’ Carr (1927-2018) was a popular RTÉ television presenter during the 1960s and 1970s. He also founded Carr Communications which is said to have trained six of Ireland’s Taoisigh (prime ministers). However it is as a television host of popular television shows that he is fondly remembered including, Teen Talk, The Politicians, Going Strong, and most famously the quizmaster of Quicksilver, where he was accompanied by the musical cues of organist Norman Metcalfe, which made its debut in 1965. (‘Bunny the man who stopped the lights – then showed politicians how to deal with life in spotlight’, Irish Times, 21.09.2018.)  Wolf Mankowitz (1924-1998), sitting on the right in this picture wearing a white shirt, with a cigarette in hand, was an award-winning English screenwriter and author known for his novels, plays and screenplays. He was of Jewish descent, born in the East End of London. However, following altercations with the English revenue, he moved to Ireland to avail of Charles Haughey’s generous tax policy towards artists and settled in Cork in 1971. Mankowitz was a successful screenwriter in the 1950s and wrote screenplays for his own works and adapted others including A Kid for Two Farthings (Carol Reed, 1953) and The Millionairess (Anthony Asquith, 1960) starring Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers. He was one of the screenwriters on the first James Bond film Dr No (Terence Young, 1962) but asked for his name to be removed from the credits as he thought it poor; he also collaborated on the Bond movie Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 1976). In 1972 Mankowitz wrote and directed The Hebrew Lesson, starring Milo O’Shea, Patrick Dawson and Harry Towb (who also appears in this archive). Set in Cork in 1921, during the War of Independence, it is about the friendship between an IRA man escaping pursuit from the Black and Tans, and an elderly man at a synagogue. He wrote the screenplay having being told the story about an IRA man hiding in a small synagogue in Dublin’s Lennox Street and it was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1972. Interestingly the Guardian newspaper reported that the British M15 kept a security file on Mankowitz for more than a decade suspecting that he was a possible communist agent following his marriage to Ann Seligmann, in 1944, as she was a communist party member. The investigation was dropped when the M15 informant insisted that Mankowitz’s leftwing sympathies had disappeared noting that “He comes to the college every morning with a copy of the Times.” (Alan Travis, The Guardian, 26.08.2010.)
