The group of four suited men are mid-conversation; Lynch is glancing towards Breen who is looking directly at the lens of the camera. Jack Lynch (1917-1999) was born in Shandon, Cork, and went to school in the North Mon. By all accounts Lynch was a great sportsman and would credit sport with teaching him how to be part of a team and how to cope with victory and defeat. Lynch worked as parliamentary secretary for Eamon de Valera and succeeded Sean Lemass in 1966. He helped Ireland to usher in full membership of the European Economic Community whose application had been on the EEC table since 1961. Lynch was the Leader of Fianna Fáil from 1966 to 1979 and the Leader of the Opposition from 1973 to 1977. He would serve Ireland as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. In Cork, we have named a tunnel that runs under the River Lee after Jack Lynch. The Jack Lynch Tunnel opened in 1999 and eases traffic congestion in the City by diverting traffic under the River, via an immersed tube tunnel, connecting motorways North, West, and East. They are both wearing dark suits with a bow-tie, and Preminger is shown, on the left, in profile accepting the award from Lynch who is smiling at him. Jack Lynch would go on to serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. At the time of this picture (marked as 1957) he served as Minister for Education and Minister for Gaeltacht Affairs. He is also played Gaelic sports for Cork and is regarded as one of the greatest dual players of all-time. Otto Preminger (1905-1986) was born in Austria-Hungary but fled to Austria with his family after the breakout of the first World War. He went on to work for Fox Studios in Los Angeles and was known for defying the censorship code of Hollywood with his controversial films. He directed more than 35 feature films including the Oscar-nominated The Moon is Blue (1953) with the English actor Dawn Addams who was a frequent visitor to the Cork Film Festival during the 1950s. In this picture, Preminger is being presented with a silver-plated single-column trophy engraved with the Cork coat of arms on the front. While we cannot see the detail in this picture, we know from <a href="https://corkfilmfest.ucc.ie/items/show/206">another image</a> in the archive that the award is topped with a film reel and that a film ribbon motif is replicated at various levels of the column. Dan Donovan (1926-2008) was a founding member of Cork’s Everyman Theatre and Cork’s cultural legacy owes much to his passion and love of the arts. He was a board director of the Cork Choral Festival as well as the Cork Film Festival. It is possible that this picture was taken in the 1970s when the celebrated Jamaican playwright and film director Trevor Rhone came to Cork with his Jamaican colleagues. By then Rhone had released his successful film, co-written with Perry Henzell, The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, 1972). His later film, Smile Orange (Rhone, 1975), went on the win a gold medal at the Cork Film Festival in 1975. Around the time of this picture, Mason was making the war film The Blue Max (John Guillermin, 1966) which was shot at Ardmore Studios and filmed in various locations around Ireland. The film was about a German fighter pilot on the Western Front during World War I. Some of the scenes were shot at the Carrickabrack Viaduct in Fermoy, Co. Wearing evening suits accessorised with a festival ribbon they smile as they approach the entrance of the cinema - their faces lit by the flash of the press camera. A large crowd, held back by two uniformed guards, jostle for a glimpse of the stars. James Mason (1909-1984) was an English actor who found success in England and Hollywood from the 1950s through to the 1980s starring in more than 100 films. Around the time of this picture, Mason was making the war film The Blue Max (John Guillermin, 1966) which was shot at Ardmore Studios and filmed in various locations around Ireland.  Some of the aerial warfare scenes were shot at the Carrickabrack Viaduct in Fermoy, Co. Cork where James Mason, as General von Klugermann, flew several times under the spectacular railway bridge which spans the River Blackwater. Both men are wearing dinner jackets accessorised with a bow-tie and a pin on the left lapel. The light of the camera illuminates Mason, with his grey-flecked hair, and bounces off his cheek bones. His shorter colleague, with dark hair and horn-rimmed glasses, looks on towards the companion to whom they are speaking. James Mason (1909-1984) appears a couple of times in the archive. Born in England he found success in both England and Hollywood from the 1950s through to the 1980s starring in more than 100 films. He was nominated for three Academy Awards for A Star is Born (George Cukor, 1954) with Judy Garland, Lolita (Stanley Kubrick, 1962) and the Silvio Narizzano award-winning film Georgy Girl (1966) with Lynn Redgrave and Charlotte Rampling. Mason was one of the early players in the Hollywood studio production system and negotiated strongly for contractual rights allowing him economic and creative freedom. Interestingly he registered as a conscientious objector during the Second World War. They are both standing in front of a promotional poster for the Harp Lager-sponsored Cork Film Festival and smiling at the camera. Asher has become well known in recent years for her writing, business and charity work. However she had a prodigious career in film, theatre, radio and television since she was a young child. Her television work in England is extensive and includes Brideshead Revisited, Miss Marple, New Tricks, and A Voyage Round My Father with Laurence Olivier. Her filmography includes Deep End (Jerzy Skolimowksi, 1970) (with music by Cat Stevens), Alfie (Lewis Gilbert, 1966) with Michael Caine, and the British sitcom The Old Guys. At the time of this picture, marked 1972, Asher starred in Henry VIII and His Six Wives (Waris Huessein, 1972) where she played the part of Jane Seymour. The personal life of Asher was of great interest to the British media when she was engaged to the Beatle Paul McCartney, whom she met when she was 17. However she broke off her engagement some years later, age 22, after finding him in bed with someone else. She later married the satirical cartoonist Gerald Scarfe in 1981. As well as being a shareholder in the satirical magazine, Private Eye, Asher has written many books including best-selling novels and lifestyle books with a particular interest in baking. Her range of kitchenware is sold in Poundland in the UK and in Dealz in Ireland.
