The back of the photo identifies the actor and filmmaker John Boorman, the former film censor Sheamus Smith, the artist Frank Sanquest and William (Bill) Harpur from RTÉ. Smith, in a light-coloured suit wearing his distinctive glasses, sits at the far left hands clasped in front of him. The filmmaker John Boorman sits beside him. Boorman, wearing a favoured cheque jacket with an open-neck shirt, is glancing down at the table in front of him which is scattered with papers and some drinking glasses. The Cork-born artist Frank Sanquest, in light coloured jacket, sits between Boorman and Harpur. Sanquest worked as the Arts Editor for the Cork Examiner from 1940-1987 and was a familiar presence at the festival. The photo is marked ‘1970s’ but we might suggest it is 1974 since Boorman came to Cork that year for the 19th film festival. He continues to show his films at the festival and his feature Queen and Country had its Irish première in 2014, at the 59th edition of the Cork festival. We recognise the filmmaker John Boorman standing at the far left in a cheque jacket. He stands alongside the Irish director Norman Cohen, in a dark jacket and short beard. Cohen was a familiar presence at the festival in the seventies, along with Lynda Bellingham and Linda Hayden who starred in his risqué comedies including Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Cohen, 1977) and Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers (Cohen, 1977). The 1974 film festival programme notes that Boorman and Cohen were both members of the International Jury for the Feature Films Competition that year which helps us date this photo. Sheamus Smith, wearing his distinctive glasses, stands on the far right of the photo. Smith was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). He published his memoir Off Screen (Gill and MacMillan) in 2007. The Martini Terrace, built in 1959, is an iconic landmark that sits on the top floor of the 18-storey New Zealand House. Koval was a journalist and respected film critic who had a positive impact on the public representation of the Cork Film Festival during the 1960s. Blond-haired Geeson, wearing a white lace evening dress and holding a bouquet of flowers, looks at the camera as she leaves the Savoy Cinema flanked by O'Sullivan and another festival attendee. Robin O’Sullivan, on the left, was a committed member of the Cork Film Festival team and would run it for a few years in the early eighties after the sudden death of the then-festival director, Dermot Breen, in 1978. Judy Geeson (1948-) was a popular film, television, and stage actor whose role playing the young student, Pamela Dare, in To Sir, With Love (James Clavell, 1967) opposite Sidney Poitier secured her place in film history. This image is dated 1969-1970, when Geeson would have been around 22 years old. Her filmography includes 10 Rillington Place (Richard Fleischer, 1971) with Richard Attenborough, Dominique (Michael Anderson, 1978) with Jenny Agutter, and a supporting role in The Eagle Has Landed (John Sturges, 1976) alongside Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland and Jenny Agutter. Around the time of this picture in 1970, Geeson had just completed the little-seen One of Those Things (Hændlight uheld) (Erik Balling, 1971) starring Roy Dotrice, which was a Danish film made with a British and Japanese cast in English. She was married to Sean Kenny, the extraordinary Irish theatre designer, in 1969 until his sudden death in 1973, age 43. Some of Kenny's set designs can be seen in the theatre and performance collection of the Victoria & Albert (V&A) online digital archive.
