A young Legendre, in a herringbone tweed jacket, is shown in profile listening to a Marcus on the right. Both are wearing festival pins on their jackets and if we zoom into those pins we can see that the pin on Legendre’s jacket is marked ‘delegate’ and the pin on Marcus’ jacket is marked ‘Jury’. The room behind them is crowded and, with Marcus holding a drink in his hand, we might guess that this is a reception held for the delegates of the film festival. There is no information to corroborate the identity of Legendre but we appreciate the presence of local man turned film director, Louis Marcus, at the festival. Marcus was born in Cork City to an Irish Jewish family. He attended University College Cork before beginning his career in Dublin as assistant director on Mise Éire (George Morrison, 1959) and Saoirse? (George Morrison, 1961). Marcus would continue to work on Gael-Linn documentaries until 1973. His first documentary <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art</a> (1958) on his friend the Cork-born sculptor, Seamus Murphy (1907-1975), is of particular interest to us as Murphy designed the bronze St Finbarr statuette that was presented to prize-winners at the Cork Film Festival for some years. Title A name given to the resource Peter O'Toole with Dermot Breen and Leslie Mallory Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Peter O'Toole, Dermot Breen, Leslie Mallory Description An account of the resource This is a sepia-toned photograph, dated 1963, of the actor Peter O’Toole walking with the festival director Dermot Breen and the journalist Leslie Mallory. All three are shown smiling whilst in conversation. A dapper-looking O’Toole, in glasses on the far right of the photo, is looking towards Breen and Mallory with a broad grin. Mallory on the far left, in sunglasses and hand in pocket, walks alongside Breen who is smiling as he steps forward. We might guess that Mallory and Breen are meeting O’Toole on the tarmacadam of Cork Airport which had recently opened in 1961. Leslie Mallory was an RTÉ news reporter who died in 2006, age 81. He worked in RTÉ radio and television news for most of his career. He also dabbled in film production and wrote a script of a feature film at the behest of Peter Sellers. He moved back to Ireland from London in the 1970s and was a senior foreign editor by the time of his retirement. By all accounts he was a beloved colleague. (Dermot Mullane, Sunday Independent, 26.03.2006.) Peter O’Toole (1932-2013) was a British actor of Irish descent. He was either born in Connemara, Co. Galway or Leeds in England depending on his telling. A stage and film actor of Irish descent he was a Shakespearean actor with the Bristol Old Vic with whom he played many parts including Hamlet (1958, 1963) and Waiting for Godot (1958), which he reprised at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1969. His love for the theatre was such that he would turn down film roles stating that “You’ve got to go to Stratford when you get the chance.” (Stephen Watts, New York Times, 05.02.1961.) O'Toole achieved international recognition for his part as TE Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean, 1962) which was released a year before this photo was taken. He holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations for acting without receiving a win including aforementioned Lawrence of Arabia, The Lion In Winter (Anthony Harvey, 1968), Mr Chips (Herbert Ross, 1969), and the British comedy-drama Venus (Roger Mitchell, 2002) written by Hanif Kureishi. He did however receive an honorary Academy Award in 2003 which might have assuaged his missing out on earlier nominations. O'Toole died in London, age 81, and his ashes taken to the West of Ireland. He was a friend of the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, who spent time with him in Galway over the years, and who speaks fondly of him: “He was unsurpassed for the grace he brought to every performance on and off the stage.” (www.thejournal.ie, 15.12.2013.) Marked 1962 the photo identifies four of the revellers to be the actor Ronnie Shiner, the local businessman Donal Crosbie, Norma Crosbie and Edmond Purdom, an English actor, voice artist, and director. The room is packed with a well-dressed crowd in the midst of a sing-song and includes, at the back of the room by the wooden door, three uniformed Gardaí. At the centre of the photo, we can make out the distinctive profile of the British actor Ronald Shiner with his arms raised. Known as ‘Ronnie’, Shiner (1903-1966) was a British stand-up comedian and comedy actor who worked on stage, television and film. A career highlight included the stage version of Worm’s Eye View (1945 to 1947) followed by a film version in 1952 with Diana Dors. In 1962, around the time this photo was taken, he had made a TV version of Worm’s Eye View for the BBC. Shiner was the subject of This is Your Life in 1958 when he was surprised by Eamon Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre. Based on photographs in Roy Hammond's own book, Media Memories of Cork (1994), we have reason to that one of the obscured figures is that of Mexican actress Linda Christian. Purdom and Christian were married to each other for the short period of 1962-1963 and so they would have been a couple at the time of this visit to Cork. The party is taking place in the MacCurtain Street Garda Station which was located at 58 MacCurtain Street. It was originally a house built c.1830 before its use as a Garda station and constabulary barracks. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage describes it as a terraced three-bay four-storey former house, over basement, as a pair with the adjoining former house to the west. A flight of limestone steps, framed by cast-iron railings, lead to a round-headed door opening. The station was closed in 2013, as part of a programme of Garda station closures around Ireland. We have no information on Coomber but recognise Towb as the popular actor from Northern Ireland who was familiar on screen as well as stage. He began his acting career travelling with theatrical groups on both sides of the border and following a move to London in the early 1950s his presence on the British stage was cemented, in particular with his work at the National Theatre. The film critic Eric Shorter wrote of him: “Towb was one of the gentlest, most imaginative and thoughtful actors of his generation… He was always on the stage if he could afford it – taking television and film work to balance out his income.” (The Guardian, 30.07.2009.) The press corps is seated in front of the main desk where the film festival director, Dermot Breen, sits at the microphone taking questions from them. An audience is gathered around at the back of the room listening to the proceedings and some are taking notes. The photo is dated ‘guess 1960s’ but we can see a poster for the 1977 American mystery film The Late Show (Robert Benton, 1977) taped to the wall of the press room next to a chalk-marked blackboard. This allows us to date the press conference to 1977 (or later). The Late Show was directed by Robert Benton and produced by the award-winning Robert Altman and starred Art Carney and Lily Tomlin whose names feature on the poster. Title A name given to the resource Wolf Mankowitz at the Savoy Cinema, Cork Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Wolf Mankowitz, Savoy Cinema, James Bond Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the English screenwriter Wolf Mankowtiz and companions at the Savoy Cinema in Cork. The imposing figure of Mankowitz, dressed in all black, stands on the right of the photo, slightly turned to his left whilst in conversation with another man. To the left of the photo are two unidentified companions, a younger man with curly dark hair, wearing a velvet jacket accessorised with a scarf at his neck, and in front of him we can just make out the features of a young lady with similar dark curly hair, looking down with a smile on her lips. Mankowitz (1924-1998) was an award-winning English screenwriter and author known for his novels, plays, and screenplays. Mankowitz was of Jewish descent, born in the East End of London. However, following altercations with the English revenue, he moved to Ireland to avail of Charles Haughey’s generous tax policy towards artists and settled in Cork in 1971. He was a successful screenwriter in the 1950s and wrote screenplays for his own works and adapted others including A Kid for Two Farthings (Carol Reed, 1953) and The Millionairess (Anthony Asquith, 1960) starring Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers. He was one of the screenwriters on the first James Bond film Dr No (Terence Young, 1962) but asked for his name to be removed from the credits as he thought it poor; he also collaborated on the Bond movie Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 1976). In 1972 Mankowitz wrote and directed The Hebrew Lesson starring Milo O’Shea, Patrick Dawson, and Harry Towb (who can also be found in this archive). The film is set in Cork in 1921 during the War of Independence and is about the friendship between an IRA man, escaping pursuit from the Black and Tans, and an elderly man at a synagogue. Mankowitz wrote the screenplay having being told the story about an IRA man hiding in a small synagogue in Dublin’s Lennox Street (TCD Irish Film and TV Research Online: tcd.ie/irishfilm).  It was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1972 and, despite the photo being marked 1960s, might suggest that the photo was taken around then. Interestingly the Guardian reported that the British M15 kept a security file on Mankowitz for more than a decade suspecting that he was a possible communist agent following his marriage to Ann Seligmann, in 1944, as she was a communist party member. The investigation was dropped when the M15 informant insisted that Mankowitz’s leftwing sympathies had disappeared noting that “He comes to the college every morning with a copy of the Times.” (Alan Travis, The Guardian, 26.08.2010.) The interview is taking place on one of the tree-lined avenues that dot the park amidst its landscaped gardens. Breen is shown talking to the interviewer, hands in pockets with a cravat tied at his neck; the brass buttons on his jacket glint in the sunlight. We see the three-man television crew from behind and note the belted-jacket on one of the crew suggesting that the photo was taken in the late 1960s or early 1970s.  The park itself is one of Cork’s finest spaces. It originated with the 1902-03 Cork International Exhibition which took place on 8 hectares of reclaimed marshlands along the Mardyke area of Cork City. Organised by the then Lord Mayor of Cork, Edward Fitzgerald, the exhibition was visited by Edward VII and Queen Alexandra and no expense was spared constructing elaborate exhibits including a switchback railway, a water chute, and a pavilion for the park. A decision was made to donate the grounds to Cork Corporation after the exhibition and the new public space was named after Edward Fitzgerald. The legacy of the exhibition can still be seen in the park today in the shape of the President’s and Lord Mayor’s Pavilion (1902) at the entrance to the Park. It was probably designed by the architect Arthur Hill, who also designed the Metropole Hotel. Interestingly Hadji Bey launched their Turkish Delight at the Exhibition and had a shop front at the Metropole Hotel so we might guess that Arthur Hill had a hand in that collaboration too. The Shrubberies House, now Cork Municipal Museum, was used as municipal offices by the Cork Corporation as headquarters to co-ordinate the rebuilding of the City Hall after it was burnt down during the Burning of Cork, by the British Auxiliaries, in December 1920. Under the aegis of Aloys Fleischmann the park set up a Cork Sculpture Park Committee in the mid-1960s, and thanks to that we can see many examples of work by the sculptor Séamus Murphy, including Dreamline and Michael Collins, as well as work from other artists including Marshall Huston and Joseph Higgins. Title A name given to the resource Dermot Breen on stage Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Dermot Breen, Gus Healy, Ciaran Carty, Censor Description An account of the resource This is an atmospheric black and white photo of the festival director Dermot Breen speaking to a seated audience. We only see his back but recognise him from his distinctive side profile. A single spotlight throws its glare down towards the stage and flecks of dust can be made out in the light of the camera. Guests are seated behind Breen along the width of the large stage. We can make out the low profile of the Fianna Fail politician, and sometimes Lord Mayor of Cork, Gus Healy sitting at its centre. Dermot Breen (1924-1978) was the founder of the film festival when he proposed it under the umbrella of the Cork Tóstal Council where he was secretary. Under his auspices, the Cork Film Festival opened at the Savoy Cinema in 1956 with a showing of A Town Like Alice (Jack Lee, 1956) – itself a controversial film at the time because of being withdrawn from Cannes lest it give offence to Japan due to the nature of its World War II content. Breen was born in Waterford and educated in Cork at the Presentation Brothers College on the Mardyke. He was primarily a salesman until he became the manager (1956-1964) of the Palace Cinema in Cork. His greatest achievement however was the establishment of the Cork International Film Festival in 1956 which he ran until his untimely death in 1978. It was one of the first film festivals to earn the recognition of the International Federation of Film Producers Association in Washington in 1959 allowing it to become an annual event. Breen travelled the world attending festivals receiving honours from the 1964 Berlin Film Festival in recognition of his filmic work. He was a keen advocate of short and documentary films whose legacy can be still seen today in the Cork Film Festival ethos. Interestingly Breen also worked as the State film censor from 1972 following a stint on the film censorship board from 1970. The film commentator, Ciaran Carty, saw the appointment of Breen as a time of liberalisation for film in Ireland. Carty notes that Breen seemingly tried to appease the Catholic right with a reactionary stance whilst his actual decision-making contained fewer cuts than any other censor before. (Carty, Confessions of a Sewer Rat: A Personal History of Censorship and the Irish Cinema, New Island Books, 1995, 101.) On his death Breen was replaced by Frank Hall, of Hall’s Pictorial Weekly, who would serve as Irish film censor for the coming decade. The back of the photograph identifies two of the participants as Donal Wilde, sitting at the table, and the photographer Padraig Kennelly. There is little information on Donal Wilde but we know he was a cameraman who possibly worked on the film Patriots for a Man: Blue Shirts and their Times (RTÉ, Nick Coffey, 2000), a film on the history of Irish far-right organisations in the 1930s. A bearded Pádraig Kennelly, wearing a light-coloured jacket and dark trousers, is standing on the right, hands resting on the table and leaning down while he follows the demonstration on the table before him. Kennelly was an Irish journalist, cameraman and photographer, who co-founded and edited Kerry’s Eye newspaper. He is best known for pursuing photojournalism with his wife, the photojournalist Joan Kennelly, who died in 2007. The Kennelly's were a formidable team, achieving international recognition with their work documenting the 1969 visit of Charles de Gaulle to Ireland. De Gaulle had just resigned as President of France and his exile to Ireland caused consternation and avid interest back home so, armed with local knowledge and a long-lens camera, the Kennelly’s tracked the de Gaulle entourage around Kerry taking a number of pictures one of which made the cover of Paris Match. Frank McNally notes in his article on 'Capturing a General' that, for many years after. the Kennelly’s would raise a toast to the de Gaulles’ visit: “Up Kerry and vive la France!” (Irish Times, 29.05.2013).
