George Baker, in a striped shirt and tie, stands on the right next to Dan Donovan on the far right. While this photo is dated 1970s we might suggest it is 1972 from the glimpse of the festival brochure in Dan Donovan’s pocket. Donovan (1926-2008) was a founding member of Cork’s Everyman Theatre and Cork’s cultural legacy owes much to his passion and love of the arts. He was a board director of the Cork Choral Festival as well as the Cork Film Festival. His colleague on the left of this photo, Robin O’Sullivan, was also a stalwart film festival committee member who went on to become its director in the late seventies following the unexpected death of festival founder Dermot Breen. He ran it during a difficult time for the festival before handing over the reins to Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan in 1985. The English actor and writer George Baker (1931-2011) was a star of cinema, stage, and television. He famously had an affair with the French actor Brigitte Bardot whilst married to the first of his three wives. However he is remembered by most for his role as Inspector Wexford in the successful Ruth Rendall crime drama television series The Ruth Rendell Mysteries (1987-2000). Baker has extensive television and film credits including The Dam Busters (Michael Anderson, 1955), Goodbye, Mr Chips (Herbert Ross, 1969) starring Peter O’Toole and Petula Clark, and The Spy Who Loved Me (Lewis Gilbert, 1977) with Roger Moore. Around the time of this photo he had completed The Executioner (Sam Wanamaker, 1970) starring Judy Geeson who also came to the Cork festival in the seventies. Baker briefly ran a successful regional theatre company during the late sixties and early seventies bringing his tour of Terence Rattigan’s The Sleeping Prince (1968) and Christopher Fry’s The Lady’s Not for Burning (1971) to the West End. Dublin-born Eamon Morrissey (1943-) is a stage and television actor. He left school early and went to London where he acted in Brian Friel’s Philadelphia, Here I Come! in the 1964 world première. Morrissey is known for his comic roles and won an Irish television Jacob’s Award in 1977 for his performances in Frank Hall’s long-running satirical TV series, Hall’s Pictorial Weekly starring Frank Duggan and Michael Twomey. Twomey also came to the Cork Film Festival on a number of occasions in the seventies. Morrissey has appeared in Father Ted and the RTÉ soap opera Fair City. His work in Fair City was recognised by the annual Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTA) who nominated him for Best Supporting Actor in 2011. The photographs, by the photographer Donal Sheehan, include the festival director Dermot Breen holding forth alongside the journalist and artist Frank Sanquest, Dick Beamish, and journalist Larry Lyons. They are sitting around a table which is scattered with the detritus of the day including papers, ashtrays, and a black Ericsson Dialog-style telephone. Frank Sanquest, sitting on the far left of the photo, wearing a striped shirt with a dickie-bow, was a Cork-born artist who specialised in portraiture and landscapes. He studied art at the Cork Crawford School of Art and London’s Central School of Art and the College of Printing before returning to Cork. He was a past president of the Munster Fine Art Society and for many years was resident set designer for the Cork Opera House. He was an excellent scene painter and his work at the Cork Opera House included the set for Oklahoma in the 1950s when Dan Donovan was directing for the Cork Operatic Society. Sanquest was on the board of the Southern Theatre Group with Dan Donovan and James Healy which toured with John B Keane plays often with the Cork actor Michael Twomey. They had great success with Sive in 1959. From 1940 to 1987 Sanquest also worked as the Arts Editor for The Cork Examiner, in whose capacity he might have been attending the Film Festival press briefings. He died in 2008, age 95. The journalist Larry Lyons, sitting behind Dick Beamish by the wall, also worked for The Cork Examiner in the 1970s; his journalism covered the fraught days of the troubles in the early 1970s as well as film reviews. Elsner’s long-standing career ended only with her death in 2019, age 77. In the early 1970s Elsner appeared in The Stuff That Dreams are Made Of (Alfred Vohrer, 1972) and the German drama film Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with the German actor Ferdy Mayne, who also came to the Cork Film Festival in 1972. Elsner is best remembered in Germany for playing the title role of Inspector Lea Sommer, in a long-running German TV series Die Kommissarin (The Inspector) which ran from 1994 to 2006. She also played the lead role in the highly acclaimed black-and-white film Die Unberührbare (No Place to Go) (Oskar Roehler, 2000) based on the life of novelist Gisela Elstner, the mother of the director. The film went to the Cannes Film Festival and won Elsner the Deutscher Filmpreis (German Film Award) for Best Actress. In his review, The New York Times critic, A.O. Title A name given to the resource Robert Shaw and Vida Breen at the Capitol Cinema Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Vida Breen, Robert Shaw, Richard Lester, Capitol Cinema Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the actor Robert Shaw and Vida Breen at the entrance of the Capitol Cinema in Cork. Robert Shaw, in a dress suit, looks up towards the camera smiling, his hand linked through Vida Breen’s arm. She is dressed in a flouncy white top over a long chevron-patterned skirt, and smiles as she steps forward towards the cinema. Behind her, we can just make out her husband, the festival director Dermot Breen with Robin O’Sullivan. A small crowd gathers around them accompanied by a photographer and a guard. Beyond them the traffic turns down towards Washington Street onto the Western Road. The Capitol Cinema was located at the junction of the Grand Parade and Washington Street. It opened in 1947 with the Bob Hope and Joan Caulfield comedy Monsieur Beaucaire (George Marshall, 1946). The cinema originally held over 1,300 patrons and at the time had one of the best operating systems in the country including a new magnetic sound system pioneered by 20th Century Fox. The sound from the speakers was so realistic that children ran out of the cinema crying when thunder broke out in the first showing of a film. It originally held a restaurant which was converted into a second screen in 1974, with seats for 105 patrons. Before long in 1989 it was converted into the city’s first multiplex with six screens. The new Capitol Cineplex was a popular cinema bringing movie blockbusters to the people of Cork until its closure in 2005 and conversion into a shopping and office block in 2017. The last film shown at the Cineplex was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Mike Newell, 2005) and The Constant Gardener (Fernando Meirelles, 2005). (John McSweeney, The Golden Age of Cork Cinemas, Rose Arch Publications, 2013.)  Robert Shaw (1927-1978) was an English actor, novelist and playwright. In 1961 he won the Hawthornden Prize, a British literary award established by the English philanthropist, Alice Warrender, for his second novel, The Sun Doctor. He had a successful television and stage career with productions on Stratford and Broadway including Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker (1961) with Donald Pleasance and Alan Bates which was reprised in the 1963 film The Caretaker directed by Clive Donner. His long list of films includes A Man for all Seasons (Fred Zinnemann, 1966) for which he was Oscar-nominated for his role as Henry VIII. Following this he went on to have a successful film career including The Sting (George Roy Hill, 1973) and Jaws (Steven Spielberg, 1975) with Roy Scheider. Robert Shaw had ten children. His son, the actor Ian Shaw, was to portray his father in a West End play, The Shark is Broken (2020), about the beleaguered Jaws shoot directed by Guy Masterson. His grandchild, Ferdia Shaw, starred as the lead role in the Disney adaptation of Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl (2020), directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Judie Dench and Colin Farrell. At the time of this picture, dated 1976, Shaw had just starred in the British-American romance and adventure film Robin and Marian (Richard Lester, 1976) alongside Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn. The director of Robin and Marian, Richard Lester, was also a visitor to the Cork Film Festival in the seventies. Shaw had a home in Tourmakeady, County Mayo, and died close by his home from a heart attack in 1978, just two years after this picture was taken, age 51. De Casembroot was the then-partner of the actor David Hemmings who sits on the far left in the front row. Hayden stands behind Hemmings, wearing a halter-neck dark dress, and smiles at the camera, glass in hand. From the carpet and room décor, we guess that they are seated in the Lord Mayor’s Chambers at the City Hall which was built in 1936. The room is decorated with memorabilia, gifts, and artworks and in this image we can make out part of the carpet that bears the City’s coat of arms. The Lord Mayor, wearing his chain of office, sits at the centre with his wife on his right. Around them, guests pose for the picture and include Professor Piero Calì from UCC, who stands second from left in the back row. Professor Calì (-2008), was originally from Milan before moving to Cork where he was a Professor of Italian at the University. He founded the Cork branch of the Dante Alighieri Society in 1957, with his UCC colleague Ethna Byrne-Costigan (1904-1991). Formed in 1889, the Rome-based Dante Alighieri Society (Società Dante Alighieri) aims to promote an interest in the Italian language and culture with branches in more than 60 countries across the world.
