The uncredited photo was taken in Hollywood, USA, and was found among the archive papers. We note that a tribute programme of Stanely Kramer's work was introduced by Professor Robert Gessner at the Cork festival in 1966. Gessner chose six of Kramer's films for the festival and wrote an article for that year's programme. Kramer (1913-2001) was a renowned Oscar-winning film director and producer. In general, he made films that tried to address social issues such as racism, greed, and war. Kramer has an extensive filmography which includes The Defiant Ones (1958), Inherit the Wind (1960), Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) and the comedy film It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) starring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney. In this picture, Kramer is being presented the award by Katherine Hepburn (1907-2003) who had just finished Kramer’s Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner (1967) with Sidney Poitier and a frail Spencer Tracy, her partner of 26 years who would die soon after the film was made. Kramer also directed the German actor Heinz Rühmann in Ship of Fools (1965) starring Vivien Leigh in her final screen role. Rühmann came to the Cork festival and a couple of undated images of him can be seen in the festival archive. Since 2002 the Producers Guild of America awards the Stanley Kramer Award for films that "illuminate provocative social issues." In 2002 it was awarded to In America (2002) directed by the Irish playwright and director Jim Sheridan. The small group is at a drinks reception on the grounds of Ashbourne House in Glounthaune, Cork, during the 1970s. The photo, which is water-damaged, also includes Dick Beamish, his unidentified colleague, and Jack Mahoney. Liam O’Leary, on the far left of the photo turned towards Cusack, was born in 1910 in Youghal, County Cork. He was many things in life including film historian, filmmaker, author, actor, and founder of the Irish Film Society. And, perhaps most importantly for Ireland, he was an archivist. O’Leary was an acquisitions officer for the National Film Archive in London until 1966 when he returned to Ireland to work as a Film Acceptance Viewer for Radio Telefis Éireann. His love for the cinema was profound and he established the Liam O’Leary Archive to rescue Irish film-related objects, stories, and ephemera. He was the driving force behind the Irish Film Archive and his film collection is preserved there. (Kevin Brownlow, Obituary: Liam O’Leary, Independent, 18.12.1992.) In 1986 the Liam O’Leary Archive was donated to the National Library of Ireland where it is now preserved. As far as we can determine the trophy is engraved Presented by the Commission of the European Communities, and might be presented to the festival as part of the Commission’s support of the festival through their Creative Europe MEDIA programme. Linda Hayden came to Cork on a number of occasions and was a favourite of the photographers, often photographed with fellow actor Lynda Bellingham with whom she starred in the Confessions series of movies. Born in 1953 she was best known for her roles in British horror films and sex comedies such as Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977) and the ‘video-nasty’ Exposé (James Kenelm Clarke, 1976) which was re-released with cuts, as Stalker (Martin Kemp, 1997). Controversially Hayden appeared, age 15, in the 1968 British drama film Baby Love (Alastair Reid) in which she acted the part of a young girl who seduces her adoptive family after her mother commits suicide. She would have been too young to see her own movie which was rated X in British cinemas and abroad. The New York Times noted that Baby Love was: “… meaningful and even moving. Baby Love however is basically a chiller, like the dripping water with the initial credits – a drop, a trickle, and a cold flow.” She followed this foray into horror films with Hammer’s Taste the Blood of Dracula (Peter Sasdy,1970) starring Christopher Lee, and The Blood on Satan’s Claw (Piers Haggard, 1971) before making her name with the Confession comedies so beloved of the seventies. Hayden was the partner of the actor Robin Askwith for some time in the 1970s who also starred in the Confessions sex comedy series. Askwith would be the best man at the wedding of Lynda Bellingham and the film producer Greg Smith’s wedding – both of whom were at the Cork Film Festival in the 1970s. We recognise some of the delegates from the archive including the film director Terry Gilliam and the actor Linda Hayden, together with the film censor Sheamus Smith and Tom Nicholas from London Friends of Cork. Terry Gilliam, standing at the centre, smiling broadly at the camera with his arm around the shoulder of Linda Hayden, is an actor, screen writer, director and former member of the Monty Python comedy team. He has directed 13 feature films including Brazil (1985), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) and most recently The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). At the time of this picture, taken in the 1970s, Gilliam, who started his career as a cartoonist, was the main animator for the award-winnng BBC sketch comedy show Monty Python’s Flying Circus which ran from 1969 to 1974. His penchant for the surreal and fantastical can be seen in his future film work which often feature black comedy with a twist.  Linda Hayden, seen here next to Gilliam wearing a fur-trimmed coat and smiling at the camera, features heavily in the Cork Film Festival archive. Controversially she appeared, age 15, in the 1968 British drama film Baby Love (Alastair Reid) in which she acted the part of a young girl who seduces her adoptive family after her mother commits suicide. Hayden was the partner of the actor Robin Askwith for some time in the 1970s who also starred in the Confessions sex comedy series. Askwith was the best man at the wedding of Lynda Bellingham and the film producer Greg Smith  – both of whom were at the Cork Film Festival in the 1970s. The photo is undated but notes that the event includes the London Friends of Cork including actor David Hemmings, Prudence de Casembroot, and Dick Beamish. The formally dressed group of eight delegates, some with a drink and cigarette in hand, are lined up smiling at the camera. David Hemmings, third from the left, wearing a frill-trimmed shirt, was the partner of Baroness Prudence de Casembroot, who stands second from left in a long white dress. Hemmings (1941-2003) was an English actor and director, who achieved international fame as a sixties icon following his memorable role, as a London fashion photographer, in Blow-Up (1966), by the Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni, and starring Vanessa Redgrave and Sarah Miles. He later played the leading man, opposite Jane Fonda, in Roger Vadim’s fantasy Barbarella (1970). However, his turbulent colourful personal life was also of great interest to the media. Hemmings was married four times and divorced from his second wife, the American actor Gayle Hunnicutt, following an affair with his then-personal assistant Baroness Prudence de Casembroot. The photo has a note marked on the front in blue ink: First Cork International Film Festival, May 1956. Elliman, in a dark suit with his left hand in his pocket, was an Irish impresario who managed many of Ireland's cinema screens during the 1950s. He brought film production to Ireland opening the Ardmore Studios, with Emmet Dalton, in 1958. Elliman was involved with the early planning of the Cork Film Festival, advising and encouraging the festival founder Dermot Breen. The website louiselliman.com notes that he was a regular at the festival during the remaining 11 years of his life and, on its 10th anniversary, his name was included in a select list of international patrons.
