The pews are full and those without seats stand up against the church walls. We notice the Lord Mayor Seán O’Leary kneeling at the outside edge of the front pew, folded hands resting under his chin. Across the aisle the former Lord Mayor of Cork, Gus Healy, kneels next to the festival director Dermot Breen, and his wife Vida who wears a white lace veil. Along the church pew the congregation kneel in prayer, some holding rosary beads. The presence of Lord Mayor Seán O’Leary helps us date this photo to 1972 or 1973. The formally dressed group of eight delegates, some with a drink and cigarette in hand, are lined up smiling at the camera. David Hemmings, third from the left, wearing a frill-trimmed shirt, was the partner of Baroness Prudence de Casembroot, who stands second from left in a long white dress. Hemmings (1941-2003) was an English actor and director, who achieved international fame as a sixties icon following his memorable role, as a London fashion photographer, in Blow-Up (1966), by the Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni, and starring Vanessa Redgrave and Sarah Miles. He later played the leading man, opposite Jane Fonda, in Roger Vadim’s fantasy Barbarella (1970). However, his turbulent colourful personal life was also of great interest to the media. Hemmings was married four times and divorced from his second wife, the American actor Gayle Hunnicutt, following an affair with his then-personal assistant Baroness Prudence de Casembroot. The photo is undated but we can put it at 1976 or 1977 during the mayoralty of French. While the winner of the award, wearing a long white dress, is currently unidentified, we can just about recognise the face of the English actor, David Hemmings, on the far right. Seán French, served as Lord Mayor of Cork, from 1976 to 1977. He represented Cork in Dáil Éireann for 15 years and was a trusted confidante of former Taoiseach Jack Lynch; French ran alongside Lynch in the 1969 and 1973 general elections and would benefit from the large transfers from Lynch who had a huge surplus of votes. His father, also called Seán French, also served as both a Fianna Fáil TD and a Lord Mayor of Cork serving seven terms until his early death, age 47, in 1937. In addition to his political duties Seán French sat on the board of Glen Rovers and the Cork County Basketball Board were he was treasurer and at his funeral Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin, noted that French had made an enormous contribution to public life in Cork. Standing on the far left, in a striped shirt, is the actor George Baker. Baker (1931-2011) was a star of cinema, stage, and television. He is remembered by most for his role as Inspector Wexford in the successful Ruth Rendall crime drama television series The Ruth Rendell Mysteries (1987-2000). Baker has extensive television and film credits including The Dam Busters (Michael Anderson, 1955), Goodbye, Mr Chips (Herbert Ross, 1969) starring Peter O’Toole and Petula Clark, and The Spy Who Loved Me (Lewis Gilbert, 1977) with Roger Moore. The small group, pressed up against the dark curtains behind them, chat and laugh as they introduce themselves to each other. Hillery leans over the politician Gus Healy as he greets his companions.
