Hatfield, in a dress suit, is smiling as he looks to his right at his young companion. On his left a lady, in a white fur-trimmed jacket, smiles broadly at the camera. This is the only image we have of Hurd Hatfield in the archive and is particularly special because his name is forever associated with Cork in the naming of Hatfield House on Tobin Street. Hatfield House was the headquarters for the Cork film festival for many years and was named for Hurd Hatfield who was a friend of the festival. Hatfield House is now the home of Barbara Hubert Hand Bookbindery. Tobin Street itself is the home of the Triskel Arts Centre which is attached to the medieval Christchurch which fronts onto South Main Street. In 1984 excavations on this narrow street revealed medieval layers constituting backyards of houses that once fronted onto Tobin Street.  Hurd Hatfield (1917-1998) was born in New York City, studied drama in London, but eventually made his home in East Cork after visiting his friend, the actor Angela Lansbury, whom he met on the set of The Picture of Doran Gray, and who lived in nearby Conna. He restored the 13th-century Ballinterry House and spent the last twenty years or so of his life there. He made his name in Hollywood after playing the title role of Dorian Gray in the MGM film The Picture of Dorian Gray (Albert Lewin, 1945). His filmography includes The Diary of a Chambermaid (Jean Renoir, 1946), The Beginning or the End (Norman Taurog, 1947), Mickey One (Arthur Penn, 1961) with bit parts in movies such as The Boston Strangler (Richard Fleischer, 1968) and Her Alibi (Bruce Beresford, 1989).  Interestingly Hatfield was a student of the Russian-American actor and teacher Mikhail Chekhov, nephew of the playwright Anton Chekhov, and would perform extensively with his company in the former Soviet Union. His link with Russian culture was profound and on his death bed in Cork, he was attended to by a Russian Orthodox priest. Patrick O’Sullivan is sitting on Robin O’Sullivan’s desk who is looking up at him as they talk. A small stone sculpture, which might be a festival award, sits on the table between them and behind them, pinned to the back wall, we note a hand-drawn cartoon of a robin on top of a Coca-Cola can wrapped in film reel. Patrick O’Sullivan (1940-2015) was born in London to Irish parents and studied sculpture in England before moving to Cork in 1971. He lectured in sculpture at the Crawford College of Art and Design and during the time of this photo, dated 1980s, he was Head of Sculpture, a post he held from the 1980s to 1990s. O’Sullivan’s work, in marble, wood and bronze, has been exhibited around Ireland and his commission, City, made from Kilkenny limestone, was placed on the South Mall in Cork as part of the Cork 800 sculpture symposium in 1985. Patrick O’Sullivan was a member of Aosdána. Established in 1981, Aosdána was set up by the Arts Council to honor artists whose work has contributed to the arts in Ireland. Membership is by peer nomination and is limited to 250 living artists who have produced a distinguished body of work. Fellow artist and Aosdána member Michael Quane speaking of O’Sullivan notes that: "Patrick O’Sullivan was always insightful and never failed to challenge. Like his work, he too in his personal style was quiet, quizzical, and enigmatic. Breen, with a cigarette in hand, was a colleague of Sanquest for many years – they would have come across each other in Cork through their involvement with the theatre. For example, when the Cork Opera House burnt down in 1954 the Palace theatre, then managed by Dermot Breen, stepped in offering its stage to the Cork Operatic Society. Sanquest was then set-designer for the Cork Opera House and the Cork Operatic Society. By the late fifties Breen gave up managing the theatre in order to run the film festival and his job at the Palace was taken over by Dan Donovan. Frank Sanquest was also a journalist for the then Cork Examiner and worked as its arts editor from 1940 to 1987. He was the father of five children with his wife Rose, including the artist Kevin Sanquest and the writer Rosalind (Roz) Crowley. In 2009 Kevin Sanquest created a national portrait collection in Fota House, Carrigtwohill, Cork, titled Inheritance – Honouring the Cork Legacy; he passed away in 2013. Interestingly Kevin Sanquest was the first manager of the Cork music legend Rory Gallagher and the band Taste. His sister, the journalist and author Roz Crowley, refers to the legacy of Rory Gallagher in her book Macroom Mountain Dew – Memories of Ireland’s First Rock Festival (OnStream Publications Ltd., 2016). Gus Healy, seated on the far left, was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who would later serve Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. He is seated next to the artist Frank Sanquest, in half-rimmed spectacles and wearing his trade-mark dickie bow. Sanquest (1912-2008) was a Cork-born artist who worked for many years as resident set-designer for the Cork Opera House before it burnt down in 1954. He was on the board of the Southern Theatre Group with Dan Donovan and James N. Healy; they often toured with John B Keane plays, starring the Cork actor Michael Twomey who also came to the Cork Film Festival. Wearing a long patterned dress accessorised with an elaborate necklace, Cleveland is turned towards the compere smiling. Cleveland is best known to us for her work with the Monty Python troupe. She was the only woman associated with the show and would appear in thirty of the forty-five Monty Python episodes as well as the Monty Python films Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones 1975), Monty Python's Life of Brian (Terry Jones, 1979) and Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (Terry Jones, 1983). Terry Gilliam was also a visitor to the Cork Film Festival during the seventies. In 2014 Cleveland featured in the Monty Python Live (Mostly) show in the O2 London; it was their first live performance together in 16 years, without Graham Chapman who died in 1989, and the last with Terry Jones who died in 2020. The photo only identifies the archivist Liam O’Leary sitting second left, wearing a patterned dickie bow. Liam O’Leary (1910-1992), from Youghal, County Cork, was a film maker, film historian and archivist. He established the Liam O’Leary Archive to rescue Irish film-related objects, stories and ephemera. The collection includes his research into Irish, European and international cinema and film as well as his hand-written notes and correspondence on local events including the Cork International Film Festival. The archive can be viewed in Special Collections of the National Library of Ireland. They are probably at the Harp Lager-sponsored festival club and, as with the convivial crowd around them, they drink and chat, cigarette in hand. Helen Shapiro, in a white blouse and embroidered top accessorised with a festival ribbon, was a singing sensation in her day. Born in East London in 1946, she was a British singer whose repertoire included the blues, jazz, gospel and pop music. By the age of 15 she was England’s top recording star with You Don’t Know and Walking Back to Happiness earning her two gold discs. She toured and performed with the Beatles; John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song Misery for her but her then-management refused to let her record it. Shapiro’s film career was brief and she played herself in Play It Cool (Michael Winner,1962) and the lead female role in Its Trad, Dad! directed by Richard Lester (1962) who went on to direct the Beatles’ film Hard Day’s Night (1964). Her stage career includes the West End play Oliver by Lionel Bart and the part of Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Later she toured with the British jazz trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton and his band between 1984 and 2001, as well as touring with her one-woman show Simply Shapiro. Shapiro published her autobiography Walking Back to Happiness in 1993. Ferdy Mayne, on the right, cigar in hand, faces Breen as they chat. A festival ribbon is pinned to the left lapel of his jacket. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career and achieved international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including head vampire in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate; Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968); and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams (who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo). Mayne later featured in Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with Hannelore Elsner, who also came to Cork around the same time as this photo. (While this photo is marked 1970 it is possibly 1972 based on other items in the archive.) His final film role was as General Karl von Weber in the neo-Nazi political thriller The Killers Within (Paul Leder, 1995) before he returned to England, where he died in 1998 following the onset of Parkinson’s Disease. Elsner’s long-standing career ended only with her death in 2019, age 77. In the early 1970s Elsner appeared in The Stuff That Dreams are Made Of (Alfred Vohrer, 1972) and the German drama film Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with the German actor Ferdy Mayne, who also came to the Cork Film Festival in 1972. Elsner is best remembered in Germany for playing the title role of Inspector Lea Sommer, in a long-running German TV series Die Kommissarin (The Inspector) which ran from 1994 to 2006. She also played the lead role in the highly acclaimed black-and-white film Die Unberührbare (No Place to Go) (Oskar Roehler, 2000) based on the life of novelist Gisela Elstner, the mother of the director. The film went to the Cannes Film Festival and won Elsner the Deutscher Filmpreis (German Film Award) for Best Actress. In his review, The New York Times critic, A.O. Scott, notes that Elsner “holds the screen with the intensity of a silent-film goddess.” (Melissa Eddy, ‘Hannelore Elsner, Compelling German actor, is dead at 76,’ The New York Times, 10.05.2019.)
