Title A name given to the resource Festival Mass with Joe Tomelty Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Joe Tomelty, Festival Mass, St Francis Church, Liberty Street, Cork Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of Joseph Tomelty, the Irish character actor, novelist and playwright, reading from the pulpit of St. Francis' Church on Liberty Street in Cork. Joseph Tomelty (1911-1995) was a cultural tour de force from the North of Ireland known for his work on radio as well as the stage. His was a familiar face on the screen, with his distinctive white-haired, bushy-browed features. Born in County Down, on the east coast of Ulster, he was based in Northern Ireland where he made a significant contribution to its cultural history. He was instrumental in founding and managing the Group Theatre in Belfast in 1940 where his plays would be staged (apart from the controversial 1944 play The End House, which was premiered at the Abbey Theatre because the Northern theatres wouldn't show it). He wrote comedy dramas for the BBC, in particular The McCooeys which lasted seven years. He also worked in Hollywood but it was for his enduring committment to the North of Ireland that he is fondly remembered. In this image Tomelty is standing at the altar of the Byzantine-styled red-brick Church and Friary of St Francis. Behind him we can make out the elaborate decorated mosaic tiles of the apse behind the altar and beside him four priests stand with hands folded in prayer. St Francis Church was founded on Liberty Street in the mid-nineteenth century before being rebuilt in July 1953. It is tucked behind the Cork City Courthouse and partially stands on the site of old Broad Lane Church. Its city location and spacious interior made it an ideal location for the crowds that attended the annual Cork Film Festival St Finbarr Mass. Title A name given to the resource Heinz Rühmann and Dermot Breen Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Dermot Breen, Heinz Rühmann, Germany Description An account of the resource These black and white photos are of the German film actor Heinrich (Heinz) Rühmann and the film festival director Dermot Breen.  Heinz Rühmann, standing on the left in these photos, was born in 1902. He was a prolific German film and television actor who acted in over 100 films in his lifetime and is considered a film legend for his contribution to the German film industry. Rühmann managed to court all sectors of German society including the Third Reich, where seemingly he was a favourite of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels, as well as the diarist Ann Frank, who had his picture pinned on the wall of her hiding place, where it still hangs on display today. Rühman's filmography includes Er Kannes Nicht Lassen (Alex von Ambesser, 1962), based on the Father Brown stories by GK Chesterton, and the Hollywood-produced Ship of Fools (Stanley Kramer, 1965) with Vivien Leigh and Lee Marvin. His final film role was as Konrad in Faraway, So Close (1993) directed by Wim Wenders and starring Peter Falk and Nastassja Kinski. Rühmann died in 1994 and was posthumously awarded the 'Goldene Kamera' in 1995 for his contribution to German cinema. Towb, on the left, is looking down at his left wrist as if checking the time. The taller Twomey stands on the right, papers in hand, looking forward speaking into the microphone. Harry Towb (1925-2009) was a popular actor from Northern Ireland who was familiar on both screen and stage. He began his acting career travelling with theatrical groups on both sides of the border and following a move to London in the early 1950s his presence on the British stage was cemented. His work at the National Theatre was highly regarded including parts in Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs (1986), Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1996), and Nikolai Erdman’s Russian comedy The Mandate (2004). While his filmography is small but rich, it was his television work that brought his distinctive features to the television screens on a regular basis with credits including Dixon of Dock Green, Z Cars, Doctor Who, Holby City, and in 2008 - just a year before his death - EastEnders. Standing next to Towb in this image is the Cork-born actor, Michael Twomey, who was born in 1933. Twomey grew up on the Mardyke and attended the Presentation Brothers College before working in insurance, as did his friend and colleague Frank Duggan. Twomey worked with the playwright John B Keane, and acted in many of his productions including Many Young Men of Twenty, The Year of the Hiker' and Sharon’s Grave. Yet it was for his acting in the two-hander Cha and Miah, with Frank Duggan, that Twomey will be remembered. Wearing an old mac and scarf, Twomey would play Miah, with his friend Duggan in the part of Cha, and they would shoot the breeze about the politics of the day on the RTÉ television show Hall’s Pictorial Weekly. Title A name given to the resource Wolf Mankowitz at the Savoy Cinema, Cork Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Wolf Mankowitz, Savoy Cinema, James Bond Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the English screenwriter Wolf Mankowtiz and companions at the Savoy Cinema in Cork. The imposing figure of Mankowitz, dressed in all black, stands on the right of the photo, slightly turned to his left whilst in conversation with another man. To the left of the photo are two unidentified companions, a younger man with curly dark hair, wearing a velvet jacket accessorised with a scarf at his neck, and in front of him we can just make out the features of a young lady with similar dark curly hair, looking down with a smile on her lips. Mankowitz (1924-1998) was an award-winning English screenwriter and author known for his novels, plays, and screenplays. Mankowitz was of Jewish descent, born in the East End of London. However, following altercations with the English revenue, he moved to Ireland to avail of Charles Haughey’s generous tax policy towards artists and settled in Cork in 1971. He was a successful screenwriter in the 1950s and wrote screenplays for his own works and adapted others including A Kid for Two Farthings (Carol Reed, 1953) and The Millionairess (Anthony Asquith, 1960) starring Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers. He was one of the screenwriters on the first James Bond film Dr No (Terence Young, 1962) but asked for his name to be removed from the credits as he thought it poor; he also collaborated on the Bond movie Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 1976). In 1972 Mankowitz wrote and directed The Hebrew Lesson starring Milo O’Shea, Patrick Dawson, and Harry Towb (who can also be found in this archive). The film is set in Cork in 1921 during the War of Independence and is about the friendship between an IRA man, escaping pursuit from the Black and Tans, and an elderly man at a synagogue. Mankowitz wrote the screenplay having being told the story about an IRA man hiding in a small synagogue in Dublin’s Lennox Street (TCD Irish Film and TV Research Online: tcd.ie/irishfilm).  It was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1972 and, despite the photo being marked 1960s, might suggest that the photo was taken around then. Interestingly the Guardian reported that the British M15 kept a security file on Mankowitz for more than a decade suspecting that he was a possible communist agent following his marriage to Ann Seligmann, in 1944, as she was a communist party member. The investigation was dropped when the M15 informant insisted that Mankowitz’s leftwing sympathies had disappeared noting that “He comes to the college every morning with a copy of the Times.” (Alan Travis, The Guardian, 26.08.2010.)
