Both Lynda Bellingham and Linda Hayden feature in the archive extensively from their visit to Cork in the 1970s. Hayden, on the far right in this picture, wearing jeans and a white blouse, was best known for her roles in British horror films and sex comedies such as Hammer’s Taste the Blood of Dracula (Peter Sasdy, 1970) starring Christopher Lee, The Blood on Satan’s Claw (Piers Haggard, 1971), Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (1977) by the Irish director Norman Cohen. Hayden was the partner of the actor Robin Askwith for some time in the 1970s, and who also starred in the Confessions sex comedy series. Askwith would be the best man at the wedding of Lynda Bellingham and the film producer Greg Smith  – both of whom were at the Cork Film Festival in the 1970s. Bellingham, at the centre of this picture, wearing a long light-coloured dress, worked with her husband Smith and the Irish director Cohen in a number of movies including Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Clare Brough, 1976) and Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977) starring Robin Askwith, Pamela Stephenson and Miriam Margolyes. She has a mischievous grin on her face and little else except bath bubbles to dress her. The location of the bath is not identified but as the photo is credited to the Cork-based photographer Donal Sheehan we guess that the bathroom must be Cork-based too. The white-tiled bathroom, with a white transistor radio perched on the ledge of the bath, provides the perfect backdrop to the olive-toned skin of a glowing Bellingham. Born in 1948 and adopted later that year, Lynda Bellingham was an English actor, broadcaster, and author who was a familiar presence on British television, in particular for her work as a lunchtime chat show host on ‘Loose Women’ between 2007 and 2011, with whom she made more than 300 appearances. She also had a long-standing television career with such shows as All Creatures Great and Small and Doctor Who, as well as film credits that include Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Claire Brough, 1976) and Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977) which would have coincided with her visit to the festival in the late seventies. Bellingham was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2013 for her services to charity work. She published her autobiography There’s Something I’m Dying to Tell You in 2014, shortly before her death from cancer later that year, at the age of 66. Redgrave, wearing a light-coloured cheesecloth blouse with glass beads and a broad-brimmed hat, is smiling at Elford as she passes over the award. Behind them we can make out the advertising billboard for the Cork Film International Festival. The award, an engraved bronze-style relief with a Celtic image, is inscribed Film Society Award, Film International 1972. Elford received it for Pass of Arms which he wrote, produced and directed. It featured the English folk singer Sandy Denny (1947-1978) on the soundtrack which was written by Don Fraser. Denny, who was the lead singer of the British folk band Fairport Convention, died a few years later in 1978. Pass of Arms was Peter Elford’s only film as a director. He is credited as a production and location manager for a number of television programmes since then, especially for work during the 1980s and 1990s, including The Long Good Friday (John Mackenzie, 1981), The Lair of the White Worm (Ken Russell, 1988), and King Ralph (David Ward, 1991). Redgrave was an English actor born in 1943. She has an extensive stage, television, and film career and has been nominated for two Golden Globe awards as well as being a two-time Oscar nominee. Her films include the Oscar-nominated Georgy Girl (Silvio Narizzano, 1966), Shine (Scott Hicks, 1996) with Geoffrey Rush, and Bill Condon’s God and Monsters (1998) with Ian McKellan and Brendan Fraser. Around the time of this photo she had just completed the Woody Allen comedy film Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But Were Afraid to Ask) (1972) starring Woody Allen, Burt Reynolds, Gene Wilder and John Carradine. The only guest identified at the back of this undated photo is the singer and dancer Margaret Savage, on the far left, wearing a fur hat accessorised with a fur scarf. She smiles broadly at the camera, arms folded, while her companions chat to each other. Savage was a singer and dancer who worked on The Black and White Minstrel Show with the choreographer Roy Gunson who also attended the London event. The man on the far right, holding liqueur glasses to be refilled, and chatting with an unidentified companion, might be Richard ‘Dick’ Beamish from Cork. The reception, hosted by the London Friends of the Festival, was held at the Martini International Club whose logo is printed on the front of this promotional photograph. The Martini Terrace, built in 1959, is an iconic landmark that sits on the top floor of the 18-storey New Zealand House in London. The skyscraper is located at the corner of Haymarket and Pall Mall with a view, that we can just about glimpse, towards Trafalgar Square and beyond. In the background we can see bottles of spirits lined up as if in a bar. Maureen Swanson (1932-2011) was a Scottish actor who featured in cinema as a contract player for the Rank Organisation, for a brief period during the 1950s before she retired from acting on marriage to Viscount Ednam and becoming Lady Dudley. She has an extensive filmography for this period including Moulin Rouge (John Huston, 1952), A Town like Alice (Jack Lee, 1956) and The Spanish Gardener (Philip Leacock, 1956) opposite Dirk Bogarde. Swanson was involved in two libel cases following her relationship with the osteopath and artist, Stephen Ward (1912-1963), who would be a key player in the 1963 Profumo affair. She denied being one of 'Stephen's girls' as claimed by Christine Keeler (1942-2017) in her book on the affair and won both libel cases. She appears to be walking carefully down the stone steps of the steep spiral stairwell of the Castle. She is wearing an elegant coat adorned with a fur stole around her lower arms. In the background, we can see foliage through a small medieval window with metal bars. Swanson (1932-2011) was a Scottish actor who featured in cinema as a contract player for the Rank Organisation, for a brief period during the 1950s, before she retired from acting on marriage to Viscount Ednam and becoming Lady Dudley. She has an extensive filmography for this period including Moulin Rouge (John Huston, 1952), A Town like Alice (Jack Lee, 1956), and The Spanish Gardener (Philip Leacock, 1956) opposite Dirk Bogarde. Swanson was involved in two libel cases following her relationship with the osteopath and artist, Stephen Ward (1912-1963), who would be a key player in the 1963 Profumo affair. Donovan, holding a festival brochure dated 1972, is smiling broadly as he reaches out to shake Audley’s hand. Donovan (1926-2008) was a founding member of Cork’s Everyman Theatre and Cork’s cultural legacy owes much to his passion and love of the arts. He was a board director of the Cork Choral Festival as well as the Cork Film Festival. Donovan was also an actor and a beloved teacher at the Presentation Brothers College in Cork, where he taught for almost 40 years, and whose theatre is named after him. In 2008 the Everyman, in association with Collins Press, published Dan Donovan: An Everyman’s Life to mark his 80th birthday. He died, age 92, in 2008. At the time of this picture, in 1972, Maxine Audley (1923-1992) had just completed her final film role in Running Scared (David Hemmings, 1972). Running Scared was directed and co-written by David Hemmings who also came to the Cork Film Festival during the seventies. Audley was an English stage and film actor who consistently worked in theatre to high acclaim. She toured with the Old Vic and worked in the West End and Stratford with John Gielgud, Kenneth Tynan, and Peter Brook. Audley also worked in television, radio and over 20 films, including Charlie Chaplin’s satirical comedy A King in New York (1957), which also starred the English actor Dawn Addams who came to the Cork festival in its early days. Pertwee, in a dinner jacket with a Cork Film International ribbon pinned to its left lapel, is turned towards Annis with his arm around her shoulders. He was an English playwright and screenwriter from a prolific family of actors including his father the actor and playwright Roland Pertwee, his brother the actor Jon Pertwee, best known for his Dr Who, and his nephew the actor Sean Pertwee. As well as TV work Michael Pertwee’s screenwriting credits include Richard Lester’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966) with an award-winning score by Stephen Sondheim and One More Time (Jerry Lewis, 1970) starring Sammy Davis Jr. At the time of this photo, dated 1972, he had just finished Digby, the Biggest Dog in the World (Joseph McGrath, 1973) with an all-star cast including Spike Milligan and Milo O’Shea. Annis, in a light-coloured cheesecloth tunic, was in Cork with her co-star Jon Finch from Roman Polanski’s Macbeth (1971). She started acting as a teenager with Cleopatra (Joseph Mankiewicz,1962) starring Elizabeth Taylor and went on to have a prolific film career including roles in Krull (Peter Yates, 1983), Dune (David Lynch, 1984) and the directorial debut by Prince, Under the Cherry Moon (1986). Her most recent film King of Thieves (James Marsh, 2018) is based on the Hatton Garden safe deposit heist, starring Michael Caine, Tom Courtenay, Michael Gambon and Jim Broadbent.
