They are both laughing as Stevens looks down at her notes. Born in 1942, Tate is best known for his role as a pilot in the British-Italian 1970s science fiction television series Space: 1999 (1975-1977) with Martin Landau. Tate also had parts in many Australian and American television shows including The X-Files, Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Star Trek: The Next Generation (1990) and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1998). His filmography includes parts in Licensed to Love and Kill (Lindsay Shonteff, 1979), Cry Freedom (Richard Attenborough, 1987) and the Japanese heist film Lupin III (Ryuhei Kitamura, 2014). In 2000 Tate provided the voice of a character, Ozzie Mandrill, from the adventure game Escape from Monkey Island (LucasArts). Elaine Stevens is a Cork theatre stalwart who celebrated her 100th birthday in April 2020. Born in Wales she moved to Cork with her husband Alan who worked on the oil refinery in Whitegate. Stevens performed with the Everyman in the Little Theatre in Castle Street, at Father Matthew Hall and at the Palace. In 1967 Stevens won the All Ireland Best Actor Award for her performance in the Sidney Howard-Emlyn Williams play The Late Christopher Bean. The small group is at a drinks reception on the grounds of Ashbourne House in Glounthaune, Cork, during the 1970s. The photo, which is water-damaged, also includes Dick Beamish, his unidentified colleague, and Jack Mahoney. Liam O’Leary, on the far left of the photo turned towards Cusack, was born in 1910 in Youghal, County Cork. He was many things in life including film historian, filmmaker, author, actor, and founder of the Irish Film Society. And, perhaps most importantly for Ireland, he was an archivist. O’Leary was an acquisitions officer for the National Film Archive in London until 1966 when he returned to Ireland to work as a Film Acceptance Viewer for Radio Telefis Éireann. His love for the cinema was profound and he established the Liam O’Leary Archive to rescue Irish film-related objects, stories, and ephemera. He was the driving force behind the Irish Film Archive and his film collection is preserved there. (Kevin Brownlow, Obituary: Liam O’Leary, Independent, 18.12.1992.) In 1986 the Liam O’Leary Archive was donated to the National Library of Ireland where it is now preserved. The photo shows the Opera House lit up in neon lights advertising the film festival. The long exposure of the shot lights up the light trails of the traffic along Lavitts Quay on the right. While this photo is marked 1980s the large gorilla probably references the imagery of the 1994 Cork Film Festival, for which the artist Kieran O'Connor designed a poster and programme cover showing 'King Kong' standing on top of the Shandon Bells & Tower of St Anne's Church in Shandon, Cork. The façade of the Opera House has changed since this photo was taken and in 2003 renovation works on the façade of the building and the surrounding Emmet Place were completed. Emmet Place, at the entrance to the Opera House, has since been redeveloped into a plaza-like square. The fly-tower, seen behind the neon sign in this photo, is still in place however. For many years it provided the backdrop to the iconic Toyota roof sign which occupied 3 sides of the tower on the north, east and west. The Toyota sign has since been replaced by UCC signage in a new collaboration with UCC and the old Toyota letters, at 1.5 metres tall, were recommissioned by the Greek artist Bill Balaskas whose work 'Red Air' transformed the six Toyota letters into a public art installation. The film festival moved to the Opera House in the mid-eighties whilst under the stewardship of Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan, after negotiations with the Opera House manager Dick Hill. Around this time Charlie Hennessy, the festival chairman, secured funding from Ford Ireland, just before it closed down, providing the festival with an injection of funding along with the Irish Film Board and RTÉ. In 1985 the festival opened at the Opera House offering Cork an alternative 1000-seated venue for its screenings. Title A name given to the resource Poet John Montague and companion Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, John Montague, Theo Dorgan, University College Cork Description An account of the resource This is a colour photo of the Irish poet John Montague with an unidentified companion at a drinks reception. The photo is undated and uncredited but is of value to the archive given the legacy of Montague to poetry and his affiliation with the film festival through his friendship with the poet Theo Dorgan. Whilst born in New York, Montague came to Ireland as a child and ended up teaching at the University College Cork (UCC) at the invitation of the then Professor of English Seán Lucy. Montague spent almost sixteen years at UCC before teaching in America, Belfast and Dublin. His early work includes Forms of Exile (1958), Poisoned Lands (1961), A Chosen Light (1967) and The Rough Field (1972). By the mid-eighties he found a new publisher, Peter Fallon of Gallery Press, who revitalised Montague’s publishing oeuvre, including his fiction and memoir. Montague was a founding member of Aosdána, a founding president of the Triskel Arts Centre in Cork, and in 2010 he was made Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur in France, also receiving a doctorate from the Sorbonne. He died in 2016 in Nice, France, where he had a home with his third wife, the writer Elizabeth Wassell. Montague counted Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney as friends and was a charismatic and generous-spirited mentor to many poets in Cork and beyond, including the Cork-born poet Theo Dorgan. Dorgan, also a member of Aosdána, was a key player in the reimagining of the Cork Film Festival along with Mick Hannigan in the early eighties. The mascots, dressed as film negatives, are holding balloons decorated with the 1996 festival logo which helps us date this photo to the 28th edition of the festival. They show the convivial Robin O’Sullivan, in photos marked 1980s, in conversation with festival attendees. O’Sullivan stepped in to run the film festival after the unexpected death of the festival founder Dermot Breen in 1978, and ran it until Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan took up the cudgels in the early eighties. O’Sullivan originally worked as a journalist for the then-Cork Examiner and as a reporter for RTÉ news. He set up his own PR company – O’Sullivan Public Relations Ltd – in the early eighties which has since amalgamated with the successful public relations company AM O’Sullivan PR, run by his daughter Ann-Marie O’Sullivan. At the 50th anniversary of the film festival the former festival president, Charlie Hennessy, acknowledged the contribution of O’Sullivan to the festival noting that he “kept this festival alive when it was in very low water”. O’Sullivan, with a rose in the lapel of his jacket, is turned towards Larkin as she speaks to him. Born in Dublin, Larkin played parts in the British thriller film The Internecine Project (Ken Hughes, 1974), BBC drama Wessex Tales (1973) and the Australian miniseries Against the Wind (1978), which ran for 13 episodes. Larkin played the leading role of ‘Mary Mulvane’ in Against the Wind about the transportation of Irish convicts to New South Wales in Australia during the late 18th century. Larkin is married to the Irish stage, film, and television actor Jim Norton who starred as Bishop Brennan in the Channel 4 production Father Ted (1995-1998). Robin O’Sullivan was the festival director for a few years in the early eighties, after the untimely death of the festival founder Dermot Breen in 1978. O'Sullivan ran the festival on a voluntary basis until Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan took up the cudgels in 1985. O’Sullivan originally worked as a journalist for the then-Cork Examiner and for RTÉ news before setting up his own PR company in the early eighties – which has since amalgamated with AM O’Sullivan PR run by his daughter Ann-Marie O’Sullivan. The former festival president Charlie Hennessy acknowledged the contribution of O’Sullivan at the 50th anniversary of the festival noting that O’Sullivan “kept this festival alive when it was in very low water”. Title A name given to the resource Charlie Hennessy and others Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Charlie Hennessy, Mick Hannigan Description An account of the resource This is a colour photo of former festival chairman Charlie Hennessy with unidentified companions at a drinks reception. Hennessy, on the left, with a drink in hand, looks up somewhat forlornly to the camera. His companions, also holding drinks, pose for the camera in front of gilt-framed art work adorning the walls behind them. (This might be the same drinks reception attended by the poet John Montague in a similarly uncredited photo and can be viewed in the archive by clicking on Montague’s ‘tag’ below.) Charlie Hennessy, a senior partner of JW O’Donovan Solicitors on Cork’s South Mall, made a tremendous contribution to the Cork Film Festival. On his death in 2008, Mick Hannigan, the then festival director, noted that Hennessy’s contribution to the cultural life of Cork was immense. Along with Dermot Breen, Hennessy was involved with the film festival since its inception in 1956. He was its chairperson for twenty-one years from 1985 to 2005 and continued to work for the festival, and for the Cork Opera House, attending board meeting up until his death, age 77. Hennessy attended the Presentation Brothers College on the Mardyke, playing rugby for his school and University College Cork. As well as sport, and the film festival, his interest in the arts included involvement with the Presentation Theatre Guild, Cork Operatic Society, the Gilbert and Sullivan group and the Southern Theatre Group. Hennessy was a member of the Arts Council from 1998 to 1993. Title A name given to the resource Theo Dorgan and friend at Cork Airport Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Theo Dorgan, Cork Airport Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the poet Theo Dorgan with an unidentified companion at Cork Airport. They are both sheltering from the rain under a Ford-sponsored umbrella in front of the old terminal of Cork Airport. Prior to the arrival of Cork Airport over-seas visitors travelled to the festival on the Dublin-Cork train. The Irish actor David Kelly, recalling the train journey from Dublin to Cork, noted: "Irish hospitality was at its finest on that train, an elegant Orient Express atmosphere wrapped in a thoroughly Celtic welcome that made strangers who got on in Dublin lifelong friends by the time it arrived in Cork. Revelry and romance are the two words that come mostly to mind when I recall the journey." (John Daly, Irish Examiner, 04.11.2017) However, the arrival of the airport in 1961 was seen as a great opportunity for the festival to bring more tourists and delegates to the festival and many photographs in the archive show guests arriving, departing, or posing at the airport. The old airport was a convivial spot – children and adults would congregate on the upper floor watching the arriving and departing aircraft during an era when such things held a certain amount of awe. The old terminal was later decommissioned in 2006, on the opening of the new terminal just down the way, and with it the conviviality of the old gave way to the functionality of the new.
