We can date the image to 1972 from the inscription on the base of the award - which was originally designed by the Cork-born sculptor Seamus Murphy. Towb, standing on the left of this picture, is turned towards the Mitchells who both hold a liqueur glass and cigarette in hand. Harry Towb (1925-2009) was a popular actor from Northern Ireland who began his acting career travelling with theatrical groups on both sides of the border. His work at the English National Theatre was highly regarded including parts in Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs (1986), Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1996), and Nikolai Erdman’s Russian comedy The Mandate (2004). The film critic Eric Shorter wrote of him: "Towb was one of the gentlest, most imaginative and thoughtful actors of his generation… He was always on the stage if he could afford it – taking television and film work to balance out his income." (The Guardian, 30.07.2009.) In this photo, Towb is talking to the writer James Mitchell (1926-2002) and his wife Delia to whom he was married from 1968 until her death in 1990. Mitchell was a prolific writer, writing under his own name and the pen names James Munro and Patrick O McGuire. He wrote the successful television series When the Boat Comes In (BBC) which ran between 1976 and 1981. Around the time of this photo, dated 1972, Mitchell had just completed a successful run of Callan (Thames Television), which ran between 1969 and 1972, starring Edward Woodward as the hitman David Callan. The small convivial group is turned towards each other smiling as they chat. Laurence Harvey (1928-1973) died from cancer the year after this picture was taken. He was a Lithuanian-born English actor and director and has a prolific filmography. Around the time this image was taken he had starred in Escape to the Sun (Menahem Golan, 1972) and The Deep (Orson Welles, 1970) which was an unfinished film directed by Orson Welles. When Harvey died in 1973 it ended any chance of Welles finishing the picture. Wetherell, at the centre, in a dark-patterned dress, is turned to her companion and smiling. Both Wetherell and Briant worked together in the British horror film Demons of the Mind directed by Peter Sykes which was released in 1972 – the year that this photo was taken at the festival. Born in 1943, Virginia Wetherell was an English actor best known for her roles in Hammer horror films such as Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde (Roy Ward Baker, 1971) and aforementioned Demons of the Mind. She also appeared, as the naked actor tempting Malcolm McDowell as Alex, in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange in 1971. Wetherell had a large body of television work throughout the 1960s to the 1980s, including the part of Dyoni in the first Dalek story series of Doctor Who. In 1971 Wetherell opened a vintage clothes shop in London’s Notting Hill, known as Virginia, shutting down in 2015 when Wetherell (now Bates) turned 72.  Wetherell's companion in this picture is the actor and novelist, London-born Shane Briant. Briant studied at Trinity College Dublin before becoming an actor best known for his roles in Hammer Film Productions. He has many television credits, both in England and Australia where he settled, as well as film credits including the British Cold War thriller The Mackintosh Man (John Huston, 1973) with Paul Newman and James Mason (who can also be found in this archive), and as Clifford Chatterley in Lady Chatterley's Lover (Just Jaeckin, 1981). Briant's first short film, A Message from Fallujah (Richard Gibson, Shane Briant, 2005), won a 'Best of the Fest' award at the 2005 Los Angeles International Short Film Festival and was considered for an Academy Award that year. Annis, in a light-coloured cheesecloth tunic, was in Cork with her co-star Jon Finch from Roman Polanski’s Macbeth (1971). She started acting as a teenager with Cleopatra (Joseph Mankiewicz,1962) starring Elizabeth Taylor and went on to have a prolific film career including roles in Krull (Peter Yates, 1983), Dune (David Lynch, 1984) and the directorial debut by Prince, Under the Cherry Moon (1986). They are probably sitting under the Harp Lager-sponsored umbrella of the festival club and are chatting, drinking, and smoking as are the animated guests who sit at tables around them. Jon Finch, at the right of the photo in a leather jacket pulling on a cigarette, was an English film and stage actor born in 1942. He was a handsome in demand actor who achieved some notoriety for turning down plum roles when offered them due to a self-proclaimed lack of ambition, such as the chance to replace Sean Connery and play James Bond in Live and Let Die (Guy Hamilton, 1973) (the part went to Roger Moore instead). In the early 1970s Finch played supporting roles in Hammer Horror productions The Horror of Frankenstein (Jimmy Sangster, 1970) and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) with Dawn Addams, a regular visitor to the Cork Film Festival in its earlier days, with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo. But it was for his Shakespearean roles Finch would become well known. Most famously he played Macbeth in Macbeth (aka The Tragedy of Macbeth) (Roman Polanski, 1971) alongside his companion in this picture, Francesca Annis, as Lady Macbeth. Finch also starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy (1972) as well the BBC television productions Richard II (1978), Henry IV, parts one and two (1979), and as Don Pedro in the BBC’s Much Ado About Nothing (1984). His final film role was in the historical drama Kingdom of Heaven (Ridley Scott, 2005) alongside Orlando Bloom and Eva Green. Finch died in 2012, age 71. Francesca Annis, chatting to her companion in this picture, is also an English film and stage actor with a prolific film career. At the time of this photo she had just completed Macbeth (1971) with Jon Finch, directed by Roman Polanski, whose wife Sharon Tate had recently been murdered in Hollywood by followers of Charles Manson. The film was financed by the Playboy magazine editor Hugh Hefner as mainstream studios refused to finance it given Polanski’s mental state and yet, despite its critical mauling at the time, the film has gone on to garner plaudits for its somewhat accurate depiction of a bleak violent world. As Polanski notes: … [the film] is violent. But the play is violent. And life is violent too. Title A name given to the resource Noel Purcell with Josef Locke Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Noel Purcell, Josef Locke, Carmel Dignam Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photograph of the actor Noel Purcell in conversation with the Irish tenor Josef Locke and probably his wife Carmel Dignam. Purcell and Locke, in formal suits, accessorised with a festival ribbon, are huddled together in conversation with Purcell gesticulating with his hand outstretched towards Dignam who looks on, glass in hand. Noel Purcell (1900-1985) had a distinguished career on stage and in film. However he did gain some recognition as a singer for his rendition of The Dublin Saunter, a song composed for him by the songwriter Leo Maguire (1903-1985). Purcell was given the Freedom of the City of Dublin in June 1984, a short time before his death in 1985. Derry-born Joseph McLaughlin, known professionally as Josef Locke, was born in 1917 and was particularly successful for his singing during the 1940s and 1950s. He worked as an Irish Guard and served abroad with the Palestine Police Force, before returning to Ireland to work for the Royal Ulster Constabulary in the late 1930s. He appeared in a small number of films, as himself, including Holidays with Pay (John E Blakeley, 1948) and What a Carry On! (John E Blakeley, 1949). However it is for his singing he is best remembered – in particular for his recordings of Blaze Away, The Town I Loved So Well, and Hear My Song. He had somewhat protracted legal wranglings with the British tax-man over the years – and would successfully appeal various court sentences and demands. In later years Locke was honoured with recognition from the Variety Artists Trust, The Late Late Show, and an award-winning film based on his life, Hear My Song (Peter Chelsom) in 1991, a few years before his death in 1999. Title A name given to the resource German actor Ferdy Mayne with Michael Twomey Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Ferdy Mayne, Michael Twomey Description An account of the resource <ol start="346"></ol> This is a black and white photo of the German-born actor Ferdy Mayne on stage with the Irish actor Michael Twomey.  Mayne on the left of this photo, with his distinctive dark eye brows, is speaking into the microphone while Twomey looks on, papers in hand. Born in Cork, Michael Twomey (1933-2017) grew up on the Mardyke and attended the Presentation Brothers College. Twomey will be remembered in Cork, and beyond, for his two-hander Cha and Miah with his friend Frank Duggan on the RTÉ television show Hall’s Pictorial Weekly. His other stage work included work with the playwright John B Keane for whom he played in many of his productions, including Many Young Men of Twenty, The Year of the Hiker and Sharon’s Grave. He gave his last stage performance as in 2015 two years before his death. In 2013, along with Frank Duggan and Billa O’Connell, Twomey was awarded the Freedom of Cork City for his “unwavering lifetime contribution to professional and amateur theatre, arts, drama and song.” (The Irish Times, 09.09.2017) The actor Ferdinand ‘Ferdy’ Mayne, was born in Germany in 1916. Being a Jew, he was sent to England from Germany as a child to stay with his aunt and later attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the Old Vic School. A fluent German speaker he was in demand for propaganda broadcasts during the Second World War and supposedly operated as an informant for the M15. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career. His stage work includes the role of Max in the long-running Rodgers and Hammerstein production The Sound of Music. Mayne would later achieve international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including head vampire in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate, Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968), and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams (who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo). Mayne later featured in Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with Hannelore Elsner, who was in Cork too around the same time as this photo, and he also worked with Kubrick in Barry Lyndon (Stanley Kubrick, 1975).  In his later years Mayne worked mainly in Europe where he was a favourite with German audiences, and lived in America, working until the late 1990s. His final film role was as General Karl von Weber in the neo-Nazi political thriller The Killers Within (Paul Leder, 1995) before he returned to England, where he died in 1998 following the onset of Parkinson’s Disease.
