The photos are undated, but we might suggest they are from the late 1980s/early 1990s. We include the second photo of an unidentified person for its similarity to the first photo. It shows a festival colleague sitting in the same white-washed festival office as Hannigan, with its fern-like plant on the office cabinet and a poster of the German short Tour d'Amour (Veit El-Mer, 1989) which helps us date this image. The first photo shows Hannigan, mug in hand, working at his office desk under the painted cladding of the vaulted ceiling. Cork-born Hannigan had a keen interest in film since his time at University College Cork (UCC) as a member of its film society. He is a former member of the Irish Film Board, the European Film Academy, and worked as a programmer for the Irish Film Institute in the 1990s. As co-director of the Triskel Arts Centre in the eighties, Hannigan worked with Theo Dorgan, and together they ran the film festival after the resignation of O'Sullivan in 1985. In 2013, following his departure from the film festival, Hannigan set up the <a href="https://indiecork.com/">IndieCork Film Festival</a> with festival programmer Úna Feely who had worked for the Cork festival for many years. To the right, leaning against the wall of the arched lobby, we note the distinctive profile of an androgynous glam-rock devotee, dressed in a brass-buttoned jacket, typical of the early 1970s when this picture was taken. The Long Valley hosts a weekly poetry event called Ó Bhéal (word of mouth) in its Hayloft Bar. So the presence of the former film festival director reading poetry from the rostrum, decorated with a poster marked Poetry “Live” All Day, might not seem incongruous to Corkonians familiar with the bohemian bent of the Long Valley. Also known as Moynihan’s Long Valley Bar, the Long Valley opened its doors in 1842. It was run for many years by Mr (Humphrey) Moynihan and Mrs (Rita) Moynihan before being taken over by their son Peader Moynihan who runs it in the same fashion as his parents, and his grandfather John Moynihan before them. It is one of the few bars in Cork that retains a snug, just inside the doors on the left, where the etched windows throw light onto the large table that was once the property of the American Embassy in Dublin. Further into the main bar, the hand-crafted tables include a singular large circular table that you’d be lucky to bag on a busy December day. In his article on the Long Valley, Dan Hickey tells us that it came from the Celtic, a White Star Line ship that ran aground off Roche’s Point near Cork Harbour in December 1928. Many patrons have sat around these historic tables with a Long Valley pint and an iconic doorstep sandwich. And, as the poet and former film festival organiser, Theo Dorgan notes: “It would take a strong man in the full of his health, with the help of three small children, to munch through their mouth-watering sandwiches.” A sculpted bust of the troubled Irish composer, Frederick May (1911-1985), by the Cork-born sculptor Séamus Murphy, sits amongst the artworks on display in the Long Valley, and we note its presence because Murphy designed the St Finbarr statuette which was handed out to award winners in the early decades of the film festival. The photo is marked '1980s' coinciding with Hannigan’s stewardship of the festival. He stands on the right of the photo, glass in hand, smiling broadly at the camera. Nesbitt, leaning forward with his hand on the shoulder of a beaming child, and his companion in a light-coloured dress, also smile for the camera. Behind them, artwork adorns the walls of the unidentified location. Hannigan worked for the festival for 27 years until leaving in 2013. Together they were a formidable team and consolidated the work of the festival bringing short and independent films to big venues such as the Cork Opera House. Hannigan later opened the first art-house cinema in Cork – The Kino – based on Washington Street at the top of the Western Road in 1996. It shut down in 2009 but for many years ran both popular and art-house films and, in conjunction with the Cork Film Festival, brought retrospective and cultural films to Cork. Hannigan and Feely also run the independent film company Green Ray Film Agency which provides a broad range of services to filmmakers, festivals and event organisers. The photo shows Hannigan sitting on the edge of the office desk, leaning on the monitor of the IBM-type PC. His colleagues sit and stand around the desk posing for the camera. We recognise the artist Kieran O’Connor standing at the back in glasses. O’Connor is an artist and graphic designer based in Cork. A graduate of University College Cork, O’Connor worked for the festival under the stewardship of Hannigan, and his contribution to the festival can be recognised in the artwork of festival posters, programmes and logos. His art reflects a sense of place, and we can see this in his work on posters and programme covers in the archive, in particular how he often entwined the imagery of film and festival with that of Cork itself. O’Connor is a founding member of the Cork Film Centre which is a resource centre for aspiring young filmmakers in the Cork area. The centre also facilitates the successful <a href="https://firstcutfilmfestival.com/">First Cut! Youth Film Festival</a> - a youth-centred festival dedicated to showing films made by young filmmakers. In front of O’Connor, perched on the edge of the desk, we note the then press officer, Ruth Riddick, in a floral shirt. Riddick was press officer for the festival from 1990 to 1995 before serving on the Board of Directors in 1996. Riddick also worked for the Dublin Film Festival in the early nineties, and as a campaigner and activist until her move to America where she is now based. In America, Riddick works as an educator and counsellor through her education company Sobriety Together. She is a prolific writer and her work has been published in the Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing (2000), among other publications including Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum (Riddick et al, Quinnipiac University, 2002). Suzanne Macdougald (1945-) was a celebrated Irish model during the 1960s and 1970s. Fashion photography was just coming into focus and she was one of a small cohort of models, including Ann Davis, Adrienne Ring, and Grace O’Shaughnessy, that would become well-known during this time working for the designers Ib Jorgensen and Sybil Connolly. Nimwegen was a member of the Advertising Producers Association (APA) which is a the trade body for the commercials production industry. Title A name given to the resource Miss Movie Girl at the airport Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Miss Movie Girl, Airport, Betty Philbin Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of Miss Movie Girl 1973, Betty Philbin, taken on the mobile stairway of an aeroplane with a group of family and associates. The stairway is marked with the Aer Lingus logo and we might guess that this picture was taken at Cork Airport. Philbin in large sunglasses, is standing on the stairway, wearing a white suit accessorised with a sash marked ‘CFI Movie Girl.’ She is accompanied by her sister and others identified as Jack O'Sullivan, Brian Coomber, Mary O'Keeffe, Charlie Cullinane and Fergus Gilligan. Miss Movie Girl was a ‘Rose of Tralee’ type contest that ran for a few brief years in the seventies. Run in conjunction with the Sunday World newspaper, it was a contest of county representatives vying for the ultimate title of Miss Movie Girl. It was an enticing affair, the winner would meet with celebrities, be showered with prizes and go on to promote the festival throughout Ireland. In 2015 a former Miss Movie Girl competitor, Catherine Tracy, was tracked down and invited to attend that years film festival as a guest of honour. She remembered her time in the Miss Movie Girl competition fondly and recalled meeting the French film director François Truffaut along with the blues guitar legend Rory Gallagher and the English actor Trevor Howard who were in Cork in that year. She is posing for the camera in a garden setting, wearing jeans and a denim shirt with some buttons undone to the waist. These might be the images Philbin sent to the Sunday World newspaper as part of her entry to the Miss Movie Girl competition which she would later win in 1973. Philbin, age 20 from Galway, was a former Tyler’s Model Girl, and a Salthill Princess. As part of her prize, she represented the film festival, and Ireland, at national and international events including the Arnhem Film Festival in Holland where she appeared on Dutch television and spoke on the radio there. Philbin, wearing a white suit accessorised with large sunglasses, and surrounded by her luggage, is accompanied by her sister, also in similarly large sunglasses. A similar item in the archive shows Philbin and her sister at the airport with film festival committee members and we might suppose that they are on festival business as part of the winning prize from the Miss Movie Girl competition. In October 1973 Philbin travelled to an International Congress in Venice where she hosted an Irish Whiskey event in the Hotel Excelsior in Lido, Venice. She was also a guest of the organisers of the Arnhem Film Festival in Holland that year.
