Title A name given to the resource Festival Mass with Joe Tomelty Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Joe Tomelty, Festival Mass, St Francis Church, Liberty Street, Cork Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of Joseph Tomelty, the Irish character actor, novelist and playwright, reading from the pulpit of St. Francis' Church on Liberty Street in Cork. Joseph Tomelty (1911-1995) was a cultural tour de force from the North of Ireland known for his work on radio as well as the stage. His was a familiar face on the screen, with his distinctive white-haired, bushy-browed features. Born in County Down, on the east coast of Ulster, he was based in Northern Ireland where he made a significant contribution to its cultural history. He was instrumental in founding and managing the Group Theatre in Belfast in 1940 where his plays would be staged (apart from the controversial 1944 play The End House, which was premiered at the Abbey Theatre because the Northern theatres wouldn't show it). He wrote comedy dramas for the BBC, in particular The McCooeys which lasted seven years. He also worked in Hollywood but it was for his enduring committment to the North of Ireland that he is fondly remembered. In this image Tomelty is standing at the altar of the Byzantine-styled red-brick Church and Friary of St Francis. Behind him we can make out the elaborate decorated mosaic tiles of the apse behind the altar and beside him four priests stand with hands folded in prayer. St Francis Church was founded on Liberty Street in the mid-nineteenth century before being rebuilt in July 1953. It is tucked behind the Cork City Courthouse and partially stands on the site of old Broad Lane Church. Its city location and spacious interior made it an ideal location for the crowds that attended the annual Cork Film Festival St Finbarr Mass. A bespectacled Poole, standing on the far left, is smiling broadly at the camera next to a dashing colleague (who might be Mrs Poole?) who is also smiling broadly whilst holding up her glass. To the right Dermot Breen gazes off to the distance. Frank Poole was a managing director of Rank Film Productions, London during the 1960s until his retirement in the late 1970s. The Rank Organisation was a British film company whose contract players made regular appearances at the Cork Film Festival during the 1950s in particular. Films made by the Rank organisation during his era were dominated by the 'Carry On' film series as well as big-budget movies; investment steadily declined in the 1980s however before losses in the 1990s led to the eventual demise of what was once a powerful player in the film industry. He is wearing a dark suit and his trademark trilby hat walking along the street, accompanied by a uniformed officer in a tailored tunic and Sam Browne belt. In the distance, just before MacCurtain street meets St Patrick's Hill, we see the Army band. Patrick Hillery (1923-2008) was a Fianna Fáil politician who served as the sixth President of Ireland from 1976 to 1990 following some time as Ireland's first European commissioner from 1973 to 1976. In this picture Hillery is seen walking past the distinctive façade of the Cork Baptist Church which was established in King Street (now MacCurtain Street) in 1892. Its red-brick façade, with its unusual tower and carving over the door entrance, is a distinctive landmark on MacCurtain Street. On its right, and just out of shot, we note the unique red-break façade of Victoria Buildings which were designed by the Cork-born architect Arthur Hill (1846-1921). They are outdoors, possibly on a boat, standing side-by-side wearing heavy coats. Both are looking directly at the camera; Guinness is wearing a dark-coloured coat and a flat hat with his hands folded in front of him carrying a pair of light-coloured gloves. Breen, in a tweed coat, has his hands in his pockets. In the distance we see the silhouette of tall chimney stacks on the horizon. Sir Alec Guinness (1914-2000) featured in many Ealing Comedies including Kind Heart and Coronets (Robert Hamer, 1949) where he played nine characters. His collaborations with the film director David Lean include Fagin in Oliver Twist (1948) and opposite William Holden in The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. He has made many television appearances including the role of George Smiley in the serialisation of two novels by John le Carré, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) and Smiley's People (1982). Most notably he is remembered for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in George Lucas' original Star Wars Trilogy for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Title A name given to the resource Iranian film producer Vasgen Badal and Norma Crosbie Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Vasgen Badal, Norma Crosbie Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the film producter Vasgen Badal and Norma Crosbie greeting each other. Both are in formal wear and Badal looks on, vaguely distracted, while Norma Crosbie, dressed in a white lace dress, leans in to kiss him. The photo is dated 1958 and we note from the 1959 Festival of Cork Programme that Badal was presented with a statuette of St. Finbarr that year by Jack Lynch, TD, for the documentary Dreamroad of the World (Hans Domnick, 1958). Badal was an Iranian-born film producer and distributor who moved to Germany as a young man where he learnt about film and set up the film company 'Badal-Filmproduktion.' He produced a number of films in the thirties and forties including a Nazi propaganda film Roter Nebel (UA, 1941) which was released after the German attack on the USSR in June 1941. Vasgen Badal died in 1959 - a year after this photo was taken. As so little is known about him we are fortunate to have images of him in the archive. Both are dressed in formal evening wear, Breen in a dark suit and the lady in a three-quarter length dress accessorised with a fur stole and white gloves. She is carrying a bouquet of flowers in her left hand and is looking directly at the camera. An usher escorts them while all around a crowd jostles to view the passing entourage. Some of the images of the crowd are blurred but we can sense the hustle and bustle of the event. Above the passing cinema-goers, we can read posters advertising two personal appearances that evening: Personal appearance: Lea Massari and Tonight at 8pm: Fiorella Mari. Both Massari and Mari were Italian actors and from this, we might guess that this fair-haired woman in this picture is Forella Mari. Born in Brazil, Mari moved to Rome in the 1950s and is best known for her roles in Are We Men or Corporals? (Camillo Mastrocinque, 1955) and Fathers and Sons (Padri e figli) (1957) by Mario Monicelli, which was shown at the Cork Film Festival that year.
