The convivial group are shown in a huddle speaking, with Kelly, cigarette in hand, looking over to Morton as she speaks. We have a few pictures of David Kelly in the archive but this is the only one that identifies his wife the actor Laurie Morton. Like Kelly she too worked on the television series Strumpet City (1980), as well as Snakes and Ladders (Trish McAdam,1996) and the Irish comedy film Adam & Paul (2004) directed by Lenny Abrahamson and starring Tom Murphy and Mark O’Halloran. Their daughter Miriam Kelly is also an actor and voiceover artist who has worked with The Abbey Theatre and The Royal Shakespeare Company. Donovan, holding a festival brochure dated 1972, is smiling broadly as he reaches out to shake Audley’s hand. Donovan (1926-2008) was a founding member of Cork’s Everyman Theatre and Cork’s cultural legacy owes much to his passion and love of the arts. He was a board director of the Cork Choral Festival as well as the Cork Film Festival. Donovan was also an actor and a beloved teacher at the Presentation Brothers College in Cork, where he taught for almost 40 years, and whose theatre is named after him. In 2008 the Everyman, in association with Collins Press, published Dan Donovan: An Everyman’s Life to mark his 80th birthday. He died, age 92, in 2008. At the time of this picture, in 1972, Maxine Audley (1923-1992) had just completed her final film role in Running Scared (David Hemmings, 1972). Running Scared was directed and co-written by David Hemmings who also came to the Cork Film Festival during the seventies. Audley was an English stage and film actor who consistently worked in theatre to high acclaim. She toured with the Old Vic and worked in the West End and Stratford with John Gielgud, Kenneth Tynan, and Peter Brook. Audley also worked in television, radio and over 20 films, including Charlie Chaplin’s satirical comedy A King in New York (1957), which also starred the English actor Dawn Addams who came to the Cork festival in its early days. The three panellists, sitting at a table in front of long-armed microphones, include the English writer James Mitchell, the Irish actor Joe Tomelty, and the English screenwriter Michael Pertwee. Joseph Tomelty, sitting at the centre, was an Irish character actor, novelist and playwright known for his radio and stage work. He was a frequent visitor to the Cork festival, as far back as 1960, when that years programme noted that Tomelty presented awards to recipients in the presence of the then Lord Mayor of Cork Stephen Barrett. Tomelty was born in County Down, and was based in Northern Ireland where he made a significant contribution to its cultural history. Tomelty was instrumental in founding and managing the Group Theatre in Belfast in 1940 where his plays would be staged - apart from the controversial The End House (1944) which was premiered at the Abbey Theatre because Northern theatres wouldn't show it at the time. He wrote comedy dramas for the BBC, in particular The McCooeys which lasted seven years. Tomelty’s film work includes Odd Man Out (Carol Reed, 1947), and Moby Dick (John Huston, 1956) with Gregory Peck and the Irish actor Noel Purcell, but it was for his enduring commitment to the North of Ireland that he is fondly remembered.   Michael Pertwee, sitting on the far right of the photo, was an English playwright and screenwriter born in 1916. He comes from a prolific family of actors including his father, the actor and playwright Roland Pertwee, his brother the actor Jon Pertwee, best known for his Dr.Who, and his nephew the actor Sean Pertwee. As well as TV work, Michael Pertwee’s screenwriting credits include Richard Lester’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966) and One More Time (Jerry Lewis, 1970) starring Sammy Davis Jr. At the time of this photo he had just finished Digby, the Biggest Dog in the World (Joseph McGrath, 1973) with Spike Milligan and the Irish actor Milo O’Shea. The photo also identifies the writer James Mitchell on the far left, cigarette in hand raised towards his mouth. Born in the North of England, Mitchell (1926-2002) was a prolific writer writing under his own name and the pen-names James Munro and Patrick O McGuire. Mitchell wrote over 70 novels, mostly crime fiction and spy thrillers, and 100 television scripts. He will be remembered best for the successful television series Callan (Thames Television) and When the Boat Comes In (BBC) which ran between 1976 and 1981. Around the time of this photo, dated 1972, Mitchell had just completed Callan (1969-1972) starring Edward Woodward as the secret agent and hitman David Callan. The series went on to spawn novels, short stories, the film Callan (Don Sharp, 1974), and a TV movie Wet Job (1981) directed by Shaun O’Riordan. Interestingly, the full name of O’Riordan, who was born in Sri Lanka in 1927, is Shaun Stuart Harry Daniel O’Connell O’Riordan. O'Riordan also starred in the long-running popular British television sitcom The Larkins (1958-1964), playing the part of Eddie Larkin alongside the actors Margaret Rose Mount and David Kossoff, both of whom came to the Cork festival during the 1960s. In 1974 Mitchell served on the Shorts Jury for the Short Film Competition alongside Bernard Blin (France), Bill Starr (USA), Kevin Marron (Ireland), and Noel Ryan (Ireland). Wearing a long patterned dress accessorised with an elaborate necklace, Cleveland is turned towards the compere smiling. Cleveland is best known to us for her work with the Monty Python troupe. She was the only woman associated with the show and would appear in thirty of the forty-five Monty Python episodes as well as the Monty Python films Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones 1975), Monty Python's Life of Brian (Terry Jones, 1979) and Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (Terry Jones, 1983). Terry Gilliam was also a visitor to the Cork Film Festival during the seventies. In 2014 Cleveland featured in the Monty Python Live (Mostly) show in the O2 London; it was their first live performance together in 16 years, without Graham Chapman who died in 1989, and the last with Terry Jones who died in 2020. They are probably at the Harp Lager-sponsored festival club and, as with the convivial crowd around them, they drink and chat, cigarette in hand. Helen Shapiro, in a white blouse and embroidered top accessorised with a festival ribbon, was a singing sensation in her day. Born in East London in 1946, she was a British singer whose repertoire included the blues, jazz, gospel and pop music. By the age of 15 she was England’s top recording star with You Don’t Know and Walking Back to Happiness earning her two gold discs. She toured and performed with the Beatles; John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song Misery for her but her then-management refused to let her record it. Shapiro’s film career was brief and she played herself in Play It Cool (Michael Winner,1962) and the lead female role in Its Trad, Dad! directed by Richard Lester (1962) who went on to direct the Beatles’ film Hard Day’s Night (1964). Her stage career includes the West End play Oliver by Lionel Bart and the part of Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Later she toured with the British jazz trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton and his band between 1984 and 2001, as well as touring with her one-woman show Simply Shapiro. Shapiro published her autobiography Walking Back to Happiness in 1993. Ferdy Mayne, on the right, cigar in hand, faces Breen as they chat. A festival ribbon is pinned to the left lapel of his jacket. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career and achieved international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including head vampire in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate; Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968); and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams (who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo). Mayne later featured in Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with Hannelore Elsner, who also came to Cork around the same time as this photo. (While this photo is marked 1970 it is possibly 1972 based on other items in the archive.) His final film role was as General Karl von Weber in the neo-Nazi political thriller The Killers Within (Paul Leder, 1995) before he returned to England, where he died in 1998 following the onset of Parkinson’s Disease. Small tables at the front of the stage display four glass whiskey decanters and the Waterford Crystal trophy. The guests are not identified but we recognise the Lord Mayor, Timothy J O’Sullivan, which helps us date this photo to his mayoralty in 1971. O’Sullivan is seated alongside festival director Dermot Breen on his left and committee member Gus Healy on his right. Healy was Lord Mayor of Cork from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. Between them they are holding a St Finbarr statuette. We recognise the trellis in the background from other archive images which suggests that the picture was taken at the festival club, which was sponsored by Harp Lager. From a similar archive image in the archive, we can also date this image to 1972 from the inscription on the base of the award. Title A name given to the resource Bunny Carr and Michael Twomey Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Bunny Carr, Michael Twomey Description An account of the resource This black and white photo shows the television personality Bunny Carr on the stage with the Irish actor Michael Twomey. Both men, dressed in evening wear, are standing on a stage in front of microphones. Twomey, notes in hand, is smiling broadly as he looks towards Carr who has caught the light of the camera. Bernard 'Bunny' Carr (1927-2018) was a popular RTÉ television presenter during the 1960s and 1970s. He acted as a Chairman on some of the festival workshops such as the Writers Forum. The 1973 festival programme notes that he chaired a forum on the 'writer’s contribution to the cinema' that year on June 13th. Speakers at that forum included Robert Bolt, Wolf Mankowitz, Father Cyril Farrell and Joan Long.
