Tilson, wearing a long light-coloured evening dress and sash marked Movie Girl ’75, is presenting an award made from Waterford Glass to Marcus. Born in Cork City, Marcus began his career in Dublin as assistant director on Mise Éire (George Morrison, 1959) and Saoirse? (George Morrison, 1965). His first documentary film The Silent Art (1958), on the Cork-born sculptor Séamus Murphy (1907-1975) was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1959, with music by Bernard Geary and Declan Townsend and commentary by festival stalwart Dan Donovan. Marcus was later nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1974 for Children at Work (Páisti ag Obair), and in 1976 he was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 48th Academy Awards for Conquest of Light (1976) which detailed how Waterford Glass is made with an emphasis on the aesthetic nature of the process. Mary Tilson, in a dark-coloured top and Movie Girl sash, was Miss Movie Girl in 1975. Miss Movie Girl was a ‘Rose of Tralee’ type contest that ran for a few brief years in the seventies. Run in conjunction with the Sunday World tabloid, it was a contest of county representatives vying for the ultimate title of 'Miss Movie Girl’. It was an enticing affair, the winner would meet with celebrities, be showered with prizes and go on to promote the festival throughout Ireland. In this picture Tilson is talking to the artist and journalist Frank Sanquest. Sanquest was a Cork-born artist who specialised in portraiture and landscapes. He was a past president of the Munster Fine Art Society and for many years was resident set designer for the Cork Opera House until it burnt down in 1954. Sanquest was on the board of the Southern Theatre Group with Dan Donovan and James N. Healy which toured with John B Keane plays often with the Cork actor Michael Twomey. From 1940 to 1987 he also worked as the Arts Editor for The Cork Examiner, in whose capacity he might have been attending the Film Festival press briefings. He died in 2008, age 95. Byrne is standing next to Peters who is sitting on a beer key, wearing a white fur jacket over a dark dress, and drinking a pint of Guinness. On her right O’Shaughnessy, in a long white dress, poses decorously holding onto the large promotional umbrella. Grace O’Shaughnessy was a top Irish model in the 1960s based in Dublin. In 1966, when working in the Lebanon as a secretary, she was named as the ‘Ideal Woman of Europe’ in an Italian competition. She worked with the fashion designers Sybil Connolly, Ib Jorgensen and Nellie Mulcahy. She returned to Ireland and set up a modelling agency, as well as working as a fashion TV presenter for RTÉ during the 1970s and 1980s. She has been an ambassador for Women’s Aid, and for Third Age which is dedicated to the well-being of older people. Her companion in this picture is Mollie (sometimes known as Molly) Peters born in 1939. Peters was the stage name of Vivien Humphrey, who grew up in Suffolk, England. She started out as a model for men’s magazines but achieved cult cinema status for appearing as the sensuous Nurse Fearing, opposite Sean Connery's 007, in the first Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965). Despite her fame with being the first Bond girl to take her clothes off on-screen she had a short-lived film career, due mainly to contractual disagreements with her agent which forestalled her career and she had mostly given up acting by the time of this photo.
