Wearing a tweed coat and a white hat, Neagle is chatting with two young children who are on the hospital bed. The little girl, with a large ribbon tied into her hair, is reaching out to the gloved hand of Neagle while the young boy, wearing a striped jumper, looks on. In Neagle's left hand she is carrying a rattan woven basket of light-coloured flowers. Neagle was a popular actor during the 1930s-1950s. She was best known for her many historical characters including Nell Gwyn in Nell Gwyn (Herbert Wilcox, 1934) and Let's Make Up (Herbert Wilcox, 1954). She is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records for her 2,062 consecutive performances in the stage play Charlie Girl which ran from 1965 to 1971. Neagle was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1952 for her services to drama so would have been Lady Anna Neagle during her visit to Cork. Maureen Swanson (1932-2011) was a Scottish actor who featured in cinema as a contract player for the Rank Organisation, for a brief period during the 1950s before she retired from acting on marriage to Viscount Ednam and becoming Lady Dudley. She has an extensive filmography for this period including Moulin Rouge (John Huston, 1952), A Town like Alice (Jack Lee, 1956) and The Spanish Gardener (Philip Leacock, 1956) opposite Dirk Bogarde. Swanson was involved in two libel cases following her relationship with the osteopath and artist, Stephen Ward (1912-1963), who would be a key player in the 1963 Profumo affair. Purcell, in a dark suit, is looking directly at the camera while Griffin is laughing while being carried in his arms. She is wearing a light-coloured suit accessorised with a white handbag. Behind them, two young women are seen peeking out from the arched doorway up towards the camera. Noel Purcell (1900-1985) was a regular visitor to the festival in its early days. An Irish actor of stage, screen, and television, he has an extensive filmography and many bit-parts in movies including Moby Dick (John Huston, 1956), Munity on the Bounty (Lewis Milestone, 1962), and The Macintosh Man (John Huston, 1973). Purcell was also well known on the stage and television and would appear on This is Your Life, hosted by Eamon Andrews, in 1958.
