Mollie (sometimes spelled 'Molly') Peters was the stage name of Vivien Mollie Rudderham, an English actor best known for her role as Nurse Patricia Fearing, opposite Sean Connery's 007 in Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965). She was famously the first Bond girl to take off her clothes on-screen, earning the franchise its first X-rating. Several scenes were cut at the request of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) for their risqué nature. Despite the success of Thunderball, Peters went on to have a short-lived film career, mainly due to contractual disagreements with her agent that forestalled her career. We recognise some of the group to include festival committee members Dermot Breen and Gus Healy. We also identify the mustachioed British actor Simon Williams, and Jean Alexandria, who was a well-known British television actor during the 1970s. The Irish comedian and actor Niall Tóibín is noted in the middle of the group. Tóibín was born in Cork in 1929, on the northside of the City. He would go on to have an illustrious stage and film career including parts in Ryan’s Daughter (David Lean, 1970), Far And Away (Ron Howard, 1992), and Veronica Guerin (Joel Schumacher, 2003). Purcell, with his trademark beard, and hands clasped before him, is looking at the microphone as if in conversation or mid-speech. Breen is looking up at Purcell on the right. Purcell was a regular visitor to the festival and there are many images of him in the archive. He was born in Dublin in 1900 and started out as a schoolboy working at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin. Well known for his stagecraft Purcell would later appear in the first sound film version of The Blue Lagoon (Frank Launder, 1949), and has a large filmography including parts in Moby Dick (John Huston, 1956), Mutiny on the Bounty (Lewis Milestone, 1962), and The Mackintosh Man (1973) directed by John Huston. He was married to Eileen Marmion who was also a stage performer who performed all over Ireland and the UK. Noel Purcell died in 1985, age 85, and his wife Marmion died, age 100, in 2018. Purcell and Locke, in formal suits, accessorised with a festival ribbon, are huddled together in conversation with Purcell gesticulating with his hand outstretched towards Dignam who looks on, glass in hand. Noel Purcell (1900-1985) had a distinguished career on stage and in film. However he did gain some recognition as a singer for his rendition of The Dublin Saunter, a song composed for him by the songwriter Leo Maguire (1903-1985). Purcell was given the Freedom of the City of Dublin in June 1984, a short time before his death in 1985. Derry-born Joseph McLaughlin, known professionally as Josef Locke, was born in 1917 and was particularly successful for his singing during the 1940s and 1950s. He worked as an Irish Guard and served abroad with the Palestine Police Force, before returning to Ireland to work for the Royal Ulster Constabulary in the late 1930s. He appeared in a small number of films, as himself, including Holidays with Pay (John E Blakeley, 1948) and What a Carry On! (John E Blakeley, 1949). However it is for his singing he is best remembered – in particular for his recordings of Blaze Away, The Town I Loved So Well, and Hear My Song. He had somewhat protracted legal wranglings with the British tax-man over the years – and would successfully appeal various court sentences and demands. In later years Locke was honoured with recognition from the Variety Artists Trust, The Late Late Show, and an award-winning film based on his life, Hear My Song (Peter Chelsom) in 1991, a few years before his death in 1999. Title A name given to the resource Noel Purcell with Roy Hammond and others Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Noel Purcell, Roy Hammond, Stephen Coughlan Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo, dated 1966, of the Irish actor Noel Purcell having his beard pulled by a congenial group of colleagues. Purcell, at the centre, is leaning forward, with a mock-startled look on his face, while his greying beard is being tweaked. The photo notes two names at the back of the photo - that of  Roy Hammond and Stephen Coughlan. We recognise the work of Roy Hammond throughout this archive as his studio stamp graces the back of many photos. He was a photojournalist for the Cork Examiner and before that the Irish Press. Originally from England Hammond moved to Cork after meeting, and marrying, his wife Rose Sheppard from Albert Road, Cork City, setting up a photography studio at 33 St Patrick’s Street. Hammond was an army photographer during World War II and would later work for the Imperial War Crimes Commission in Berlin. As well as his work as a press photographer for the Cork Examiner Hammond was a cameraman for RTÉ until his retirement in 1992. On his death in 1996 the Examiner obituary noted: "Roy covered all the major stories, both in Cork and nationally, he covered nearly every major story you could think of, he was a great newsman and a thorough gentleman." (Mark Wilkins, The Archive, issue 16, 2012.) The competition had various rounds including ‘evening attire’ and swimwear. We note the Harp Lager promotional material providing a backdrop for an improvised runway in what looks like a hotel function room. The fair-haired model, wearing a light-coloured chaste bathing suit worn over nylon tights, is gazing straight down towards the lens of the cameraman on her right. A crowd is gathered around the runway, some with bags in hand, and look on. While the idea of a Miss Movie Girl competition with a ‘bathing suit’ segment might bring a wry smile to our lips now it was very much in vogue during the 1970s, as we see with the Miss World pageant. Miss World originated in 1951, for the Festival of Britain, under the auspices of Eric and Julia Morley. During the 1960s and 1970s the pageant was one of the most-watched programmes on British television but fell out of favour as the decade progressed. Miss World still operates today, without that swimsuit segment, but is no longer televised in England or Ireland. A recent movie Misbehaviour (2020), directed by Philippa Lowthorpe, looks at the bizarre and somewhat extraordinary nature of the Miss World pageant in a light-hearted yet illuminating way – reminding us of how the women’s liberation movement of the 1970s made way for a narrative that continues to this day via #MeToo.
