The Fine Gael politician Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, and judge who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972-1973. He studied at the University College Cork (UCC) before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. The all-male symphony orchestra is not identified but we note that they are all standing, as is the audience, and they might be playing the National Anthem at the end of the concert. The photo notes that this photo was taken during the ‘Tóstal era’ so we might date it to the mid-fifties when Tóstal was inaugurated in Cork in 1953. Tóstal was a festival held around Ireland to celebrate Ireland’s national image and lift the country from a period of economic depression. Music was very much a part of this rebranding with the establishment of the Cork Choral Festival in 1954 spearheaded by Aloys Fleischmann (1910-1992) who founded the Cork Symphony Orchestra in 1934. Fleischmann was a member of the Cork Tóstal Council from 1952 to 1954, and would go on to be the director of the Cork International Choral Festival from 1967 to 1987. The photo is undated but we can suggest the mid-fifties when Tóstal was inaugurated in Cork. The Cork Film Festival emerged from An Tóstal (1953-1958), which was a pageant, or festival, held around Ireland to celebrate Ireland’s national image. While this photo does not identify the ten council members we do recognise some of their faces from the archive. A young Dermot Breen stands in the middle at the back – he went on to found the film festival in 1956 and would run it until his death in 1978. Gus Healy (1904-1987) stands on the far left, hands in pocket. He was a Fianna Fáil politician who would later serve Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. A grey-haired Patrick ‘Pa’ McGrath stands at the centre of the group. He was a Fianna Fáil politician who represented Cork in Dáil Éireann between 1946 and 1956. McGrath served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1952 to 1956. He took an active part in the Irish War of Independence and was honoured by his comrades by appointing him chairman of the Cork City Old IRA Men’s Association. McGrath died suddenly in 1956 and was honoured by Taoiseach John A Costello in the Dáil, who spoke highly of him in the Dáil Éireann debate that June. In this picture Preminger, in a dark suit and bow-tie, is turned towards Addams with his left arm around her shoulders. Wearing a satin evening gown, Addams is smiling up at Preminger as she rests her white-gloved hand on his chest. Dawn Addams (1930-1985) was an English actor whose work in Hollywood coincided with the early years of the Cork Film Festival. Born Victoria Dawn Addams in England she spent her early life in Calcutta, India, after her Cork-born mother, Ethel Mary (née Hickie) passed away when she was a child. Her beauty and talent brought her to the attention of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios to whom she signed a seven-year contract in 1950. For the next two decades she worked incessantly in film and television including the MGM films Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly 1952), and the then-controversial The Moon is Blue (1953) which was directed by Otto Preminger. Otto Preminger (1905-1986) was born in Austria-Hungary but fled to Austria with his family after the breakout of the first World War. He went on to work for Fox in Los Angeles and was known for defying the censorship code of Hollywood with his controversial films. He directed Dawn Addams in the American romantic comedy The Moon is Blue (1953) which was nominated for three Oscars. It incurred the wrath of the American censors for its 'light and gay treatment of the subject of illicit sex and seduction'. Preminger and United Artists contested the State Censor Board who were overturned in court and the success of the film was instrumental in diminishing the power of the Hollywood Production Code. In this picture Preminger, in a dark suit and bow-tie, is walking purposefully towards the cinema accompanied by two others. A small crowd gathers around Preminger and entourage, and a young girl is caught at the kerb-side looking back over her left shoulder towards the camera. She is wearing a light-coloured dress and a dark jacket, her short hair tousled by the wind. Further behind Preminger, we can see a slice of life on the main thoroughfare that is Patrick Street. Directly behind him, in the distance on Winthrop Street, we can just about make out the crowds gathered outside the now shut Lee Cinema next door to the limestone façade of the Cash & Co. department store (now Brown Thomas). The Lee Cinema was closed in December 1920 after the 'Burning of Cork' and reopened in September 1921, finally shutting down in April 1989. Beyond the crowds, we can glimpse the Cork General Post Office at the junction of Winthrop Street and Oliver Plunkett Street. Winthrop Street was pedestrianised in the 1970s but in this picture we see how Patrick Street follows down Winthrop Street, passing the Lee Cinema which was so close to the Savoy Cinema. Marked 1962 the photo identifies four of the revellers to be the actor Ronnie Shiner, the local businessman Donal Crosbie, Norma Crosbie and Edmond Purdom, an English actor, voice artist, and director. The room is packed with a well-dressed crowd in the midst of a sing-song and includes, at the back of the room by the wooden door, three uniformed Gardaí. At the centre of the photo, we can make out the distinctive profile of the British actor Ronald Shiner with his arms raised. Known as ‘Ronnie’, Shiner (1903-1966) was a British stand-up comedian and comedy actor who worked on stage, television and film. A career highlight included the stage version of Worm’s Eye View (1945 to 1947) followed by a film version in 1952 with Diana Dors. In 1962, around the time this photo was taken, he had made a TV version of Worm’s Eye View for the BBC. Shiner was the subject of This is Your Life in 1958 when he was surprised by Eamon Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre. Based on photographs in Roy Hammond's own book, Media Memories of Cork (1994), we have reason to that one of the obscured figures is that of Mexican actress Linda Christian. Purdom and Christian were married to each other for the short period of 1962-1963 and so they would have been a couple at the time of this visit to Cork. The party is taking place in the MacCurtain Street Garda Station which was located at 58 MacCurtain Street. It was originally a house built c.1830 before its use as a Garda station and constabulary barracks. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage describes it as a terraced three-bay four-storey former house, over basement, as a pair with the adjoining former house to the west. A flight of limestone steps, framed by cast-iron railings, lead to a round-headed door opening. The station was closed in 2013, as part of a programme of Garda station closures around Ireland. The group of seven, dressed in travel attire, pose genially for the camera in front of the Dublin-Cork train at Kent Station on the Lower Glanmire Road in Cork. Paul Rotha (1907-1984), wearing a beret, is holding a pipe in his right hand and is looking directly at the camera. He was a member of the first festival jury in 1956. In 1961, his film Das Leben Von Adolf Hitler (The Life of Adolf Hitler) was shown at the Savoy during that year's film festival. Title A name given to the resource Peter Gilmore from The Onedin Line Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Peter Gilmore, The Onedin Line Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the German-born English actor Peter Gilmore on stage with an unidentified companion. Gilmore, in a long-line velvet jacket, and his colleague, in a white frill-trimmed dress, are holding microphones and appear to be singing. Peter Gilmore (1931-2013) is best known for his role as James Onedin in the long-running BBC series The Onedin Line which ran from 1971 to 1980. The Onedin Line was based in late 19th-century Liverpool and told the story of the rise of a shipping company and the trials and tribulations that beset the Onedin family along the way. His filmography includes 11 appearances in the Carry On film franchise including its final release Carry On Columbus (Gerald Thomas) in 1992. Title A name given to the resource Peter O'Toole with Dermot Breen and Leslie Mallory Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Peter O'Toole, Dermot Breen, Leslie Mallory Description An account of the resource This is a sepia-toned photograph, dated 1963, of the actor Peter O’Toole walking with the festival director Dermot Breen and the journalist Leslie Mallory. All three are shown smiling whilst in conversation. A dapper-looking O’Toole, in glasses on the far right of the photo, is looking towards Breen and Mallory with a broad grin. Mallory on the far left, in sunglasses and hand in pocket, walks alongside Breen who is smiling as he steps forward. We might guess that Mallory and Breen are meeting O’Toole on the tarmacadam of Cork Airport which had recently opened in 1961. Leslie Mallory was an RTÉ news reporter who died in 2006, age 81. He worked in RTÉ radio and television news for most of his career. He also dabbled in film production and wrote a script of a feature film at the behest of Peter Sellers. He moved back to Ireland from London in the 1970s and was a senior foreign editor by the time of his retirement. By all accounts he was a beloved colleague. (Dermot Mullane, Sunday Independent, 26.03.2006.) Peter O’Toole (1932-2013) was a British actor of Irish descent. He was either born in Connemara, Co. Galway or Leeds in England depending on his telling. A stage and film actor of Irish descent he was a Shakespearean actor with the Bristol Old Vic with whom he played many parts including Hamlet (1958, 1963) and Waiting for Godot (1958), which he reprised at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1969. His love for the theatre was such that he would turn down film roles stating that “You’ve got to go to Stratford when you get the chance.” (Stephen Watts, New York Times, 05.02.1961.) O'Toole achieved international recognition for his part as TE Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean, 1962) which was released a year before this photo was taken. He holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations for acting without receiving a win including aforementioned Lawrence of Arabia, The Lion In Winter (Anthony Harvey, 1968), Mr Chips (Herbert Ross, 1969), and the British comedy-drama Venus (Roger Mitchell, 2002) written by Hanif Kureishi. He did however receive an honorary Academy Award in 2003 which might have assuaged his missing out on earlier nominations. O'Toole died in London, age 81, and his ashes taken to the West of Ireland. He was a friend of the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, who spent time with him in Galway over the years, and who speaks fondly of him: “He was unsurpassed for the grace he brought to every performance on and off the stage.” (www.thejournal.ie, 15.12.2013.)
