The pews are full and those without seats stand up against the church walls. We notice the Lord Mayor Seán O’Leary kneeling at the outside edge of the front pew, folded hands resting under his chin. Across the aisle the former Lord Mayor of Cork, Gus Healy, kneels next to the festival director Dermot Breen, and his wife Vida who wears a white lace veil. Along the church pew the congregation kneel in prayer, some holding rosary beads. The presence of Lord Mayor Seán O’Leary helps us date this photo to 1972 or 1973. The photo is undated but it was probably taken in 1971 during the recording of St Patrick’s Mass which was televised live from the Franciscan Church in Cork that year. Also in the picture is the Scottish tenor Canon Sydney MacEwan who featured in the recording with the choir of Trinity College Dublin - Trinity Chorale.  Born in East London in 1911 Philip Green had an extensive career in film-music composition. He was appointed the musical director for the Rank Organisation, whose many stars came to visit the festival in its earlier years, and composed hundreds of film scores and themes for popular television programmes during his career. However his conversion to Catholicism in the early 1970s contributed to his creation of this Mass, which he composed, produced, and recorded in 1970 before bringing it to Cork in 1971. Seemingly the Mass was a personal tribute of thanksgiving to both the Church and Ireland. He died in 1982 but his recording of St Patrick’s Mass, performed by Canon Sydney MacEwan and Trinity Chorale, is still available and can be streamed on-line. Canon MacEwan (1908-1991) sang traditional Scottish and Irish songs and during the 1940s-50s he toured North America, Australia, and New Zealand, trying to raise funds for the restoration of parish buildings. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music before becoming a priest and used the funds he made for his music to fund his religious work. MacEwan recorded almost 40 records before his death in 1991 and in Ireland we might know him best for his rendition of Queen of the May and Bring Flowers of the Rarest played over our radios every year on 1st of May. In 1962 Eamon Andrews featured him on the BBC show This is Your Life. The girls, in matching red frocks accessorised with a white headband, line up with the boys, in their black trousers and white shirts, across the chancel of the altar. The back of the photo notes that the children sitting on the chairs at the front of the choir are the young Donal Lehane and Grainne Breen – the daughter of the festival founder Dermot Breen and his wife Vida. This image is one of the few colour photographs in the archive and provides us with a beautiful rendition of the notable mosaic interior of the church. The mosaics were designed by the Italian artist Umberto Noni who counted his work at this church as one of his most accomplished creations. The undated photo notes that the association of London friends was founded by Bernard McDonagh, a committee member of the London Film Society. Born in 1934, Sylvia Syms has a prolific film and television career. Her second film My Teenage Daughter (Herbert Wilcox, 1956) also starred Anna Neagle who was a visitor to the festival when My Teenage Daughter opened at the Savoy in 1956. Her films include Brendan Behan’s The Quare Fellow (Arthur Dreifuss, 1962), The Tamarind Seed (Blake Edwards, 1974) with Julie Andrews and Omar Sharif, Absolute Beginners (Julien Temple, 1986) with David Bowie and Patsy Kensit, and as the Queen Mother in The Queen (Stephen Frears, 2006) with Helen Mirren. Her television work includes Thatcher: The Final Days (Granada Television, 1991) where she starred as Margaret Thatcher. Her daughter Beatrice Edney (1962-) is also an English actor with many film and television appearances including Highlander (1986, 2000), Inspector Morse (1989), Lewis (2013), and Poldark (2015-2019). Hemmings (1941-2003) was an English actor and director, who achieved international fame as a sixties icon following his memorable role, as a London fashion photographer, in Blow-Up (1966), by the Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni, and starring Vanessa Redgrave and Sarah Miles. He later played the leading man, opposite Jane Fonda, in Roger Vadim’s fantasy Barbarella (1970). However, his turbulent colourful personal life was also of great interest to the media. Hemmings was married four times and divorced from his second wife, the American actor Gayle Hunnicutt, following an affair with his then-personal assistant Baroness Prudence de Casembroot. Koval, in the middle with a bow-tie and glass in hand, appears to be in mid-conversation, as his colleagues look towards the camera. The photo was taken at the Martini Terrace in London at a reception hosted by the London Friends of Cork. The terrace is located on the top floor of the 18-storey New Zealand House at the corner of Haymarket and Pall Mall. Behind our guests in this picture we can just make out the potential panoramic view over Trafalgar Square and beyond. Koval was a journalist and respected film critic who had a positive impact on the public representation of the Cork Film Festival during the 1960s. He attended international film festivals, including Cannes, Berlin, Locarno, and Cork, and wrote festival reviews for publications from Germany, France, Switzerland and America. Koval always presented Cork in a most congenial fashion and was an important friend of the festival until his death in 1970. The drinks reception was held at the Martini Terrace, an iconic landmark that sits on the top of the 18-storey New Zealand House in London. New Zealand House, built in 1959, is a controversial building being the only skyscraper in this part of London near Trafalgar Square. The terrace was used for receptions and launches and has a view over Trafalgar Square and beyond. In 1992 it was listed Grade II, cementing its place in the architectural history of London. Fraser, wearing a light-coloured evening coat with fur-trimmed lapels,  smiles broadly at the camera while pointing to the view over Trafalgar Square and beyond. Born Elizabeth Winch (1930-2018), and known professionally as Liz Fraser, she was well-known for her comedy film roles and extensive television appearances. Fraser worked with Peter Sellers in a number of films including The Smallest Show on Earth (Basil Dearden, 1957), I’m All Right Jack (John Boulting, 1959), and Two-Way Stretch (Robert Day, 1960). However she will be remembered for her typecast appearances, as a blonde bombshell, in the Carry On series of films including Carry On Regardless (Gerald Thomas, 1961), Carry On Cabby (Gerald Thomas, 1963) and Carry On Behind (Gerald Thomas, 1975) which was made around the time this picture was taken. Fraser also appeared in films by the Irish director Norman Cohen including Dad’s Army (1971) and Confessions of a Driving Instructor (1976) starring Lynda Bellingham who also came to the festival. Fraser worked up until her death in 2018, age 88, in a year that saw her appear in the latest series of Midsomer Murders (2018) as well as an appearance at the Museum of Comedy in conversation with the British comedy historian Robert Ross. The only guest identified at the back of this undated photo is the singer and dancer Margaret Savage, on the far left, wearing a fur hat accessorised with a fur scarf. She smiles broadly at the camera, arms folded, while her companions chat to each other. Savage was a singer and dancer who worked on The Black and White Minstrel Show with the choreographer Roy Gunson who also attended the London event. The man on the far right, holding liqueur glasses to be refilled, and chatting with an unidentified companion, might be Richard ‘Dick’ Beamish from Cork. The reception, hosted by the London Friends of the Festival, was held at the Martini International Club whose logo is printed on the front of this promotional photograph. The Martini Terrace, built in 1959, is an iconic landmark that sits on the top floor of the 18-storey New Zealand House in London. The skyscraper is located at the corner of Haymarket and Pall Mall with a view, that we can just about glimpse, towards Trafalgar Square and beyond.
