In this picture Green is conducting his composition St Patrick’s Mass, which was televised live from the Franciscan Church in Cork for the opening of the 1971 Cork Film Festival. He is shown in profile, leaning over the music lectern, arms slightly raised as he concentrates on reading the score, whilst conducting under the bright glare of a stage light. Philip Green was born in East London in 1911 and had an extensive career in film-music composition. He was appointed the musical director for the Rank Organisation (who had strong links with the festival in its earlier years) and composed hundreds of film scores and themes for popular television programmes during his career. His stock music production work even features on The Ren and Stimpy Show and SpongeBob SquarePants. However his conversion to Catholicism, in the early 1970s, contributed to his creation of the St Patrick's Mass, which he composed, produced, and recorded in 1970, before bringing it to Cork in 1971. Green died in 1982 but his recording of St Patrick’s Mass, performed by Canon Sydney MacEwan and Trinity Chorale, is still available and can be streamed on-line. Title A name given to the resource Poet John Montague and companion Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, John Montague, Theo Dorgan, University College Cork Description An account of the resource This is a colour photo of the Irish poet John Montague with an unidentified companion at a drinks reception. The photo is undated and uncredited but is of value to the archive given the legacy of Montague to poetry and his affiliation with the film festival through his friendship with the poet Theo Dorgan. Whilst born in New York, Montague came to Ireland as a child and ended up teaching at the University College Cork (UCC) at the invitation of the then Professor of English Seán Lucy. Montague spent almost sixteen years at UCC before teaching in America, Belfast and Dublin. His early work includes Forms of Exile (1958), Poisoned Lands (1961), A Chosen Light (1967) and The Rough Field (1972). By the mid-eighties he found a new publisher, Peter Fallon of Gallery Press, who revitalised Montague’s publishing oeuvre, including his fiction and memoir. Montague was a founding member of Aosdána, a founding president of the Triskel Arts Centre in Cork, and in 2010 he was made Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur in France, also receiving a doctorate from the Sorbonne. He died in 2016 in Nice, France, where he had a home with his third wife, the writer Elizabeth Wassell. Montague counted Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney as friends and was a charismatic and generous-spirited mentor to many poets in Cork and beyond, including the Cork-born poet Theo Dorgan. Dorgan, also a member of Aosdána, was a key player in the reimagining of the Cork Film Festival along with Mick Hannigan in the early eighties. The photo is undated, but we might suggest that it is from the 1980s when Hannigan, along with the poet Theo Dorgan, took the helm of the festival from Robin O’Sullivan who had managed it magnanimously after the unexpected death of festival founder Dermot Breen in 1978. Hannigan and Dorgan were a formidable team and consolidated the work of the festival bringing short and independent films to big venues such as the Cork Opera House. In 1996 Hannigan opened the first art house cinema in Cork – The Kino – located on Washington Street, at the top of the Western Road. Its first film was the low-key British film Brassed Off (Mark Herman, 1996) but it was Shine (Scott Hick, 1996) that sustained an eleven-week run ensuring the early success of the Kino. It ran both popular and art-house films and, in conjunction with the Cork Film Festival, brought retrospective and cultural films to Cork. However, plagued by financial concerns, the Kino closed its doors in 2009 and the building, once a cultural hub for the city, is now destined for redevelopment. Following his departure from the Cork Film Festival in 2013, Hannigan set up the Indie Cork Film Festival with festival programmer Úna Feely. Feely had worked for the Cork Film Festival since 1995 and was its festival programmer from 2001 until her departure, with Hannigan, in 2013. Hannigan and Feely also run Green Ray Film Agency which provides a broad range of services to filmmakers, festivals, and event organisers. Title A name given to the resource President Patrick Hillery with Lord Mayor Seán French and Patricia French Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, President, Patrick Hillery, Lord Mayor, Seán French, Patricia French Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of President Hillery at a screening with the Lord Mayor of Cork, Seán French and his wife Patricia ‘Patsy’ French. The three of them sit in a row and appear to be enjoying a convivial conversation – Patricia French, in a striped dress tied at the neck with a bow, leans over her husband as she chats with President Hillery. She appears to be wearing the Gold Medallion which is worn by Lady Mayoresses; it is circular shaped with twist wire and a hand-engraved Celtic border. The centre portion is decorated with the Cork Arms and a spray of shamrock. The medallion was presented in 1961 by the Cork Jewellers’ Association to the Corporation. Patrick Hillery (1923-2008), on the right of the photo, was a Fianna Fáil politician who served as the sixth President of Ireland from 1976 to 1990. This picture, taken in 1976, would have been taken a few months before he was made President of Ireland in December of that year. He is shown here sitting next to the Fianna Fáil politician, Seán French, who served as Lord Mayor of Cork during his early presidency, from 1976 to 1977. Seán French represented Cork in Dáil Éireann for 15 years and was a trusted confidante of former Taoiseach Jack Lynch; he ran alongside him in the 1969 and 1973 general elections and would benefit from the large transfers from Lynch who had a huge surplus of votes. His father, also called Seán French, also served as both a Fianna Fáil TD and a Lord Mayor of Cork serving seven terms until his early death, age 47, in 1937. In addition to his political duties Seán French sat on the board of Glen Rovers and the Cork County Basketball Board, where he was treasurer.  At his funeral Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin, noted that French had made an enormous contribution to public life in Cork. O'Kelly, Louis Elliman and others Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, President, Sean T.O'Kelly, Louis Elliman, Ardmore Studios Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of President Seán T.O'Kelly in 1956 standing with the theatre and cinema impresario Louis Elliman, and others identified at the back of the photo as Father J.A.V.Bourke and Major Halliman. President Kelly is standing second from the left and is caught in conversation with his three colleagues, all in evening wear. President Seán T.O'Kelly (1882-1966) was a Fianna Fáil politician who served as the second President of Ireland from 1945 to 1959. He was a friend of Éamon de Valera and, as with de Valera, opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921. O'Kelly was a co-founder of Fianna Fáil after de Valera left Sinn Féin. He retired in 1959 and was replaced by former Taoiseach, de Valera, who had over the years expressed dismay at O'Kelly's membership of the Order of the Knights of Saint Columbanus - an Irish national Catholic fraternal organisation. In this picture, O'Kelly is standing with Louis Elliman (1906-1965) who was an Irish Impresario who managed many of Ireland's cinema screens during the 1950s. Elliman brought film production to Ireland opening the Ardmore Studios, with Emmet Dalton, in 1958. Elliman was involved with the early planning of the Cork Film Festival, along with the festival founder Dermot Breen. O’Kelly arriving at the Savoy Cinema Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, President O'Kelly, President Seán O’Kelly, Lord Mayor, Patrick McGrath, Louis Elliman, Ardmore Studios Description An account of the resource This is a sepia-toned black and white photo of President Seán T O’Kelly being escorted into the Savoy Cinema by the Irish impresario Louis Elliman. This was taken in 1956 during the first edition of the Cork International Film Festival and would have been a momentous occasion. President O’Kelly, wearing a top hat, is shown at the head of the entourage, head bowed. On his right Elliman has his arm linked with O’Kelly and is looking towards him as if listening to O’Kelly speak. The Lord Mayor of Cork, Patrick McGrath, wearing the mayoral gown and sterling silver chain of office, is behind the President coming up the marble steps of the Savoy. He is accompanied by others identified on the photo’s mount as Mr A Elliman, Major TD Hallinan, Fr Cormac and Mr CM Conroy. Patrick McGrath was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who represented Cork in Dáil Éireann between 1946 and 1956. He served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1952 to 1956. McGrath took an active part in the Irish War of Independence and was honoured by his comrades by appointing him chairman of the Cork City Old IRA Men’s Association. During his term of office he welcomed Laurel and Hardy to the townhall during their visit to Cork in September 1953. He died suddenly in 1956 and was honoured by Taoiseach, John A Costello, in the Dáil on his passing who said of McGrath: “The late Deputy was kind, courteous and charitable … He was an eloquent and forcible speaker and made many useful contributions to the debates of the Dáil on national questions.” (Dáil Éireann debate Wednesday, 20 June 1956, Vol. 158 No.5.) President Seán Thomas O’Kelly (1882-1966) was born in inner-city Dublin. He worked in the National Library in Dublin and was an subscriber to the Celtic Literary Society. O’Kelly was one of Ireland’s early leaders of the Sinn Féin party. He was an associate of the Sinn Féin founder Arthur Griffith and from 1913 he helped to raise the Irish Volunteers. During the Easter Rising of 1916 he worked out of the GPO with provisional plans to set up as an administrator of the Irish Republic which never came to fruition. He met his future wife, Mary Ryan, during the Rising and married her in 1918. O’Kelly was later imprisoned in Britain for his part in the Rising before escaping back to Ireland and working with Sinn Féin. He was a close friend of Éamon de Valera, also opposing the Anglo-Irish Treaty, and when de Valera set up the new Republican party Fianna Fáil in 1926 O’Kelly joined it becoming vice-president. O’Kelly was a devout catholic but his membership of the Knights of Columbanus caused de Valera much consternation but O’Kelly refused to relinquish his membership of the Knights. He succeeded Douglas Hyde as President of Ireland and served two terms from June 1945 to June 1959 retiring from public life after his second term. The President is accompanied in this picture by Dublin-born Louis Elliman.
