An audience is gathered around at the back of the room listening to the proceedings and some are taking notes. The photo is dated ‘guess 1960s’ but we can see a poster for the 1977 American mystery film The Late Show (Robert Benton, 1977) taped to the wall of the press room next to a chalk-marked blackboard. This allows us to date the press conference to 1977 (or later). The Late Show was directed by Robert Benton and produced by the award-winning Robert Altman and starred Art Carney and Lily Tomlin whose names feature on the poster. The photographs, by the photographer Donal Sheehan, include the festival director Dermot Breen holding forth alongside the journalist and artist Frank Sanquest, Dick Beamish, and journalist Larry Lyons. They are sitting around a table which is scattered with the detritus of the day including papers, ashtrays, and a black Ericsson Dialog-style telephone. Frank Sanquest, sitting on the far left of the photo, wearing a striped shirt with a dickie-bow, was a Cork-born artist who specialised in portraiture and landscapes. He studied art at the Cork Crawford School of Art and London’s Central School of Art and the College of Printing before returning to Cork. He was a past president of the Munster Fine Art Society and for many years was resident set designer for the Cork Opera House. He was an excellent scene painter and his work at the Cork Opera House included the set for Oklahoma in the 1950s when Dan Donovan was directing for the Cork Operatic Society. Sanquest was on the board of the Southern Theatre Group with Dan Donovan and James Healy which toured with John B Keane plays often with the Cork actor Michael Twomey. They had great success with Sive in 1959. From 1940 to 1987 Sanquest also worked as the Arts Editor for The Cork Examiner, in whose capacity he might have been attending the Film Festival press briefings. He died in 2008, age 95. The journalist Larry Lyons, sitting behind Dick Beamish by the wall, also worked for The Cork Examiner in the 1970s; his journalism covered the fraught days of the troubles in the early 1970s as well as film reviews. Massimo is shown, wearing a light-coloured suit, laughing whilst bent over speaking into the microphone of the switchboard operator's headset. He is surrounded by an animated group of switchboard exchange operators, each with a headset hanging from around their necks. At the back of the photo, a caption note is attached stating that the image depicts the Prince telling the world about Dawn's request for a milk bath. His wife, the actor Dawn Addams, achieved notoriety in Cork that year for requesting a bath filled with milk at the Metropole Hotel; the request caused consternation and was turned down by the-then hotel manager, Douglas Vance. She went on to later admit that it was a publicity stunt dreamt up by her publicist. (We can date this photo as 1957 based on this incident.) Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the English film producer Greg Smith in conversation with the Irish producer Noel Pearson and Ciara Scott. Given the background décor of Harp Lager-sponsored umbrellas, we might guess that this picture was taken at the festival club. Greg Smith, in a light-coloured jacket on the far right, has his back turned to us as he chats with his companions. While the identity of Pearson and Scott (whose name cannot be verified) (perhaps Ciarín Scott?) is noted with a question mark at the back of the photo, this is probably the Dublin-born film and theatrical producer Noel Pearson who worked on the Academy award-winning My Left Foot (Jim Sheridan, 1989) starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Brenda Fricker, and Cyril Cusack. Pearson also produced The Field (Jim Sheridan, 1990) starring Richard Harris, and Dancing at Lughnasa (Pat O’Connor, 1998) with Meryl Streep, Kathy Burke, and Michael Gambon. He originally managed the Dubliners before moving into theatre and becoming the artistic director of the Abbey Theatre where he staged Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa, before adapting it to film in 1998. His production company, Ferndale Productions, also produced The Secret Scripture (Jim Sheridan, 2016), based on the novel by Sebastian Barry, and starring Rooney Mara and Vanessa Redgrave. The film producer Greg Smith was behind a series of X-rated successful movies during the 1970s including Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), Confessions of a Pop Performer (Norman Cohen, 1975), Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Claire Brough, 1976), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977). His collaborations with the Irish director Norman Cohen also include Spike Milligan’s war memoirs: Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (Norman Cohen, 1973) and Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977) starring his then-wife Lynda Bellingham and Pamela Stephenson, both of whom are in the archive. Born in Dublin, Kelly (1929-2012) was an Irish actor with a recognisable presence on the Irish stage and screen. She is shown looking directly at the camera wide-eyed and lips parted. Addams (1930-1985) was very much a Hollywood star in the 1950s and her visit to Cork during this era was a highlight for the festival and the press. In particular her request, during the 1957 film festival, for a milk bath at the at the Cork Metropole Hotel caused much consternation. The request was shot down by the then manager of the hotel, Douglas Vance, because "the people of Cork are finding it hard to make ends meet" (Independent, 09.11.2012). Her vivacious personality must have been a joy to capture by the photographers of the day as is evident from the many photos of her in the archive. Bellingham, wearing a light-coloured dress, is shown glancing upwards and smiling as she eats from a napkin-covered dish. Lynda Bellingham (1948-2014) was an English actor, broadcaster and author who was a familiar presence on British television, in particular for her work as lunchtime chat show host on Loose Women between 2007 and 2011 with whom she made more than 300 appearances. She also had a long-standing television career including parts in All Creatures Great and Small and Doctor Who as well as film credits that include Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Clare Brough, 1976) and Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers (1977) directed by the Irish director Norman Cohen. Bellingham will be best remembered for her commercial role as the ‘Oxo mum’ in the long-running series of TV ads selling Oxo gravy, between 1983 to 1999. She also worked in theatre and had a successful run with the touring production of Calendar Girls between 2008 and 2012. Bellingham was married three times and during the 1970s, when she came to Cork, she was married to the film and theatre producer Greg Smith. Smith also came to Cork, and worked with Norman Cohen on the Confessions series of movies.
