Fellow dignitaries include festival director Robin O’Sullivan, in the centre of the back row, and representatives from Ford Motor Ireland who were the main sponsors for the festival that year.  Dan Wallace (1942-) was a former Fianna Fáil politician who served Cork for almost twenty-five years as a TD for the Cork North-Central constituency and as a Lord Mayor from 1985 to 1986. He once worked as a customs clerk with the Ford Motor Company in Cork and might have been familiar with the Ford representatives in this photo. Ford Motors, had a purpose-built factory on the Marina in Cork and once employed up to 7,000 workers. The factory closed in 1984, with the Ford Sierra being the last model produced. Richard Attenborough (1923-2014) was an English politician, actor, and award-winning filmmaker. He is the older brother of Sir David Attenborough. Richard Attenborough’s prolific filmography includes acting roles in The Great Escape (John Sturges, 1963), Loot (Silvio Narizzano, 1970), and Rosebud (1975) directed by Otto Preminger and starring Peter O’Toole – both of whom came to the Cork festival. Attenborough directed Gandhi (1982), Chaplin (1992), Shadowlands (1993), and his final film Closing the Ring in 2007. Around the time of this picture in 1985 he had just finished A Chorus Line (1985) and was working on the Academy-nominated epic film Cry Freedom (1987) which he directed and produced. Cry Freedom was nominated for three academy awards and won the Peace Film Award at the Berlin Festival that year. Attenborough was a member of the prestigious European Film Academy (EFA). Founded in 1989, with Ingmar Bergman as its first president, it seeks to advance the interests of the European film industry and to increase public awareness of European cinema. The EFA invited former festival director Mick Hannigan to join the academy in 2006. Hannigan took over as festival director from Robin O’Sullivan soon after this photo was taken in 1985. As a voting member of EFA Hannigan’s name joined a list that includes, along with Attenborough and Bergman, Pedro Almodóvar, Federico Fellini, and David Puttnam. In 2020 the chairman of the academy is the Irish producer, author, and journalist Mike Downey. They show the convivial Robin O’Sullivan, in photos marked 1980s, in conversation with festival attendees. O’Sullivan stepped in to run the film festival after the unexpected death of the festival founder Dermot Breen in 1978, and ran it until Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan took up the cudgels in the early eighties. O’Sullivan originally worked as a journalist for the then-Cork Examiner and as a reporter for RTÉ news. He set up his own PR company – O’Sullivan Public Relations Ltd – in the early eighties which has since amalgamated with the successful public relations company AM O’Sullivan PR, run by his daughter Ann-Marie O’Sullivan. At the 50th anniversary of the film festival the former festival president, Charlie Hennessy, acknowledged the contribution of O’Sullivan to the festival noting that he “kept this festival alive when it was in very low water”. George Baker, in a striped shirt and tie, stands on the right next to Dan Donovan on the far right. While this photo is dated 1970s we might suggest it is 1972 from the glimpse of the festival brochure in Dan Donovan’s pocket. Donovan (1926-2008) was a founding member of Cork’s Everyman Theatre and Cork’s cultural legacy owes much to his passion and love of the arts. He was a board director of the Cork Choral Festival as well as the Cork Film Festival. His colleague on the left of this photo, Robin O’Sullivan, was also a stalwart film festival committee member who went on to become its director in the late seventies following the unexpected death of festival founder Dermot Breen. He ran it during a difficult time for the festival before handing over the reins to Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan in 1985. The English actor and writer George Baker (1931-2011) was a star of cinema, stage, and television. He famously had an affair with the French actor Brigitte Bardot whilst married to the first of his three wives. However he is remembered by most for his role as Inspector Wexford in the successful Ruth Rendall crime drama television series The Ruth Rendell Mysteries (1987-2000). Baker has extensive television and film credits including The Dam Busters (Michael Anderson, 1955), Goodbye, Mr Chips (Herbert Ross, 1969) starring Peter O’Toole and Petula Clark, and The Spy Who Loved Me (Lewis Gilbert, 1977) with Roger Moore. Around the time of this photo he had completed The Executioner (Sam Wanamaker, 1970) starring Judy Geeson who also came to the Cork festival in the seventies. Baker briefly ran a successful regional theatre company during the late sixties and early seventies bringing his tour of Terence Rattigan’s The Sleeping Prince (1968) and Christopher Fry’s The Lady’s Not for Burning (1971) to the West End. Ronald ‘Ronnie’ Shiner stands on the far left of the photo with his arm over the shoulder of his companion. Shiner (1903-1966) was a British stand-up comedian and comedy actor who worked on the stage, as well as television and film. He has an extensive filmography and a career highlight includes the stage version of Worm’s Eye View (1945 to 1947) followed by a film version in 1952 with Diana Dors. In 1962, around the time this photo was taken, he had made a TV version of Worm’s Eye View for the BBC. Shiner was the subject of This is Your Life in 1958 when he was surprised by Eamon Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre. Reportedly he insured his distinctive nose, with Lloyds of London, for $30,000. While this photo is marked 1960, the RTÉ archive has a news broadcast, dated 17 September 1962, of Shiner attending the opening of the festival with the German actor Ingeborg Schöner. He is shown, elbows resting on the table holding up a cigar in his left hand, listening to someone out of sight.  The date of the photo is '1960s' which would make Roy Edward Disney, born in 1930, and whom this photo closely resembles, approximately 40 years which makes us suspect either the date or subject of the photo. Another similar image in the archive, dated '1970s' might be more accurate. Roy Disney, who had a home in West Cork, was the nephew of the late Walt Disney and a formidable longtime senior executive of the Walt Disney Company. Born in California, he worked all his life for Walt Disney Productions and made a significant impact on its direction, striving to keep it from being split up by fellow Disney executives in particular Ron Miller in 1984, and Michael Eisner in 2005. Roy Disney became an adopted native of Cork when he purchased Coolmain Castle near Kilbrittain, County Cork, in the early 1990s and, being a keen sailor, was a regular visitor to Cork race week. He died from stomach cancer in 2009, age 79. Title A name given to the resource Russian film director Stanislav Rostotsky and others Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Stanislav Rostotsky, Russia, Dermot Breen, Nina Menshikova Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Russian director Stanislav Rostotsky with festival director Dermot Breen and two unidentified female colleagues. The small convivial group, all dressed in evening wear, stand together smoking and laughing. The photo is dated provisionally ‘1970s’ and notes that the lady wearing a floral high-necked dress, at the far left, is a ‘Russian actor’. Stanislav Rostotsky, standing on the far right, was a Soviet film director and screenwriter. Born to a Russian-Polish family in 1922, Rostotsky served as a photojournalist for the Red Army before becoming a film director. He directed more than 12 motion pictures between 1955 and 1989 – often with war as a running theme. Rostotsky served as President of the Moscow International Film Festival on a number of occasions until his retirement from the film industry after his final film in 1989 (From the Life of Fyodor Kuzkin) stating that he had nothing left to say. The 1967 Cork Film Festival programme notes that the festival showed Rostotsky’s film Bela (1966) that year. Two of his later films - The Dawns Here Are Quiet (1972) and White Bim Black Ear (1977) - were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The unidentified Russian actor in this photo might be his wife, the Russian actor Nina Menshikova (1928-2007). She had a prolific film career but acted in only one of Rostotsky’s films: We’ll Live Till Monday (1968). She was the mother of the Russian actor Andrei Rostotsky born in 1957. Like his father, Andrei too served in the Soviet Army before becoming an actor and director. He died in 2002 following a climbing accident while shooting his new film My Frontier. Standing on the left Hidari is holding a St Finbarr statue, the design of which is attributed to the Cork-born sculptor Séamus Murphy. Her companion, dressed in a taffeta-style evening gown and striped linen-style scarf, is cradling the Waterford Glass trophy in the crook of her left arm.  Hidari is wearing a light-coloured kimono which is a traditional formal Japanese robe, usually made of hand-dyed silk and worn on special occasions. Hidari's kimono is tied at her waist with a metallic-coloured wide sash (known as an obi) which is wrapped around her waist and tied in the front with a bow. The lower half of the kimono is elaborately designed with images of simple huts which might be a reference to traditional Japanese tea houses. Sachiko Hidari (1930-2001) was a Japanese actor and film director. Born in the Toyama Prefecture she became an actor in 1952 when she was 22 years old. The Historical Dictionary of Postwar Japan (William D Hoover, 2018) notes that she received international recognition in 1957 when she received the award for best actor at the Cork Film Festival for her role in Kamiska Shiro No Hanzai (The Crime of Shiro Kamisaka) (1956), directed by Hisamat-su Seiji. By all accounts, she was an independent-minded woman who stepped outside the passive social role expected of Japanese women during this era. In 1977 she was the first Japanese woman to direct a film with Töi Ippon No Michi (Far Road) in which she also starred. It was the story of a railroad worker's wife set over the course of 30 years and was financed by the Japanese National Railway Workers' Union as it was difficult to get funding from the big studios (The New York Times, 12.02.1978). We note this photo is dated 1960 but Sachiko Hidari was given her award for best actor in 1957, so we bear this in mind. Interestingly, if this photo is from 1957 it was taken a year after she was threatened in Japan by gangsters from the yakuza crime syndicate. The yakuza were believed to have been hired by the Nikkatsu Film Company to intimidate her for daring to become an independent freelance actor outside of their control (The New York Times, 12.02.1978).
