Title A name given to the resource Peter O'Toole with Dermot Breen and Leslie Mallory Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Peter O'Toole, Dermot Breen, Leslie Mallory Description An account of the resource This is a sepia-toned photograph, dated 1963, of the actor Peter O’Toole walking with the festival director Dermot Breen and the journalist Leslie Mallory. All three are shown smiling whilst in conversation. A dapper-looking O’Toole, in glasses on the far right of the photo, is looking towards Breen and Mallory with a broad grin. Mallory on the far left, in sunglasses and hand in pocket, walks alongside Breen who is smiling as he steps forward. We might guess that Mallory and Breen are meeting O’Toole on the tarmacadam of Cork Airport which had recently opened in 1961. Leslie Mallory was an RTÉ news reporter who died in 2006, age 81. He worked in RTÉ radio and television news for most of his career. He also dabbled in film production and wrote a script of a feature film at the behest of Peter Sellers. He moved back to Ireland from London in the 1970s and was a senior foreign editor by the time of his retirement. By all accounts he was a beloved colleague. (Dermot Mullane, Sunday Independent, 26.03.2006.) Peter O’Toole (1932-2013) was a British actor of Irish descent. He was either born in Connemara, Co. Galway or Leeds in England depending on his telling. A stage and film actor of Irish descent he was a Shakespearean actor with the Bristol Old Vic with whom he played many parts including Hamlet (1958, 1963) and Waiting for Godot (1958), which he reprised at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1969. His love for the theatre was such that he would turn down film roles stating that “You’ve got to go to Stratford when you get the chance.” (Stephen Watts, New York Times, 05.02.1961.) O'Toole achieved international recognition for his part as TE Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean, 1962) which was released a year before this photo was taken. He holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations for acting without receiving a win including aforementioned Lawrence of Arabia, The Lion In Winter (Anthony Harvey, 1968), Mr Chips (Herbert Ross, 1969), and the British comedy-drama Venus (Roger Mitchell, 2002) written by Hanif Kureishi. He did however receive an honorary Academy Award in 2003 which might have assuaged his missing out on earlier nominations. O'Toole died in London, age 81, and his ashes taken to the West of Ireland. He was a friend of the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, who spent time with him in Galway over the years, and who speaks fondly of him: “He was unsurpassed for the grace he brought to every performance on and off the stage.” (www.thejournal.ie, 15.12.2013.) This is an early photograph of the Cork-born artist and journalist Sanquest, taken in the 1960s. As with other photographs of him in the archive he is wearing his trademark dickie bow but has yet to succumb to wearing glasses. The bespectacled actor David Kossoff stands next to him and appears to be peering around Sanquest who is smiling at the camera holding aloft a plate. The actor Margaret Rose Mount, in a leopard-skin coat draped around her bare shoulders, is smiling broadly while her unidentified companion, on the far right of the photo, looks towards Sanquest and his plate. Behind them we can just about make out a promotional poster for Harp Lager hanging on the wall next to the draped curtains. David Kossoff (1919-2005) was an English actor, writer and raconteur. He was born in East London to Russian-Jewish parents and worked as a furniture designer before becoming an actor. He has many film credits and won a British Academy Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer to Film for his role in The Young Lovers (Anthony Asquith,1954). He followed this with the Oscar-winning short film The Bespoke Overcoat (Jack Clayton,1956) which was written by Nikolai Gogol and Wolf Mankowitz, who also came to Cork, and The Mouse That Roared (Jack Arnold,1959) starring Peter Sellers and Jean Seberg who came to Cork with the film St Joan (Otto Preminger, 1957). On the television Kossoff was best-known for his role as the hen-pecked husband Alf Larkin in The Larkins (1958). His wife in the series was the English actor Margaret Rose Mount OBE (1915-2001) who is identified in this photo with Kossoff. Mount also acted with Kossoff in the British comedy film Inn for Trouble (CM Pennington-Richards, 1960) which was a spin-off from The Larkins. Mount had an extensive television, film and stage career with film credits including Hotel Paradiso (Peter Glenville,1966) with Alec Guinness and Gina Lollobrigida, and Oliver! (Carol Reed, 1968) with Oliver Reed and Harry Secombe. Her stage credits include the title role of Brecht’s Mother Courage (1977) and Uncle Vanya (1996) with Derek Jacobi at the National Theatre before she retired soon after due to her failing eyesight. We note that David Kossoff was the father of the blues guitarist Paul Kossoff (1950-1976) from the band Free which was responsible for the hit ‘All Right Now’ (1970). Wikipedia notes that the Rolling Stone magazine ranked Paul Kossoff 51st in their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Paul Kossoff’s health was poor due to his drug addictions and he died age 25 from a pulmonary embolism. After his death his father, David Kossoff, spent the rest of his life campaigning fervently against drugs and toured schools with his one-man stage show, The Late Great Paul, about his son’s death and the effect that it had on him and his family. The all-male symphony orchestra is not identified but we note that they are all standing, as is the audience, and they might be playing the National Anthem at the end of the concert. The photo notes that this photo was taken during the ‘Tóstal era’ so we might date it to the mid-fifties when Tóstal was inaugurated in Cork in 1953. Tóstal was a festival held around Ireland to celebrate Ireland’s national image and lift the country from a period of economic depression. Music was very much a part of this rebranding with the establishment of the Cork Choral Festival in 1954 spearheaded by Aloys Fleischmann (1910-1992) who founded the Cork Symphony Orchestra in 1934. A large crowd, held back by young men in white slacks and shirts, are gathered in front of the City Hall to watch the Lord Mayor and colleagues raise the flag, which flutters in the wind above their heads. The Cork Film Festival emerged from the tourist festival An Tóstal (1953-1958), a pageant held around Ireland to celebrate Ireland’s national image and whose self-stated primary object was to increase its tourist industry and ‘appreciate the beauties of our own land’. While this photo does not identify the dignitaries in this picture we recognise the back of Lord Mayor Patrick McGrath at the flag; he served as Lord Mayor from 1952-1955 which helps us date this picture to his mayoralty. Behind him, on the marble steps of the City Hall, we recognise the low stature of the Cork Fianna Fáil politician Gus Healy who would serve as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976.
