Thomsett, on the far left with a liqueur glass in hand, looks on as the others chat. Born in 1950 she would have been around 22 years old in this picture. She had just finished the film Straw Dogs (Sam Peckinpah, 1971) starring Dustin Hoffman, but was best known for her role, playing the part of a young girl, in the British drama film The Railway Children (1970) written and directed by Lionel Jeffries. Born in 1935, Julian Glover is an English actor of stage, television and film including The Empire Strikes Back (aka Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back) (Irvin Kershner, 1980), For Your Eyes Only (John Glen, 1981), and as the voice of Aragog, the giant spider in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) directed by Chris Columbus. Most recently he had a recurring role in Game of Thrones (2011-2016) as Grand Maester Pycelle, and has appeared in an episode of the historical television series The Crown (2019). Around the time of this photo, dated 1972, Glover had appeared in Nicholas and Alexandra (Franklin J Schaffner, 1971), and Antony and Cleopatra (1972) directed by Charlton Heston who also played the main role of Mark Antony. The film was made by Rank Organisation who were key players in the early days of the film festival and would sent their stars and representatives to the festival – some of whom can be seen in the archive. Glover, standing next to a young woman identified as Yvonne O’Reilly, is looking towards Sally Thomsett in this picture. Thomsett, born in 1950, is an actor best known for her role as one of the children (Phyllis Waterbury) in the 1970 film The Railway Children directed by Lionel Jeffries. Around the time of this photo she had just completed the thriller Straw Dogs (Sam Peckinpah, 1971) starring Dustin Hoffman and the Irish actor Jim Norton. On the far right the fair-haired actor Shane Briant, in a velvet jacket over a white ruffled tuxedo shirt, is turned towards his companion, identified as Nora Prendergast from Cork. Flags adorn the building in a night-time scene and crowds are gathered outside. Posters include signs for World Premiere - tonight at 8pm; Anna Neagle, Sylvia Syms; and the film My Teenage Daughter (Herbert Wilcox, 1956). The Savoy cinema was opened by the then Lord Mayor of Cork, Frank J Wallace, in May 1932. With almost 2,000 seats it was the largest cinema in the country at the time. It had an elaborate art-deco exterior and hosted the festival from its beginning in 1956. The last feature film screened at the Savoy was The Towering Inferno (John Guillermin, 1974) on Saturday 1st February 1975. The light of the projector can be seen on the crowded balcony that is home to the Farmgate Café. Downstairs, in the market foyer, the audience are seated around the cast-iron market fountain looking up at a screen out of shot. The distinct signage for the long-established Moynihan’s Poultry market stall can be seen in the background. The English Market has often been transformed into a cultural hub and ad hoc cinema over the years, be it for the Cork Film Festival or the season finale premiere of The Young Offenders in 2018. The Farmgate has been the venue for a series of film festival ‘Grand Café Screenings’ of silent classics, sometimes with live musical accompaniment, and this image might be of one of those screenings. The market dates back to King James 1 in 1610 but it began trading as a covered market in 1788. It was named the ‘English Market’ to reflect the protestant makeup of the corporation of the time – the name also distinguished it from a nearby ‘Irish Market,’ otherwise known as St. Peter’s Market, located on North Main Street at the junction of Cornmarket Street. The English Market once served the wealthier classes in Cork, while the less well-off shopped at the Irish Market. The Irish Market is long since gone and is now the Bodega Bar at Cornmarket Street, while the English Market continues to thrive. Its fortunes wax and wane in tandem with the history of the city – be it revolution, fire, recession, or coronavirus pandemic – however it continues to act as the heartbeat of the city and its importance is unquestionable. Patrick O’Sullivan is sitting on Robin O’Sullivan’s desk who is looking up at him as they talk. A small stone sculpture, which might be a festival award, sits on the table between them and behind them, pinned to the back wall, we note a hand-drawn cartoon of a robin on top of a Coca-Cola can wrapped in film reel. Patrick O’Sullivan (1940-2015) was born in London to Irish parents and studied sculpture in England before moving to Cork in 1971. He lectured in sculpture at the Crawford College of Art and Design and during the time of this photo, dated 1980s, he was Head of Sculpture, a post he held from the 1980s to 1990s. O’Sullivan’s work, in marble, wood and bronze, has been exhibited around Ireland and his commission, City, made from Kilkenny limestone, was placed on the South Mall in Cork as part of the Cork 800 sculpture symposium in 1985. Patrick O’Sullivan was a member of Aosdána. Established in 1981, Aosdána was set up by the Arts Council to honor artists whose work has contributed to the arts in Ireland. Membership is by peer nomination and is limited to 250 living artists who have produced a distinguished body of work. Fellow artist and Aosdána member Michael Quane speaking of O’Sullivan notes that: "Patrick O’Sullivan was always insightful and never failed to challenge. Like his work, he too in his personal style was quiet, quizzical, and enigmatic. All those who came within his reach, within his department, were often left guessing, questioning, perhaps occasionally exasperated, but always some way altered. That he changed, in some way, the world with which he came into contact, in such a non-didactic way, is a fine and worthy legacy for the quiet man and artist that Patrick O’ Sullivan was." The convivial group is dressed formally, and Marten, wearing a flower-decorated light-coloured dress, is looking up to Barry who is smoking. A whorl of smoke rises up through the air, crowning Barry, who is turned towards Marten as he listens to her. The picture is provisionally dated ‘1970s’ and would have been taken a few years before Murphy’s death in 1975. We have a particular affection for Seamus Murphy in the archive as he designed the St Finbarr statuette which was handed out as a film festival award for many years. Murphy was an Irish sculptor and stone carver with a studio based at Watercourse Road, in Blackpool, Cork. He was inspired by the writer Daniel Corkery, a teacher at his school, to attend the Cork Crawford School of Art. After receiving a scholarship he later went to Paris to study under the Irish-American sculptor Andrew O’Connor before returning to Cork and opening up his studio. Murphy was commissioned to design the Church of the Annunciation, in Blackpool, Cork, as well a number of unique carvings of statues, gravestones, and monuments around the City and beyond. Many examples of his work can be seen in the cemetery of St Finn Barre’s Cathedral especially in ‘Musicians’ Corner.’ A favourite City monument is his limestone drinking trough for dogs – tucked away at the top of Patrick’s Street under a now empty shopfront at number 121. It is marked Madraí – the Irish word for dogs. A short documentary about Seamus Murphy, <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art </a>(1958) by Louis Marcus, premiered at the festival in 1959. Murphy was married to Maigread, who was a founder of the Cork Arts Society and the Cork Film Society. She was a gifted artist in her own right and designed the well-known Paddy Irish Whisky logo. They met at the Cork Crawford School of Art and went on to have three children, the novelist Orla Murphy, the musician Colm Murphy, and the designer Bebhinn Marten who we see in this picture talking to Peter Barry. Bebhinn Marten is a knitwear designer based in Baltimore, Cork. Her company, Beacon Designs, developed during the 1970s, was one of the few knitwear companies designing and manufacturing in Ireland. However, due to the decline in the Irish woolen industry, the knitwear factory shut down and she converted the factory into a home. A bespectacled Smith is standing on the far left, in a light-coloured suit, striped shirt and holding a cigarette and glass in his right hand slightly raised. Sheamus Smith had an illustrious career with RTÉ and beyond. He started out as a photojournalist for the now defunct Dublin paper Evening Press before moving to Canada to study film and television. He returned to Ireland in 1961 to join the newly formed Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) starting as a cameraman before becoming a producer and director with the station in 1963. The following decade he was appointed Managing Director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975 and was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). The RTÉ archives remind us that Smith was present at the assassination of Indira Ghandi in October 1984. She was on her way to meet with Sheamus Smith and Rory O'Farrell in her New Delhi garden when she was shot dead by her bodyguards in front of Smith. An interview that Ghandi had made with the Irish broadcaster, Marian Finucane, had been recorded three months earlier and was broadcast that October in a special edition of <a href="https://www.rte.ie/archives/2014/1031/655796-indira-ghandi-born-into-politics/">The Woman's Programme</a> dedicated to Indira Ghandi. O’Herlihy was a keen cinephile and brought this to his work at the film board. O’Herlihy promoted the film industry and in particular was keen to develop filming in rural Ireland; he worked for some time as PR for the Cork Film Festival where he emphasised the focus on Irish film. Born in 1930 in California, he worked all his life for Walt Disney Productions and made a significant impact on its direction, striving to keep it from being split up by fellow Disney executives. Disney became an adopted native of Cork when he purchased Coolmain Castle near Killbrittan, Cork in the early 1990s and, being a keen sailor, was a regular visitor to Cork race week before his death in 2009. He went on to produce Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977), starring his then-wife Lynda Bellingham who was also at the Cork Film Festival.
