We can see the back of the choir, facing the conductor, as they sing. The conductor is looking down at his music - his arms raised in gesticulation. To the right of the choir an organist, his music strewn on the lid of the piano, accompanies the choir. Below them we can see the congregation seated in church pews that stretch before us and up as far as the mosaic-tiled apse that surrounds the marble altar. The Church is not identified but we can tell from this photo that it is the interior of St Francis Church on Liberty Street in Cork. With its Byzantine-styled red-brick exterior the Church and Friary of St Francis was founded on Liberty Street in the mid-nineteenth century, before being rebuilt in July 1953. It is tucked behind the Cork Courthouse and partially stands on the site of old Broad Lane Church. Whilst typical in style for 1950s Ireland it retains notable interior fittings that distinguish it, such as its stained glass windows and doors. It is spacious, full of light and decorated with mosaics designed in the main by the Italian artist, Professor Umberto Noni who declared it to be 'the very crowning of [his] life's work'. The Church is not identified but we can tell from this photo that it is the interior of St Francis Church on Liberty Street in Cork. St Francis Church is a Byzantine-style red-brick church and friary founded on Liberty Street in the mid-nineteenth century, before being rebuilt in July 1953. It is tucked behind the Cork City Courthouse and partially stands on the site of the old Broad Lane Church. When it was being built in 1954 workmen found part of the old city wall of Cork and an inscribed stone dated '1586' which is now part of the wall of the friary. Its city location and spacious interior made it an ideal location for the crowds that attended the annual Cork Film Festival St Finbarr mass. It shows the English actor Mollie Peters, sitting with the festival director Dermot Breen. They are seated side-by-side at a dinner table and Peters, wearing an emerald green dress, is shown in profile looking towards Breen. Breen, in a dinner suit, is leaning on the table, holding a cigarette in his yellowed fingers, and is half-turned towards Peters. In front of them, we note the detritus of dinner, together with glasses of wine. Mollie (sometimes spelled 'Molly') Peters was the stage name of Vivien Mollie Rudderham, an English actor best known for her role as Nurse Patricia Fearing, opposite Sean Connery's 007 in Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965). She was famously the first Bond girl to take off her clothes on-screen, earning the franchise its first X-rating. Several scenes were cut at the request of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) for their risqué nature. Despite the success of Thunderball, Peters went on to have a short-lived film career, mainly due to contractual disagreements with her agent that forestalled her career. Purcell, with his trademark beard, and hands clasped before him, is looking at the microphone as if in conversation or mid-speech. Breen is looking up at Purcell on the right. Purcell was a regular visitor to the festival and there are many images of him in the archive. He was born in Dublin in 1900 and started out as a schoolboy working at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin. Well known for his stagecraft Purcell would later appear in the first sound film version of The Blue Lagoon (Frank Launder, 1949), and has a large filmography including parts in Moby Dick (John Huston, 1956), Mutiny on the Bounty (Lewis Milestone, 1962), and The Mackintosh Man (1973) directed by John Huston. He was married to Eileen Marmion who was also a stage performer who performed all over Ireland and the UK. Noel Purcell died in 1985, age 85, and his wife Marmion died, age 100, in 2018. The convivial group might be seated at a table in the Oyster Tavern on Market Lane in Cork. James Mason (1909-1984) appears a couple of times in the archive. Around the time of this picture, Mason was making the war film The Blue Max (John Guillermin, 1966) which was shot at Ardmore Studios and filmed in various locations around Ireland. The film was about a German fighter pilot on the Western Front during World War I. Some of the scenes were shot at the Carrickabrack Viaduct in Fermoy, Co. Cork where George Peppard as Leutnant Stachel and James Mason, as Generalleutnant Von Klugermann, flew several times under the spectacular railway bridge which spans the River Blackwater. While the photograph is not dated we might guess it was taken during the early tenure of his presidency in the fifties, during which time Patrick McGrath served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1952-1955. De Valera stands on a podium in front of 31 South Mall in Cork, where the London Assurance Corporation 1720 had their Cork Branch. On-lookers look out from the office windows down at the events below. Above we can see the windows of the local accountancy firm Lantry & Co. Uniformed soldiers stand in rows in front of the podium, their right arm slightly raised at their hip bearing arms. De Valera is accompanied on his right by Lord Mayor, Patrick McGrath, and various dignitaries including Dermot Breen and the then president of University College Cork, Alfred O'Rahilly (1884-1969). The academic O'Rahilly (1884-1969) briefly served as a politician (1943-1954) but was best known for his presidency of the University College Cork from 1943 to 1954. A Sinn Féin supporter, O'Rahilly was interned in Spike Island prison in Cork in 1921 for his political writings. In his capacity as President of the University, he would work closely with the Trade Unions and initiated workers' education courses during the late 1940s. On the death of his wife in 1955, he became a priest, and later Monsignor, and would be awarded the Pontifical Order of Saint Gregory the Great by Pope Pius XII which is the highest distinction that can be awarded to a layman by the Catholic Church. The Irish Times noted that he was 'imperious and some considered him comical, but he silenced his detractors with outstanding intellect and scholarship' (06.10.1998). The same Irish Times article records that O'Rahilly contemplated a multi-volume life of Christ prompting his colleague Mgr Padraig de Bruin to observe that 'a life of O'Rahilly by Christ would be much more interesting.' A building at the university has been dedicated to him since 1998. Flags of the participating countries adorn the building in a daytime street scene. A group of boys on the left of the picture face the camera, just about to cross the street. Behind them, bicycles lay strewn on the pavement and besides them, two cars are parked at the kerb-side. To the right of the Savoy, we can see the old façade of the Irish Tourist Bureau (Oifig Fáilte). Amongst the cinema posters on display, we can just make out posters advertising the appearance of the German actor Claus Holm (1918-1996) and the German screenwriter and director Bernhard Grzimek (1909-1987) who was the director of the documentary Serengeti Shall Not Die (Grzimek, 1959). It won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1960. The Savoy cinema was opened on 12th May 1932 by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Frank J. Wallace with a screening of Peach O'Reno (William A. Seiter, 1931). It could hold 2,242 patrons and boasted an Art Deco façade. In his book on Irish Cinemas, Jim Keenan noted the Savoy had an "ornate 'atmospheric' auditorium, which, like the Savoy in Dublin, was designed to resemble a street scene in Venice... Small lights set into the ceiling of the auditorium were designed to create the illusion that the audience was seated outdoors at night beneath the stars. In the 1930s, a 'cloud projector' beamed images of moving clouds onto the azure-coloured ceiling to further enhance the fantasy." (Jim Keenan. Irish Cinemas: A History in Photographs, pp. 105-106.)
