The programme was compiled, printed and presented to Cork Film International by the London Friends of Cork for the Gala Premiere of The Man Who Would Be King (John Huston, 1975) starring Sean Connery, Michael Canine, Saeed Jaffrey and Christopher Plummer, to aid the 21st film festival. Title A name given to the resource Mick Hannigan outside The Long Valley Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Mick Hannigan, The Long Valley, Theo Dorgan, Peader Moynihan, Seamus Murphy Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the former festival director, Mick Hannigan, reading from a makeshift podium in front of the Long Valley Bar on Winthrop Street in Cork. To the right, leaning against the wall of the arched lobby, we note the distinctive profile of an androgynous glam-rock devotee, dressed in a brass-buttoned jacket, typical of the early 1970s when this picture was taken. The Long Valley hosts a weekly poetry event called Ó Bhéal (word of mouth) in its Hayloft Bar. So the presence of the former film festival director reading poetry from the rostrum, decorated with a poster marked Poetry “Live” All Day, might not seem incongruous to Corkonians familiar with the bohemian bent of the Long Valley. Also known as Moynihan’s Long Valley Bar, the Long Valley opened its doors in 1842. It was run for many years by Mr (Humphrey) Moynihan and Mrs (Rita) Moynihan before being taken over by their son Peader Moynihan who runs it in the same fashion as his parents, and his grandfather John Moynihan before them. It is one of the few bars in Cork that retains a snug, just inside the doors on the left, where the etched windows throw light onto the large table that was once the property of the American Embassy in Dublin. Further into the main bar, the hand-crafted tables include a singular large circular table that you’d be lucky to bag on a busy December day. In his article on the Long Valley, Dan Hickey tells us that it came from the Celtic, a White Star Line ship that ran aground off Roche’s Point near Cork Harbour in December 1928. Many patrons have sat around these historic tables with a Long Valley pint and an iconic doorstep sandwich. And, as the poet and former film festival organiser, Theo Dorgan notes: “It would take a strong man in the full of his health, with the help of three small children, to munch through their mouth-watering sandwiches.” A sculpted bust of the troubled Irish composer, Frederick May (1911-1985), by the Cork-born sculptor Séamus Murphy, sits amongst the artworks on display in the Long Valley, and we note its presence because Murphy designed the St Finbarr statuette which was handed out to award winners in the early decades of the film festival. A bearded Cyril Cusack stands on the left, arms folded, in mid-conversation while both Eamon Andrews, at the centre, and Dermot Breen smile for the camera. Cyril Cusack (1910-1993), and his daughter Sinéad, were both visitors to the festival. Born in South Africa, to an English mother and Irish father, Cusack ended up in Ireland when his parents separated. He joined the Abbey Theatre in 1932 with whom he acted almost sixty plays before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1962. In the meantime he had established a successful film career and has an extensive filmography including The Rising of the Moon (John Ford, 1957), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (Martin Ritt, 1965), The Day of the Jackal (Fred Zinnemann, 1973), and as Michil, in the first Irish language film Poitín (Bob Quinn, 1978) starring Cusack along with Donal McCann, Niall Tóibín, and Mick Lally. This photo is marked 1959 and Cusack had filmed Shake Hands with the Devil (Michael Anderson, 1959) that year. His last stage performance was in Chekhov's Three Sisters (1990) in which his three daughters, Sinéad, Sorcha, and Niamh also acted.  Dublin-born Eamon Andrews (1922-1987) was a well-known Irish radio and television presenter who worked primarily in England. He chaired the Radio Éireann Authority (now the RTÉ Authority) from 1960 overseeing the introduction of state television in Ireland. However he relinquished the role in 1964 following a row over the controversial content of the Late Late Show whose freedom of expression he defended. He worked as a sports commentator for many years before pioneering the chat show format in the UK. He is best known for his work as a presenter on the chat show This is Your Life which ran from its inception in 1955 until his death in 1987. One of the interviews he made in 1960 was with the Irish writer Brendan Behan in Meet the Quare Fella. He was awarded an honorary Commander of the British Empire in 1970 for his contribution to British broadcasting. He died some years later in 1987, age 64, following a short illness. Father Burke was a friend of the festival since its inception and he appears in the archive in a photo taken during the first film festival in 1956. Cornelius ('Con') Howard (1925-2009) was a founding member of the Merriman Summer School in addition to his career as a diplomat. He was attached to the Irish embassies in both London and Washington during his tenure. It is noted that by all accounts he was an affable and skillful diplomat despite not achieving more recognition for his work. Koval, on the left with glass in hand, is smiling directly at the camera while Breen is turned towards his companion. Kazma is wearing a light-coloured satin dress accessorised with a glass bead necklace. Her dark hair is tied up and she is smiling broadly. The photo, marked with the details of a London-based photographer, was probably taken in London at a reception held by the London Friends of Cork at the Martini Terrace. The journalist Koval was a frequent guest of the festival. He was a respected film critic who had a positive impact on the public representation of the festival during the 1960s. He attended international film festivals, including Cannes, Berlin, Locarno in Switzerland, and Cork, and his reviews were published in publications from Germany, France, Switzerland, and America. Koval always presented Cork in a most congenial fashion and was instrumental in keeping Cork on the radar of the international press until his death in 1970. It is a detail from his painting Mambo Negro which is in the collection of the actor Peter Weller. (The full painting is shown on page 7 of the programme.) The detail, which wraps around the spine of the programme, shows a scene from the Savoy cinema with the heads of the audience, on the left of the programme, looking up to a large screen which fills the page of the programme. The lush interior of the Savoy is referenced by the golden sheen of the bannister and the rich red-gold colours of the furnishing. The screen image fills the page – it depicts a rather louche couple gazing at each other intently. He has his arm around her waist as she sits close to him – head slightly lowered – her long eyelashes shielding her eyes. The back cover is a deep maroon colour. There is limited text and, at the centre of the page, there is a logo for the Cork Film Festival. A male figure appears to be running, holding up a flag in his left hand. As he runs he looks back at the long red flag fluttering behind him. The programme is a soft glue-bound programme measuring 21cm x 29.5cm with 136 numbered pages.
