Nicholas was a founding member of the London Friends of Cork and often hosted events at the Martini Terrace in London for the festival. The 1980 film festival programme notes that this group of London-based film people raised thousands of pounds to help the development of the Cork festival. Nicholas went on to become Managing Director of Columbia-EMI-Warner Distributors. Cornelius ('Con') Howard (1925-2009) was a founding member of the Merriman Summer School in addition to his career as a diplomat. He was attached to the Irish embassies in both London and Washington during his tenure. It is noted that by all accounts he was an affable and skillful diplomat despite not achieving more recognition for his work. The convivial group, all dressed in evening wear, stretch out across the expanse of the stage and appear to be singing – we might hazard a guess that they are singing Auld Lang Syne and if so this might be the closing ceremony of the festival. We recognise some of the group to include festival committee members Dermot Breen and Gus Healy. We also identify the mustachioed British actor Simon Williams, and Jean Alexandria, who was a well-known British television actor during the 1970s. The Irish comedian and actor Niall Tóibín is noted in the middle of the group. Tóibín was born in Cork in 1929, on the northside of the City. He would go on to have an illustrious stage and film career including parts in Ryan’s Daughter (David Lean, 1970), Far And Away (Ron Howard, 1992), and Veronica Guerin (Joel Schumacher, 2003). The group of four suited men are mid-conversation; Lynch is glancing towards Breen who is looking directly at the lens of the camera. Jack Lynch (1917-1999) was born in Shandon, Cork, and went to school in the North Mon. By all accounts Lynch was a great sportsman and would credit sport with teaching him how to be part of a team and how to cope with victory and defeat. Lynch worked as parliamentary secretary for Eamon de Valera and succeeded Sean Lemass in 1966. He helped Ireland to usher in full membership of the European Economic Community whose application had been on the EEC table since 1961. Lynch was the Leader of Fianna Fáil from 1966 to 1979 and the Leader of the Opposition from 1973 to 1977. He would serve Ireland as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. In Cork, we have named a tunnel that runs under the River Lee after Jack Lynch. The Jack Lynch Tunnel opened in 1999 and eases traffic congestion in the City by diverting traffic under the River, via an immersed tube tunnel, connecting motorways North, West, and East. The four men are all wearing dinner suits accessorised with a bow tie and some decorated with a festival ribbon. We see from the archive that Marcus was presented the Waterford Crystal Award in 1975, for the best Irish film, by Miss Movie Girl Mary Tilson which helps us date this photo. The award was made by the film critics attending the festival and was aimed at encouraging Irish film making and also Government and industrial sponsorship of film making in Ireland. Marcus was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1974 for Children at Work (Páisti ag Obair), and in 1976 he was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 48th Academy Awards for Conquest of Light. Conquest of Light detailed how Waterford Glass is made with an emphasis on the aesthetic nature of the process. His first documentary, <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art</a> (1958), on his friend the Cork-born sculptor, Seamus Murphy (1907-1975), was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1959 - the same year that Mise Eire (Seoirse Mac Giolla Mhuire) premiered. Marcus often sat on the festival jury, and the 1979 film festival programme notes that Marcus, a member of the shorts jury that year, was “prominent in the efforts to get Government support for Irish film making, so far largely without success.” Pearse Wyse (1928-2009), at the left of the photo, was a Fianna Fáil politician who would serve as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1967 and again in 1974. A firm supporter of Jack Lynch he was a formidable opponent of Charles Haughey and was a member of the so-called ‘Gang of 22’. Disillusioned with Fianna Fáil he went on to found the Progressive Democrats where he held a seat as a TD in the 1987 and 1989 elections. Cusack has a prolific stage and film career including parts in Hoffman (Alvin Rakoff, 1970) with Peter Sellers, Stealing Beauty (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1996) and John Boorman’s Queen and Country (2014). Queen and Country had its première at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014 and its Irish première at the Cork Film Festival that year. The delegates, all men in dark suits, are seated in front of large curtain drapes. We note the back of the conductor, in the orchestra pit below, and the young faces of seated musicians partially hidden by floral arrangments. The Fine Gael Lord Mayor, Timothy J O’Sullivan, was Lord Mayor of Cork during 1971-1972 which helps us date this photo. We notice the dark-haired English screenwriter, Wolf Mankowitz, seated behind the Lord Mayor, wearing a dark polo neck top under his suit. Mankowitz moved to Cork in 1971 to avail of Charles Haughey’s generous tax policy towards artists. In 1972 Mankowitz wrote and directed The Hebrew Lesson starring Milo O’Shea, Patrick Dawson, and Harry Towb. It was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1972. We recognise festival committee members and friends including Gus Healy, Peter Barry, Gerry Jones (with eye-patch), along with Lord Mayor Pearse Wyse at the left of the photo – hands clasped behind his back. Wyse served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1967 and again in 1974. He stands next to the Irish filmmaker Louis Marcus who is holding the Waterford Crystal Award which was awarded for the best Irish film. His first documentary <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art </a>(1958), on his friend the Cork-born sculptor, Seamus Murphy (1907-1975), is of particular interest to us as Murphy designed the bronze St Finbarr statuette that was presented to prize winners at the festival for some years. In this photo we see two delegates holding the statuette as designed by Murphy. We note that one of the award recipients, Gerry Duffy, was Manager of 20th Century Fox in Ireland and received his award on behalf of the screenwriter Alvin Sargent for The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds (Paul Newman, 1972). The picture also includes Gerry O'Halloran - who might be the tall man wearing a light-coloured jacket standing behind a low-sized Gus Healy. O'Halloran was from the British Film Institute and participated in workshops for the festival.
