He directed two horror feature films during the 1970s: They Have Changed Their Face (1971) and Baba Yaga (1973). The American actor Carroll Baker, who was in Cork in the same year as Farina, played the part of ‘Baba Yaga’ – a middle-aged seductress who ultimately controls the main character Valentina, played by Isabelle De Funès, through a doll that she gives her. Baba Yaga was based on the graphic stories written by the Italian Guido Crepax who is famous for his ‘Valentina’ series of books. Crepax is also a keen wargamer and is the author of the first wargames to be published in Italy. Jane Asher, on the left of the photo, is an English actor, writer and businesswoman with a particular interest in baking. She has worked in film, theatre, radio and television since she was a young child. Her filmography includes the under-rated Deep End (Jerzy Skolimowksi, 1970) (with music by Cat Stevens), Alfie (Lewis Gilbert, 1966) with Michael Caine, and the British sitcom The Old Guys. At the time of this picture, marked 1972, Asher starred in Henry VIII and His Six Wives (Waris Huessein, 1972) where she played the part of Jane Seymour. Asher is a shareholder in the magazine Private Eye and has written many books including best-selling novels and lifestyle books. Born in Dublin she is the daughter of the actor Maureen Cusack and the actor Cyril Cusack. Most recently she was the winner of the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Actress for Our Few and Evil Days in 2015. They are probably at the Harp Lager-sponsored festival club and, as with the convivial crowd around them, they drink and chat, cigarette in hand. Helen Shapiro, in a white blouse and embroidered top accessorised with a festival ribbon, was a singing sensation in her day. Born in East London in 1946, she was a British singer whose repertoire included the blues, jazz, gospel and pop music. By the age of 15 she was England’s top recording star with You Don’t Know and Walking Back to Happiness earning her two gold discs. She toured and performed with the Beatles; John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song Misery for her but her then-management refused to let her record it. Shapiro’s film career was brief and she played herself in Play It Cool (Michael Winner,1962) and the lead female role in Its Trad, Dad! directed by Richard Lester (1962) who went on to direct the Beatles’ film Hard Day’s Night (1964). Her stage career includes the West End play Oliver by Lionel Bart and the part of Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Later she toured with the British jazz trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton and his band between 1984 and 2001, as well as touring with her one-woman show Simply Shapiro. Shapiro published her autobiography Walking Back to Happiness in 1993. Ferdy Mayne, on the right, cigar in hand, faces Breen as they chat. A festival ribbon is pinned to the left lapel of his jacket. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career and achieved international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including head vampire in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate; Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968); and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams (who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo). Mayne later featured in Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with Hannelore Elsner, who also came to Cork around the same time as this photo. (While this photo is marked 1970 it is possibly 1972 based on other items in the archive.) His final film role was as General Karl von Weber in the neo-Nazi political thriller The Killers Within (Paul Leder, 1995) before he returned to England, where he died in 1998 following the onset of Parkinson’s Disease. Sir Alec Guinness (1914-2000) featured in many Ealing Comedies including Kind Heart and Coronets (Robert Hamer, 1949) where he played nine characters. His collaborations with the film director David Lean include Fagin in Oliver Twist (1948) and opposite William Holden in The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. He has made many television appearances including the role of George Smiley in the serialisation of two novels by John le Carré, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) and Smiley's People (1982). Most notably he is remembered for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in George Lucas' original Star Wars Trilogy for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The award itself is 31cm high including the base. The inscription across the base reads Cork International Film Festival Trophy by Seamus Murphy RHA. The award has inscriptions on its base of a Celtic harp and the Cork coat of arms. Later awards - molded from the original template - have the same inscriptions accompanied by the year of the festival. The sculptor Seamus Murphy was based at his studio on Watercourse Road in Blackpool, Cork. Murphy was inspired by the politician, writer, and academic Daniel Corkery, then a teacher at his school, to attend the Cork Crawford School of Art. After receiving a scholarship, Murphy later went to Paris to study under the Irish-American Sculptor Andrew O’Connor before returning to Cork and opening up his studio. Murphy was commissioned to design the Church of the Annunciation in Blackpool, Cork, as well several unique carvings around the City and beyond. Seventy-five examples of his monuments can be seen in the cemetery of St Finn Barre’s Cathedral especially in ‘Musicians’ Corner’. A favourite City monument is his limestone drinking trough for dogs – marked Madraí; it is tucked away at the top of Patrick’s Street under a now empty shopfront at number 121. Designed by the Cork-born sculptor Seamus Murphy, the bronze-coloured representation of the saint is 31cm high including the base. The base in this image is faintly inscribed on its sides with a Celtic harp and the Cork coat of arms, along with the date of the festival. This award is inscribed 2009 Seamus Murphy, Naom Fionnbarra. The inscription across the base reads Cork International Film Festival Trophy by Seamus Murphy RHA.  The 1965 festival programme notes, in an article by Conor Sweeney, that the awards were used from the very beginning of the festival and that the silver and bronze awards were “lined up on Dermot’s desk”. Dermot Breen was the founder of the film festival and was its director from its inception in 1956 until his untimely death in 1978. It is dated December 1958 and depicts the St Finbarr bronze statuette. The base of the statuette in this image is engraved Féile Scannán Corcaige 1958 (Cork Film Festival). The greeting on the card is Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. The small type along its spine notes Seamus Murphy: St Finbarr (Bronze Statuette). First Prize at the Cork Film Festival 1958 to “The Bicyclist” (“Cyklisten”) produced for British Petroleum by A/S Nordisk Film Junior. Cyklisten (Henning Carlsen, 1958) was a 16 min. company film starring the prolific Danish actor Buster Larsen (1920-1993). Leigh, in a light-coloured wrap-over dress, is smiling broadly at the camera while Breen, with one arm on his hip, leans up against the wall behind her. Suzanna Leigh (1945-2017) was a British actor best known for her film and television work during the 1960s and 1970s. She was born Sandra Smith but was encouraged by Vivien Leigh (who was possibly her Godmother but not confirmed) to use her name in acting. Suzanna Leigh started acting at the age of 13 with Tom Thumb (George Pal, 1958) before working opposite Tony Curtis in Boeing Boeing (John Rich, 1965) and opposite Elvis Presley in Paradise, Hawaiian Style (Michael D Moore, 1966). She worked in several Hammer horror films, including The Deadly Bees (Freddie Francis, 1967) and Son of Dracula (Freddie Francis, 1974) with Ringo Starr, gaining her a cult following amongst horror fans. Suzanna Leigh is best known for her television and film roles, in particular her work with the film director Hall Wallis who directed her in Boeing, Boeing (John Rich, 1965) with Tony Curtis, and Paradise, Hawaiian Style (Michael D Moore, 1966) opposite Elvis Presley. She worked in several Hammer horror films, including The Deadly Bees (Freddie Francis, 1967) and Son of Dracula (Freddie Francis,1974) starring Ringo Starr. Her fellow actor in this picture, Virginia Wetherell, also worked in Hammer horror productions including Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde (Roy Ward Baker, 1971) and Demons of the Mind (Peter Sykes, 1972), both of which were released around the time of this picture when she came to visit the festival in 1972.
