Vida Breen was the wife of the film festival director, Dermot Breen, whom she married in 1952. In this picture Breen, wearing a light-coloured evening dress and matching jacket, is facing Massimo and smiling as he places a kiss on the back of her extended left hand. Vittorio Massimo was from the princely house of Massimo, historically one of the great aristocratic families of Rome and a major patron of the arts. Massimo is shown, wearing a light-coloured suit, laughing whilst bent over speaking into the microphone of the switchboard operator's headset. He is surrounded by an animated group of switchboard exchange operators, each with a headset hanging from around their necks. At the back of the photo, a caption note is attached stating that the image depicts the Prince telling the world about Dawn's request for a milk bath. His wife, the actor Dawn Addams, achieved notoriety in Cork that year for requesting a bath filled with milk at the Metropole Hotel; the request caused consternation and was turned down by the-then hotel manager, Douglas Vance. She went on to later admit that it was a publicity stunt dreamt up by her publicist. (We can date this photo as 1957 based on this incident.) Wearing a light-coloured summer dress accessorised with a coloured headband tied into her dark hair, Addams is facing the river and smiling as she casts the fishing rod overhead. On the ground by her feet lies an open tin-can probably used for bait. She might be reeling in the line as we can see a fish swinging at its end, while above in the clear sky a solitary gull passes over. Across the river, we can see a detached two-story building, originally the Christian Brother's School, located at the end of Sullivan's Quay. We can just make out the start of the inscription on the wall at the junction with Sober Lane: 'Founded A.D. 1828'. In the distance, on the far right, the Gothic spires of Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral rise above the horizon beyond the stone facade of the South Gate Bridge, which links the south side of Cork to the city centre. Dawn Addams (1930-1985) was an English actor whose work in Hollywood coincided with the early years of the Cork Film Festival. Born Victoria Dawn Addams in England she spent her early life in Calcutta, India after her Cork-born mother, Ethel Mary (née Hickie) passed away when she was a child. Her beauty and talent brought her to the attention of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios to whom she signed a seven-year contract in 1950. For the next two decades, she worked incessantly in film and television including the MGM films Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly, 1952), the then-controversial The Moon is Blue (Otto Preminger, 1953), A King in New York (Charlie Chaplin, 1957) which was screened at the Cork Film Festival that year, as well as the television series The Saint (1962-69) with Roger Moore as Simon Templar. Addams had a tumultuous personal life and her marriage to Prince Don Vittorio Emanuele Massimo of Roccasecca in 1954, when she was age 23 and he 43, was the subject of a cover story in Life magazine. She separated from Prince Massimo some four years later although divorce was not granted by the Italian courts until 1971 after which she married Jimmy White. In this picture Preminger, in a dark suit and bow-tie, is walking purposefully towards the cinema accompanied by two others. A small crowd gathers around Preminger and entourage, and a young girl is caught at the kerb-side looking back over her left shoulder towards the camera. She is wearing a light-coloured dress and a dark jacket, her short hair tousled by the wind. Further behind Preminger, we can see a slice of life on the main thoroughfare that is Patrick Street. Directly behind him, in the distance on Winthrop Street, we can just about make out the crowds gathered outside the now shut Lee Cinema next door to the limestone façade of the Cash & Co. department store (now Brown Thomas). The Lee Cinema was closed in December 1920 after the 'Burning of Cork' and reopened in September 1921, finally shutting down in April 1989. Beyond the crowds, we can glimpse the Cork General Post Office at the junction of Winthrop Street and Oliver Plunkett Street. Winthrop Street was pedestrianised in the 1970s but in this picture we see how Patrick Street follows down Winthrop Street, passing the Lee Cinema which was so close to the Savoy Cinema. Otto Preminger (1905-1986) was born in Austria-Hungary but fled to Austria with his family after the breakout of the First World War. He went on to work for Fox in Los Angeles and was known for defying the censorship code of Hollywood with his controversial films. He directed Dawn Addams (who was also at the festival when this photo was taken in 1957) in The Moon is Blue (1953) which was nominated for three Oscars. All are dressed in formal evening wear with the men in dark suits and bow-ties and the women in evening wear. In particular, we notice the light-coloured off-the-shoulder gown of the English stage and film actor, Anna Neagle. Some of the others are identified as Chris Curran, Helen Wilcox, Tom McKenna, Karl McEnery, and the politician Gus Healy. Augustine ('Gus') Healy (1904-1987) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who would later serve Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. Anna Neagle is standing on his right. Neagle was the stage name of Dame Florence Marjorie Wilcox, DBE. She was a popular actor during the thirties, forties and fifties best known for playing many historical characters including Nell Gwyn in Nell Gwyn (Herbert Wilcox, 1934) and Let's Make Up (also known as Lilacs in the Spring) (Herbert Wilcox, 1954). Neagle was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1952 for her services to drama so would have been Dame Anna Neagle during her visit to Cork.
