Suzanna Leigh (1945-2017) was a British actor best known for her film and television work during the 1960s and 1970s. She was born Sandra Smith but was encouraged by Vivien Leigh (who was possibly her Godmother but not confirmed) to use her name in acting. Virginia Wetherell, standing on the far left wearing an ornately fashioned dress, worked in Hammer horror productions including Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde (Roy Ward Baker, 1971) and Demons of the Mind (Peter Sykes, 1972), both of which were released around the time she came to visit the Cork festival in 1972. She has a large body of television work throughout the 1960s to the 1980s, including the part Dyoni in the first Dalek story series of Doctor Who. Wetherell was married to the English actor Ralph Bates (1940-1991) who was educated in Trinity College Dublin and made his stage debut at the Gate Theatre in Dublin in Shaw’s You Never Can Tell in 1963. Suzanna Leigh, standing on the right in a light-coloured dress, also starred in Hammer horror films during the early seventies including The Deadly Bees (Freddie Francis, 1967) and Son of Dracula (Freddie Francis, 1974) starring Ringo Starr, earning her a cult following amongst horror fans. Her personal life was of great interest to the press of the day and her boyfriends included the actors Richard Harris, Steve McQueen, and Michael Caine. Leigh’s Hollywood career was cut short due to a union row about foreign actors in Hollywood and she would return to England. In 2000 she published her memoirs, Paradise, Suzanna Style, where she describes her encounters with various film stars and directors including Roman Polanski, Peter Finch and Otto Preminger - who also came to the Cork festival with his film St Joan (1957). Macdougald, her hair gathered in a chignon bun, is wearing a sash marked Miss Harp Ireland across her gingham and lace-trimmed dress. Suzanne Macdougald (1945-) was a celebrated Irish model during the 1960s and 1970s. She was one of a small cohort of models, including Ann Davis, Adrienne Ring, and Grace O’Shaughnessy, that would become well-known during this time working for the designers Ib Jorgensen and Sybil Connolly. The model Grace O’Shaughnessy also came to the Cork Film Festival during the 1960s. Macdougald worked as a hostess on RTÉ’s first quiz show Jackpot (1962-1965) assisting Terry Wogan who had replaced the original host Gay Byrne. She later set up the Lad Lane Gallery in Dublin before selling up and joining Solomon Gallery in Dublin’s Powerscourt Townhouse Centre, eventually becoming its owner and director. She is wearing a Glen-check jacket with a festival pin on the left lapel. She appears to be signing her name while many of the crowd, smiling, face upwards towards the light of the camera. Koscina (1933-1994) was born to a Greek father and Polish mother, and moved to Italy to live with her sister when she was a teenager. She had an extensive filmography including parts in mostly Italian genre movies including The Railroad Man (Pietro Germi, 1956) (which was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1956), Guendalina (Alberto Lattuada, 1957), and Hercules (Pietro Francisci, 1958) for which she gained international attention. She acted for Hollywood-produced movies on a few occasions including alongside Paul Newman in The Secret War of Harry Frigg (Jack Smight, 1968) and with Rock Hudson in Hornets' Nest (Franco Cirino, 1970). Before her work in film, she was a fashion model as well as a physics student at the University of Naples. Her final film appearance was in Kim Novak is on the Phone (Riki Roseo, 1994) before she died later that year from breast cancer.
