The Press Comments section of the 1959 Festival of Cork programme has an image of Badal being presented the award for the film Dreamroad of the World (Hans Domnick, 1958). Vasgen Badal (1891-1959) was an Iranian-German film producer of which there is little known. He moved to Germany from Tehran as a young man where he learned about film and set up the film company 'Badal-Filmproduktion' producing a number of films in the thirties and forties including a Nazi propaganda film Roter Nebel (UA, 1941) which was released after the German attack on the USSR in June 1941. The rear of the photo notes that the Scottish documentary maker John Grierson is one of the three men in the background looking on at the presentation. Grierson was a Scottish documentary maker who coined the term 'documentary' in a review of Robert J. Flaherty's Moana (1926). He was jury president of the festival in 1958 and, in 1972, the prestigious Grierson Awards were set up to commemorate his life and contribution to documentary film. Purcell, with his trademark beard, and hands clasped before him, is looking at the microphone as if in conversation or mid-speech. Breen is looking up at Purcell on the right. Purcell was a regular visitor to the festival and there are many images of him in the archive. He was born in Dublin in 1900 and started out as a schoolboy working at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin. Well known for his stagecraft Purcell would later appear in the first sound film version of The Blue Lagoon (Frank Launder, 1949), and has a large filmography including parts in Moby Dick (John Huston, 1956), Mutiny on the Bounty (Lewis Milestone, 1962), and The Mackintosh Man (1973) directed by John Huston. He was married to Eileen Marmion who was also a stage performer who performed all over Ireland and the UK. Noel Purcell died in 1985, age 85, and his wife Marmion died, age 100, in 2018. Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Italian film director and actor Vittorio De Sica leaving the Savoy cinema, Cork. Above De Sica we see posters advertising the comedy film Cannon Serenade (Wolfgang Staudte, 1958) in which De Sica starred as the captain of a small coastal freighter fitted with a little cannon in case of enemy attack during World War II. Born in Naples De Sica came from a poor family and as a young man worked as an actor. De Sica was considered a successful matinee idol of the Italian theatre and movies before turning to directing in 1940. His success with The Children Are Watching Us (De Sica, 1944), Shoeshine (De Sica, 1946) and Bicycle Thieves (De Sica, 1948) established him as one of the great Italian directors of all time. In particular Bicycle Thieves - an neo-realist drama which considered the poverty of post-war Italy - won a special honorary Oscar before the foreign film category was officially established. In this photo we also see a poster advertising his personal appearance at the Savoy that evening. Crowds gather around him on the right and left of the marble steps of the cinema. Sporting a dark mustache, De Sica is dressed in a dinner suit accessorised with a bow-tie and is looking down as he steps forward. To his front a cinema usher, wearing a two-piece suit with a long coat decorated with gilt buttons down its front, escorts the director down the steps. Ushers were known as 'commisionaires' in the early days of the Savoy and while the usher in this photo is not identified, John McSweeney notes in his book on the Golden Age of Cork Cinemas (2013), that there was a well known head usher called John ('Johnno') O'Connell from Blarney Street in Cork who worked at the Savoy during the early days of its existence. Title A name given to the resource Danish film critic Bjørn Rasmussen Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Bjørn Rasmussen, Denmark Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the pioneering film critic Bjørn Rasmussen. In this photo, marked 1958, Rasmussen is seated at a desk speaking into a microphone. He rests his hands, folded over each other, on the crook of a wooden walking stick and is caught in mid-conversation glancing upwards. He is dressed in a light-coloured suit with a white shirt, with the collar of the shirt and tie slightly askew. The 1958 festival programme includes a profile of Rasmussen, along with the president of the jury, John Grierson, producer Joy Batchelor and MGM manager Douglas King. Born in 1918, Rasmussen was known for a long-running television series, Filmorientering, and Filmkronik, a film review programme. He taught film studies at the University of Copenhagen and was the head of the International Jury for the 21st Berlin Film Festival in 1971. That year the Golden Bear for best film was awarded to The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini) directed by Vittorio De Sica who was a frequent visitor to the Cork festival in its early years.  Rasmussen died the following year in 1972, age 54. Title A name given to the resource Dermot Breen, Donal Crosbie, John Grierson and Vasgen Badal Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Dermot Breen, Donal Crosbie, John Grierson, Vasgen Badal Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo, marked 1958, of Dermot Breen, Donal Crosbie, John Grierson and the Iranian-German film producer Vasgen Badal sitting together at a table in conversation. The festival director Dermot Breen, with his back to us, is leaning on the table with his right arm, listening to Crosbie and Badal. Grierson, with his distinctive dark-framed glasses, sits at the rear of the group drawing deeply on his cigarette. They are all wearing festival pins on the left lapels of their jackets and have papers strewn on the table before them, along with empty glasses and an ash-filled ashtray. Vasgen Badal was born in 1891, in Tehran, and little is known about him. He was based in Germany and produced a series of films starring popular screen stars including Magda Schneider and Heinz Rühmann who also came to the Cork Film Festival. In 1958 Badal was presented with a statuette of St. Finbarr by Jack Lynch for the film Dreamroad of the World (Hans Domnick, 1958) under his film company 'Badal-Filmproduktion'. He produced a number of films in the thirties and forties including a Nazi propaganda film Roter Nebel (UA, 1941) which was released after the German attack on the USSR in June 1941. Vasgen Badal died in 1959 - a year after this photo was taken. As so little is known about him we are fortunate to have images of him in the archive.  John Grierson was a Scottish documentary maker who coined the term 'documentary' in a review of Robert Flaherty's Moana (1926). Grierson founded the National Film Board of Canada (NFBC) in 1939 and worked there until his resignation in 1945. He lectured at Carleton and McGill University and his lectures at McGill University would attract up to seven hundred students for his classes. In his time Grierson sat on many film festival juries including Cannes, Venice, and Oberhausen; he was jury president in Cork in 1958 when this picture was taken. Grierson died in 1972 and was cremated and his urn, along with that of his brother who had died the previous year, was placed in the sea off the Old Head in Kinsale, County Cork. The now-prestigious Grierson Award, set up in 1972 by the Grierson Trust and UK Film Council, commemorate his life and contribution to documentary film and is awarded annually. Marked 1962 the photo identifies four of the revellers to be the actor Ronnie Shiner, the local businessman Donal Crosbie, Norma Crosbie and Edmond Purdom, an English actor, voice artist, and director. The room is packed with a well-dressed crowd in the midst of a sing-song and includes, at the back of the room by the wooden door, three uniformed Gardaí. At the centre of the photo, we can make out the distinctive profile of the British actor Ronald Shiner with his arms raised. Known as ‘Ronnie’, Shiner (1903-1966) was a British stand-up comedian and comedy actor who worked on stage, television and film. A career highlight included the stage version of Worm’s Eye View (1945 to 1947) followed by a film version in 1952 with Diana Dors. In 1962, around the time this photo was taken, he had made a TV version of Worm’s Eye View for the BBC. Shiner was the subject of This is Your Life in 1958 when he was surprised by Eamon Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre. Based on photographs in Roy Hammond's own book, Media Memories of Cork (1994), we have reason to that one of the obscured figures is that of Mexican actress Linda Christian. Purdom and Christian were married to each other for the short period of 1962-1963 and so they would have been a couple at the time of this visit to Cork. The party is taking place in the MacCurtain Street Garda Station which was located at 58 MacCurtain Street. It was originally a house built c.1830 before its use as a Garda station and constabulary barracks. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage describes it as a terraced three-bay four-storey former house, over basement, as a pair with the adjoining former house to the west. A flight of limestone steps, framed by cast-iron railings, lead to a round-headed door opening. The station was closed in 2013, as part of a programme of Garda station closures around Ireland.
