The undated photo notes that the association of London friends was founded by Bernard McDonagh, a committee member of the London Film Society. Born in 1934, Sylvia Syms has a prolific film and television career. Her second film My Teenage Daughter (Herbert Wilcox, 1956) also starred Anna Neagle who was a visitor to the festival when My Teenage Daughter opened at the Savoy in 1956. Her films include Brendan Behan’s The Quare Fellow (Arthur Dreifuss, 1962), The Tamarind Seed (Blake Edwards, 1974) with Julie Andrews and Omar Sharif, Absolute Beginners (Julien Temple, 1986) with David Bowie and Patsy Kensit, and as the Queen Mother in The Queen (Stephen Frears, 2006) with Helen Mirren. Her television work includes Thatcher: The Final Days (Granada Television, 1991) where she starred as Margaret Thatcher. Her daughter Beatrice Edney (1962-) is also an English actor with many film and television appearances including Highlander (1986, 2000), Inspector Morse (1989), Lewis (2013), and Poldark (2015-2019). The panel is part of a 1970 symposium for the Cork Film Festival. The five panellists are sitting in a semi-circle on the stage in front of long-armed microphones, and include an unidentified priest on the far right sitting next to Long. Jugs of water and ashtrays are placed on the wooden tables in front of them and they all appear to be listening attentively to a speaker off-camera. Bunny Carr is sitting on the far left, hands folded at his chin, looking to his left across the stage. Born in Dublin, Bernard ‘Bunny’ Carr (1927-2018) was a popular RTÉ television presenter during the 1960s and 1970s. He also founded Carr Communications which is said to have trained six of Ireland’s Taoisigh (prime ministers). However it is as a television host of popular television shows that he is fondly remembered including, Teen Talk, The Politicians, Going Strong, and most famously the quizmaster of Quicksilver, where he was accompanied by the musical cues of organist Norman Metcalfe, which made its debut in 1965. (‘Bunny the man who stopped the lights – then showed politicians how to deal with life in spotlight’, Irish Times, 21.09.2018.)  Wolf Mankowitz (1924-1998), sitting on the right in this picture wearing a white shirt, with a cigarette in hand, was an award-winning English screenwriter and author known for his novels, plays and screenplays. He was of Jewish descent, born in the East End of London. However, following altercations with the English revenue, he moved to Ireland to avail of Charles Haughey’s generous tax policy towards artists and settled in Cork in 1971. Mankowitz was a successful screenwriter in the 1950s and wrote screenplays for his own works and adapted others including A Kid for Two Farthings (Carol Reed, 1953) and The Millionairess (Anthony Asquith, 1960) starring Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers. He was one of the screenwriters on the first James Bond film Dr No (Terence Young, 1962) but asked for his name to be removed from the credits as he thought it poor; he also collaborated on the Bond movie Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 1976). In 1972 Mankowitz wrote and directed The Hebrew Lesson, starring Milo O’Shea, Patrick Dawson and Harry Towb (who also appears in this archive). Set in Cork in 1921, during the War of Independence, it is about the friendship between an IRA man escaping pursuit from the Black and Tans, and an elderly man at a synagogue. He wrote the screenplay having being told the story about an IRA man hiding in a small synagogue in Dublin’s Lennox Street and it was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1972. Interestingly the Guardian newspaper reported that the British M15 kept a security file on Mankowitz for more than a decade suspecting that he was a possible communist agent following his marriage to Ann Seligmann, in 1944, as she was a communist party member. The investigation was dropped when the M15 informant insisted that Mankowitz’s leftwing sympathies had disappeared noting that “He comes to the college every morning with a copy of the Times.” (Alan Travis, The Guardian, 26.08.2010.) The three panellists, sitting at a table in front of long-armed microphones, include the English writer James Mitchell, the Irish actor Joe Tomelty, and the English screenwriter Michael Pertwee. Joseph Tomelty, sitting at the centre, was an Irish character actor, novelist and playwright known for his radio and stage work. He was a frequent visitor to the Cork festival, as far back as 1960, when that years programme noted that Tomelty presented awards to recipients in the presence of the then Lord Mayor of Cork Stephen Barrett. Tomelty was born in County Down, and was based in Northern Ireland where he made a significant contribution to its cultural history. Tomelty was instrumental in founding and managing the Group Theatre in Belfast in 1940 where his plays would be staged - apart from the controversial The End House (1944) which was premiered at the Abbey Theatre because Northern theatres wouldn't show it at the time. He wrote comedy dramas for the BBC, in particular The McCooeys which lasted seven years. Tomelty’s film work includes Odd Man Out (Carol Reed, 1947), and Moby Dick (John Huston, 1956) with Gregory Peck and the Irish actor Noel Purcell, but it was for his enduring commitment to the North of Ireland that he is fondly remembered.   Michael Pertwee, sitting on the far right of the photo, was an English playwright and screenwriter born in 1916. He comes from a prolific family of actors including his father, the actor and playwright Roland Pertwee, his brother the actor Jon Pertwee, best known for his Dr.Who, and his nephew the actor Sean Pertwee. As well as TV work, Michael Pertwee’s screenwriting credits include Richard Lester’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966) and One More Time (Jerry Lewis, 1970) starring Sammy Davis Jr. At the time of this photo he had just finished Digby, the Biggest Dog in the World (Joseph McGrath, 1973) with Spike Milligan and the Irish actor Milo O’Shea. The photo also identifies the writer James Mitchell on the far left, cigarette in hand raised towards his mouth. Born in the North of England, Mitchell (1926-2002) was a prolific writer writing under his own name and the pen-names James Munro and Patrick O McGuire. Mitchell wrote over 70 novels, mostly crime fiction and spy thrillers, and 100 television scripts. He will be remembered best for the successful television series Callan (Thames Television) and When the Boat Comes In (BBC) which ran between 1976 and 1981. Around the time of this photo, dated 1972, Mitchell had just completed Callan (1969-1972) starring Edward Woodward as the secret agent and hitman David Callan. The series went on to spawn novels, short stories, the film Callan (Don Sharp, 1974), and a TV movie Wet Job (1981) directed by Shaun O’Riordan. Interestingly, the full name of O’Riordan, who was born in Sri Lanka in 1927, is Shaun Stuart Harry Daniel O’Connell O’Riordan. O'Riordan also starred in the long-running popular British television sitcom The Larkins (1958-1964), playing the part of Eddie Larkin alongside the actors Margaret Rose Mount and David Kossoff, both of whom came to the Cork festival during the 1960s. In 1974 Mitchell served on the Shorts Jury for the Short Film Competition alongside Bernard Blin (France), Bill Starr (USA), Kevin Marron (Ireland), and Noel Ryan (Ireland). Title A name given to the resource Taoiseach Jack Lynch and Lord Mayor Seán Casey Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Taoiseach, Jack Lynch, Lord Mayor, Seán Casey Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Lord Mayor Seán Casey walking with Jack Lynch who would have been Taoiseach at the time of this photo in 1966. They walk down a narrow corridor closely flanked either side by young sea cadets in full uniform. This is a rare photo of Seán Casey in the archive; he was an Irish Labour Party politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork on three occasions: in 1956, 1962, and 1966 as in this photo. He was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Labour Party TD for Cork on four occasions before his untimely death in 1967, age 45. He had a memorable meeting with President John F Kennedy in 1963 when the President came to Cork. They travelled to the Cork City Hall in an open-top car and he gave a speech of which Kennedy noted “Once again I’m reminded that the Irish have not lost their ability to speak.” Within four years of their meeting both President Kennedy and Seán Casey would be dead. ('The Proud Son', Irish Independent, 15.06.2013) In this photo Casey walks alongside local man, Jack Lynch, who was born in Cork in 1917. Lynch went to school in the North Mon and his sporting prowess encouraged employers to take him on. He started off working with the Civil Service in Cork before training to be a lawyer and moving to Dublin to work at the District Court, alongside playing for the Dublin Football Club who won their first Dublin Senior Football Club Championship in 1944 on his timely arrival. Lynch was called to the bar and left the Civil Service in 1945 before being approached to declare for Fianna Fail in the 1946 by-election in Cork. He declined as his friend ‘Pa’ McGrath was standing (McGrath features in this archive on a number of occasions) but it instigated an interest in politics for Lynch who would contest elections for the coming years and work successfully with McGrath in the Dáil. Lynch would go on to serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. He was involved in the dismissal of four ministers during the Arms Trial of May 1970, including Charles Haughey, Neil Blaney, Kevin Boland and Michael Moran. (Gerry Jones, a witness in the trail, also features in our archive). Presciently he noted that one of the difficulties dealing with the British is that they are not very well acquainted with the issue of the North and he tried to address it with the British Prime Minister Edward Heath in 1971. Lynch loved sport and would credit it with teaching him how to be part of a team and how to cope with victory and defeat. Sophia Loren’s actual link with the film festival is one of association rather than presence. Sophia Loren came to the archive, in 1956, at the behest of Mr Dermot Breen, the original organiser of the festival. We might guess that he invited Loren to the first Cork Film Festival in early 1956 – an invitation that she politely declined by this telegram in May of that year. The short truncated text was typical of this medium which charged according to the word count. Seemingly Oscar Wilde sent the shortest telegram in history to his publisher when asking about how his book was doing the message read “?”. The publisher replied with “!”. In the pre-internet age telegrams were a thriving form of communication and transatlantic messages were sent via cable from Valentia Island in Kerry. However with the advent of technology they are no longer in use in Ireland and the final telegram was sent in 1977. We note also that Loren was awarded, in absentia, the Waterford Glass Trophy for outstanding acting performance at the 1961 Cork Film Festival. The convivial group are shown in a huddle in conversation; Gilliam and his companions are sitting on a table resting up against the wall while Sheamus Smith, arms folded, stands and listens to them. Smith was a producer and director at RTÉ around the time of this photo (1970s) before being appointed managing director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975. He was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board and was later appointed Irish film censor, going on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State from 1986 to 2002. Smith published his memoir Off Screen (Gill & MacMillan) in 2007. We know Terry Gilliam as part of the Monty Python troupe and the long-running BBC sketch comedy Monty Python’s Flying Circus (1969-1974), which relied heavily on his surreal animation skills. Around the time of this photo in the 1970s, Gilliam had co-directed Monty Python and the Holy Grail (with Terry Jones, 1975) and soon after directed Jabberwocky (1977), based on Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll, and starring Michael Palin. He has been nominated a number of times for an Academy Award for Brazil (1985), The Fisher King (1991), 12 Monkeys (1995), and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). Linda Hayden, on the far left of the photo in a knitted halter-neck dress, and holding a cigarette, came to Cork on a number of occasions and often features in the festival archive photographed with fellow actor Lynda Bellingham, with whom she starred in a series of Confessions movies based on the series of risqué best-selling paperback books by Christopher Wood. Co-produced by Greg Smith and the Irish director Norman Cohen they include Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen,1977) which starred both Bellingham and Hayden. She also appeared in horror movies including Hammer’s Taste the Blood of Dracula (Peter Sasdy,1970) starring Christopher Lee, and The Blood on Satan’s Claw (Piers Haggard, 1971). The small convivial group is turned towards each other smiling as they chat. Laurence Harvey (1928-1973) died from cancer the year after this picture was taken. He was a Lithuanian-born English actor and director and has a prolific filmography. Around the time this image was taken he had starred in Escape to the Sun (Menahem Golan, 1972) and The Deep (Orson Welles, 1970) which was an unfinished film directed by Orson Welles. When Harvey died in 1973 it ended any chance of Welles finishing the picture.
