Purcell, at the centre, is leaning forward, with a mock-startled look on his face, while his greying beard is being tweaked. The photo notes two names at the back of the photo - that of  Roy Hammond and Stephen Coughlan. We recognise the work of Roy Hammond throughout this archive as his studio stamp graces the back of many photos. He was a photojournalist for the Cork Examiner and before that the Irish Press. Originally from England Hammond moved to Cork after meeting, and marrying, his wife Rose Sheppard from Albert Road, Cork City, setting up a photography studio at 33 St Patrick’s Street. Hammond was an army photographer during World War II and would later work for the Imperial War Crimes Commission in Berlin. As well as his work as a press photographer for the Cork Examiner Hammond was a cameraman for RTÉ until his retirement in 1992. On his death in 1996 the Examiner obituary noted: "Roy covered all the major stories, both in Cork and nationally, he covered nearly every major story you could think of, he was a great newsman and a thorough gentleman." Title A name given to the resource Taoiseach Jack Lynch and Lord Mayor Seán Casey Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Taoiseach, Jack Lynch, Lord Mayor, Seán Casey Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Lord Mayor Seán Casey walking with Jack Lynch who would have been Taoiseach at the time of this photo in 1966. They walk down a narrow corridor closely flanked either side by young sea cadets in full uniform. This is a rare photo of Seán Casey in the archive; he was an Irish Labour Party politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork on three occasions: in 1956, 1962, and 1966 as in this photo. He was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Labour Party TD for Cork on four occasions before his untimely death in 1967, age 45. He had a memorable meeting with President John F Kennedy in 1963 when the President came to Cork. They travelled to the Cork City Hall in an open-top car and he gave a speech of which Kennedy noted “Once again I’m reminded that the Irish have not lost their ability to speak.” Within four years of their meeting both President Kennedy and Seán Casey would be dead. ('The Proud Son', Irish Independent, 15.06.2013) In this photo Casey walks alongside local man, Jack Lynch, who was born in Cork in 1917. Lynch went to school in the North Mon and his sporting prowess encouraged employers to take him on. He started off working with the Civil Service in Cork before training to be a lawyer and moving to Dublin to work at the District Court, alongside playing for the Dublin Football Club who won their first Dublin Senior Football Club Championship in 1944 on his timely arrival. Lynch was called to the bar and left the Civil Service in 1945 before being approached to declare for Fianna Fail in the 1946 by-election in Cork. He declined as his friend ‘Pa’ McGrath was standing (McGrath features in this archive on a number of occasions) but it instigated an interest in politics for Lynch who would contest elections for the coming years and work successfully with McGrath in the Dáil. Lynch would go on to serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. He was involved in the dismissal of four ministers during the Arms Trial of May 1970, including Charles Haughey, Neil Blaney, Kevin Boland and Michael Moran. Presciently he noted that one of the difficulties dealing with the British is that they are not very well acquainted with the issue of the North and he tried to address it with the British Prime Minister Edward Heath in 1971. Lynch loved sport and would credit it with teaching him how to be part of a team and how to cope with victory and defeat. We can see how the vagaries of his life fluctuated as with any match and his is a legacy that prevails in the history of Cork and beyond. Title A name given to the resource St Finbarr statuette Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, St Finbarr Statuette, Award, Trophy, Seamus Murphy Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the St Finbarr statuette that was designed by the Cork-born sculptor Seamus Murphy. The award itself is 31cm high including the base. The inscription across the base reads Cork International Film Festival Trophy by Seamus Murphy RHA. The award has inscriptions on its base of a Celtic harp and the Cork coat of arms. Later awards - molded from the original template - have the same inscriptions accompanied by the year of the festival. The sculptor Seamus Murphy was based at his studio on Watercourse Road in Blackpool, Cork. Murphy was inspired by the politician, writer, and academic Daniel Corkery, then a teacher at his school, to attend the Cork Crawford School of Art. After receiving a scholarship, Murphy later went to Paris to study under the Irish-American Sculptor Andrew O’Connor before returning to Cork and opening up his studio. Murphy was commissioned to design the Church of the Annunciation in Blackpool, Cork, as well several unique carvings around the City and beyond. Seventy-five examples of his monuments can be seen in the cemetery of St Finn Barre’s Cathedral especially in ‘Musicians’ Corner’. A favourite City monument is his limestone drinking trough for dogs – marked Madraí; it is tucked away at the top of Patrick’s Street under a now empty shopfront at number 121. Designed by the Cork-born sculptor Seamus Murphy, the bronze-coloured representation of the saint is 31cm high including the base. The base in this image is faintly inscribed on its sides with a Celtic harp and the Cork coat of arms, along with the date of the festival. This award is inscribed 2009 Seamus Murphy, Naom Fionnbarra. The inscription across the base reads Cork International Film Festival Trophy by Seamus Murphy RHA.  The 1965 festival programme notes, in an article by Conor Sweeney, that the awards were used from the very beginning of the festival and that the silver and bronze awards were “lined up on Dermot’s desk”. Dermot Breen was the founder of the film festival and was its director from its inception in 1956 until his untimely death in 1978. Title A name given to the resource Russian film director Stanislav Rostotsky and others Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Stanislav Rostotsky, Russia, Dermot Breen, Nina Menshikova Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Russian director Stanislav Rostotsky with festival director Dermot Breen and two unidentified female colleagues. The small convivial group, all dressed in evening wear, stand together smoking and laughing. The photo is dated provisionally ‘1970s’ and notes that the lady wearing a floral high-necked dress, at the far left, is a ‘Russian actor’. Stanislav Rostotsky, standing on the far right, was a Soviet film director and screenwriter. Born to a Russian-Polish family in 1922, Rostotsky served as a photojournalist for the Red Army before becoming a film director. He directed more than 12 motion pictures between 1955 and 1989 – often with war as a running theme. Rostotsky served as President of the Moscow International Film Festival on a number of occasions until his retirement from the film industry after his final film in 1989 (From the Life of Fyodor Kuzkin) stating that he had nothing left to say. The 1967 Cork Film Festival programme notes that the festival showed Rostotsky’s film Bela (1966) that year. Two of his later films - The Dawns Here Are Quiet (1972) and White Bim Black Ear (1977) - were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The unidentified Russian actor in this photo might be his wife, the Russian actor Nina Menshikova (1928-2007). She had a prolific film career but acted in only one of Rostotsky’s films: We’ll Live Till Monday (1968). She was the mother of the Russian actor Andrei Rostotsky born in 1957. Like his father, Andrei too served in the Soviet Army before becoming an actor and director. He died in 2002 following a climbing accident while shooting his new film My Frontier.
