The girls, in matching red frocks accessorised with a white headband, line up with the boys, in their black trousers and white shirts, across the chancel of the altar. The back of the photo notes that the children sitting on the chairs at the front of the choir are the young Donal Lehane and Grainne Breen – the daughter of the festival founder Dermot Breen and his wife Vida. This image is one of the few colour photographs in the archive and provides us with a beautiful rendition of the notable mosaic interior of the church. The mosaics were designed by the Italian artist Umberto Noni who counted his work at this church as one of his most accomplished creations. His head is lowered as he attends to the signing, his distinctive dark hair swept to the right with sideburns framing his lowered face. A few children look towards the camera and catch its attention. Bernard Geary (1934-) is a Cork musician, composer, and teacher, born in Gurranabraher where his parents ran a grocery shop. He studied music at the University College Cork during the 1950s and was encouraged in his compositions by Professor Aloys Fleischmann. His early compositions include work for the RTÉ String Quartet (String Quartet No.1, 1960), the Cork Symphony Orchestra (Provocation, 1960), and the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra (Amran Dochais, 1963) as well as vocal and choral works and incidental music for radio. Geary composed a nine-movement Mass of Saint Finbarr for tenor, choir, and organ in 1973 which was first performed at the Church of St. Francis in Cork with Kevin Owens as a soloist and the Cork Film Festival Choir. It was commissioned by the Cork Film Festival and we might imagine that this photo is probably taken after the premiere of the Mass in June of that year. Given this, while this photo is marked ‘1970s’ we might pin its date down to 1973 or 1974 when he also conducted his mass for the festival. In 1975 Geary conducted the Mass of Saint Patrick which was composed by Philip Green. Geary was commissioned to compose Celebration of Cork for the opening of Cork 800 in 1985 which marked the anniversary of the founding of the city. The work was based on texts drawn from various writings including Edmund Spenser, Seán Ó Faoláin, and the Cork poet Father Prout (Francis Sylvester O’Mahony) and was revived for the Cork Choral Festival in 2018 (David Wright, wrightmusic.net; Cathy Desmond, Cork Examiner, 17.04.2018). Flags of the participating countries adorn the building in a daytime street scene. A group of boys on the left of the picture face the camera, just about to cross the street. Behind them, bicycles lay strewn on the pavement and besides them, two cars are parked at the kerb-side. To the right of the Savoy, we can see the old façade of the Irish Tourist Bureau (Oifig Fáilte). Amongst the cinema posters on display, we can just make out posters advertising the appearance of the German actor Claus Holm (1918-1996) and the German screenwriter and director Bernhard Grzimek (1909-1987) who was the director of the documentary Serengeti Shall Not Die (Grzimek, 1959). It won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1960. The Savoy cinema was opened on 12th May 1932 by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Frank J. Wallace with a screening of Peach O'Reno (William A. Seiter, 1931). It could hold 2,242 patrons and boasted an Art Deco façade. In his book on Irish Cinemas, Jim Keenan noted the Savoy had an "ornate 'atmospheric' auditorium, which, like the Savoy in Dublin, was designed to resemble a street scene in Venice... Small lights set into the ceiling of the auditorium were designed to create the illusion that the audience was seated outdoors at night beneath the stars. Title A name given to the resource Theo Dorgan and friend at Cork Airport Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Theo Dorgan, Cork Airport Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the poet Theo Dorgan with an unidentified companion at Cork Airport. They are both sheltering from the rain under a Ford-sponsored umbrella in front of the old terminal of Cork Airport. Prior to the arrival of Cork Airport over-seas visitors travelled to the festival on the Dublin-Cork train. The Irish actor David Kelly, recalling the train journey from Dublin to Cork, noted: "Irish hospitality was at its finest on that train, an elegant Orient Express atmosphere wrapped in a thoroughly Celtic welcome that made strangers who got on in Dublin lifelong friends by the time it arrived in Cork. Revelry and romance are the two words that come mostly to mind when I recall the journey." (John Daly, Irish Examiner, 04.11.2017) However, the arrival of the airport in 1961 was seen as a great opportunity for the festival to bring more tourists and delegates to the festival and many photographs in the archive show guests arriving, departing, or posing at the airport. The old airport was a convivial spot – children and adults would congregate on the upper floor watching the arriving and departing aircraft during an era when such things held a certain amount of awe. The old terminal was later decommissioned in 2006, on the opening of the new terminal just down the way, and with it the conviviality of the old gave way to the functionality of the new. Dorgan, on the right in a light-coloured jacket and glass in hand, is looking down at the programme of the 31st Cork Film Festival which took place in 1986. He had just taken over the film festival, along with Mick Hannigan, and this photo might be from the launch of that years’ festival. The location is not identified but given the artwork hanging on the walls behind them we might suggest the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork. Theo Dorgan’s name, together with Mick Hannigan, is intrinsically tied up with the early days of Hannigan’s tenureship of the festival. Born in Cork in 1953, Dorgan was educated at the North Monastery School and University College Cork where he later taught. Dorgan managed the literature programme at the Triskel Arts Centre in Cork from 1977 to 1979 crossing paths with Mick Hannigan and together they took on the then-struggling Cork Film Festival in 1986. He was later appointed director of Poetry Ireland and moved on from the festival in 1989. Dorgan has presented Poetry Now, the Inprint series, and The Invisible Thread, on RTÉ and Lyric FM radio. His poetry collections include The Ordinary House of Love (Salmon Publishing, Galway, 1991) (which was republished in 1998 with Rosa Mundi in the single volume What this Earth Cost Us [Dedalus Press, 2008]), Sappho’s Daughter (Wave Train Press, 1998), Greek (Dedalus Press, 2010), and Nine Bright Shiners (Dedalus Press, 2014) for which he was awarded the 2015 Poetry Now Award. With a keen interest in sailing Dorgan published his memoirs Sailing for Home (Dedalus Press, 2004) and Time on the Ocean (New Island Books, 2010). He was appointed to the Irish arts foundation Aosdána in 1999 and was an appointee of the Arts Council from 2003 to 2008. The two friends stand together and chat in the convivial setting. Nicholas, with a glass in hand, was a founding member of the London Friends of Cork and often hosted events at the Martini Terrace in London for the festival. The 1980 film festival programme notes that this group of London-based film people raised thousands of pounds to help the development of the Cork festival. Breen is in full flight, arm outstretched, while Nicholas leans forward, glass in hand, smiling for the camera. Nicholas was a founding member of the London Friends of Cork and often hosted events at the Martini Terrace in London for the festival. The 1980 film festival programme notes that this group of London-based film people raised thousands of pounds to help the development of the Cork festival. Nicholas went on to become Managing Director of Columbia-EMI-Warner Distributors. Behind Breen and Nicholas, in a light-coloured suit, we notice the Cork businessman and festival committee member, Dick Beamish. Around them, we sense the crowded room, decorated with Harp Lager signage of the festival sponsors, whose name also adorns the drink coasters that litter the table beside them. Wright was a Rank Organisation contract player for some years. He is shown in conversation with Vida Breen, the wife of the festival director Dermot Breen, at a dinner table which is decorated with a floral lilly-of-the-valley centrepiece. They are both in formal wear with Wright wearing a dark stylised dinner jacket with a bow tie and Breen wearing a light-coloured dress with a sheer dark bolero-style top. He is dressed in a light-coloured pin-stripe wool suit and tie and is standing smiling towards the camera. In the background the ruins of the medieval keep rises up behind him. Tony Wright (1925-1986) was an English film actor and Rank Organisation contract player along with the Scottish actor Maureen Swanson (later Lady Dudley) who also came to Cork for the festival. He has a large filmography and films made around the time he was in Cork include Seven Thunders (Hugo Fregonese, 1957) and The Spaniard's Curse (Ralph Kemplen, 1958). Wright was married to the English film actor Jean Munroe (1934-1972) for three years (1956-1959).
