The thirteen guests, all of whom are smiling for the camera, sit on either side of a long table with the Fianna Fáil politician, Gus Healy, seated at its head. The wooden table is adorned with candlesticks and the guests are having soup and a roll served on patterned tableware.  The identified guest, Barbara Vance, was the wife of Douglas Vance, the manager of the Metropole Hotel located on MacCurtain Street, Cork. The Metropole was designed by the architect Arthur Hill and was opened in 1897. The hotel was originally run by Jimmy Musgrave, after whom Musgrave (now Irish Independent) Park was named for his dedication to Rugby. Until the mid-1950s it was known as Ireland's finest 'dry hotel' because the owners, the Musgraves, believed alcohol should not be served; the ban was lifted in 1956 at the behest of the manager Douglas Vance - just in time for the first Cork film festival. The hotel occupied the upper floors of the building with the ground floor and basement let out for retail. Two shops on either side of the entrance included the famous Turkish Delight sweet shop Hadji Bey run by Harutan Batmazian who came to Cork from Armenia in 1903. Lawson's Outfitters occupied the other unit and the name can still be seen on the hotel's façade today. Edward VII supposedly took high tea on the roof of the hotel when he visited Cork in 1903 for the Great Exhibition of Cork. Douglas Vance took over the running of Metropole Hotel in 1944 and made headlines around the world when he refused a request from the English actor Dawn Addams for a bath to be filled with milk, noting that the Cork people would be appalled since they found it hard to make ends meet at the time. The back of the photograph identifies two of the participants as Donal Wilde, sitting at the table, and the photographer Padraig Kennelly. There is little information on Donal Wilde but we know he was a cameraman who possibly worked on the film Patriots for a Man: Blue Shirts and their Times (RTÉ, Nick Coffey, 2000), a film on the history of Irish far-right organisations in the 1930s. A bearded Pádraig Kennelly, wearing a light-coloured jacket and dark trousers, is standing on the right, hands resting on the table and leaning down while he follows the demonstration on the table before him. Kennelly was an Irish journalist, cameraman and photographer, who co-founded and edited Kerry’s Eye newspaper. He is best known for pursuing photojournalism with his wife, the photojournalist Joan Kennelly, who died in 2007. The Kennelly's were a formidable team, achieving international recognition with their work documenting the 1969 visit of Charles de Gaulle to Ireland. De Gaulle had just resigned as President of France and his exile to Ireland caused consternation and avid interest back home so, armed with local knowledge and a long-lens camera, the Kennelly’s tracked the de Gaulle entourage around Kerry taking a number of pictures one of which made the cover of Paris Match. Frank McNally notes in his article on 'Capturing a General' that, for many years after. the Kennelly’s would raise a toast to the de Gaulles’ visit: “Up Kerry and vive la France!” (Irish Times, 29.05.2013). During the Northern Ireland troubles, Sinn Féin organised a march through the city, led by the Thomas Ashe Piper’s Band, and placards saying “Cork Bleeds for Derry” and “Cork Supports its Northern Brothers”. Following the death of nine-year-old Patrick Rooney in Belfast, Lord Mayor Pearse Leahy said that Cork could offer refuge and accommodate 1,000 children from Northern Ireland trouble spots. The actor Judy Geeson (1948-) was a popular English film, television, and stage actor who began her career with television work such as in The Newcomers from 1965 to 1967 and Poldark in the mid-1970s. However it was her role in To Sir, With Love (James Clavell, 1967), age 18, opposite Sidney Poitier that secured her place in film history. Her filmography includes 10 Rillington Place (Richard Fleischer, 1971) with Richard Attenborough, the notoriously panned Carry on England (Gerald Thomas, 1976), and a supporting role in The Eagle Has Landed (John Sturges, 1976) alongside Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, and Jenny Agutter. Geeson is the sister of Carry On and Bless This House actor Sally Geeson (1950-). Judy Geeson was married to Sean Kenny, the Irish theatre designer, in 1969, until his sudden death in 1973, age 43. This is a unique film festival image, dated 1970s, of Tsai Chin. Chin is a Chinese actor born in 1933 and working to this day (2020). The daughter of Zhou Xinfang, a renowned master of the Peking Opera, she was the first Chinese student to study in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), the first Chinese actor to star in a West End show, and shored up the exotic quotient in movies such as Bond’s You Only Live Twice (Lewis Gilbert, 1967) and the Fu Manchu film franchise. In the 1960s she shot to fame when starring as 'Suzie,' the Hong Kong prostitute, in the 1959 West End play The World of Suzie Wong based on the book by Richard Mason; she would follow this with extensive work on stage, television, and screen including The Face of Fu Manchu (Don Sharp, 1965), The Virgin Soldiers (Leslie Thomas, 1966), The Joy Luck Club (Wayne Wang, 1993), Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 2006) and most recently the voice of ‘Nai Nai’ in the computer-animated adventure Abominable (Jill Culton, 2019). Wishing to break away from being typecast as an exotic ingénue she later took roles that challenged the stereotypes of Asian women on the screen. In 1988 Tsai Chin published her autobiography, Daughter of Shanghai, which recalls her early, and sometimes tragic, life including her early life in Shanghai, and her parents’ brutal deaths during the cultural revolution. It was a worldwide success and inspired the film of the same name, starring Tsai Chin, and directed by Michelle Chen Miao in 2019. With his left hand Gould clasps the hand of the politician, and former Lord Mayor of Cork, Gus Healy. We also recognise Robin O’Sullivan standing at the back on the left, under the fanlight wall sconce. O’Sullivan stepped in to run the film festival after the unexpected death of Breen in 1978, and ran it until Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan took over in the early eighties. A small number of festival programmes (eg <a href="https://corkfilmfest.ucc.ie/items/show/630">1970</a>) have a short history of the legend of St Finbarr. They note that St Finbarr is the patron saint of the Diocese of Cork; born in the sixth century at Raithleann near Bandon, he was the son of Amergin, a metal worker. Finnbarr founded a monastic settlement at Lough Irce, which we know as Gougane Barra – the source of the River Lee in Cork. Breen is shown shaking hands with the Harp rep while leaning over a large foil-covered harp.  Since its origin, the festival depends on the financial support of its sponsors including Player & Wills (Ireland) Ltd, Guinness Ireland, and Irish Distillers Ltd. The green-coloured face is angled left, wearing dark sunglasses. Hair is represented by film negative strips of various colours including orange, green and black strands. The back of the programme is an advertisement by festival sponsors Murphy’s for Murphy’s Irish Stout. It comprises a predominately black image suggesting a full pint of black stout with its cream-topped head. The logo of Murphy’s Irish Stout is realised on the front of the glass and light reflects off the condensation of the cold glass with text writ large across its front: It’s a Different Story. The 1988 programme is a soft card-bound programme measuring 29.5 x 20.5cm. The bind is stapled and it has 72 numbered pages.
