This might be the Irish actor Dublin-born Kathleen Ryan (1922-1985) who starred in the gritty film noir Odd Man Out (Carol Reed, 1947) opposite James Mason. Ryan was the subject of one of Lous le Brocquy's most striking portraits Girl in White (1941), which hangs in the National Museum of Northern Ireland. Tony Wright (1925-1986) was an English actor and Rank Organisation contract player for some years. He was known for his leading-men roles including Seven Thunders (Hugo Fregonese, 1957), The Spaniard's Curse (Ralph Kemplen, 1958) during the fifties. The design on the front cover is a Celtic-stylised image of a saint holding a staff in his right hand. The image is flanked by two emblems – one of the harp and one of the coat of arms of Cork (a ship between two towers). In the foreground, off centre, is a red Celtic-stylised image of a saint holding a staff in his right hand. The 1959 souvenir programme is a soft card-bound programme measuring 17cm x 24.5cm. The bind is stapled and it has 60 numbered pages. Title A name given to the resource Tóstal flag-raising ceremony at the City Hall Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Tóstal, Cork City Hall, Description An account of the resource This is an undated black and white photograph of the raising of the Tóstal flag at the Cork City Hall. A large crowd, held back by young men in white slacks and shirts, are gathered in front of the City Hall to watch the Lord Mayor and colleagues raise the flag, which flutters in the wind above their heads. The Cork Film Festival emerged from the tourist festival An Tóstal (1953-1958), a pageant held around Ireland to celebrate Ireland’s national image and whose self-stated primary object was to increase its tourist industry and ‘appreciate the beauties of our own land’. While this photo does not identify the dignitaries in this picture we recognise the back of Lord Mayor Patrick McGrath at the flag; he served as Lord Mayor from 1952-1955 which helps us date this picture to his mayoralty. Behind him, on the marble steps of the City Hall, we recognise the low stature of the Cork Fianna Fáil politician Gus Healy who would serve as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. Title A name given to the resource Trevor Rhone accepting an award from Peter Barry Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Trevor Rhone, Peter Barry, Award Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Jamaican director Trevor Rhone receiving an award from the Cork politician Peter Barry. Rhone, in a white jacket, is shaking hands with the formally dressed Barry, who leans towards Rhone with a smile on his face. Trevor Rhone was a celebrated Jamaican playwright and filmmaker. He co-wrote the successful film The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, 1972) with Perry Henzell. The Harder They Come is a gritty realist film much like the early neo-realist films of the Italian director Vittorio De Sica whom we also see in this archive. The Jamaican reggae singer Jimmy Cliff played the lead role in the film and is credited for introducing reggae music and Jamaican culture to global audiences. It was Jamaica’s first homegrown film and arguably its greatest. In Cork Rhone was awarded his first award for the best-edited film in 1972 for The Harder They Come before it travelled to Brixton’s Classic Cinema in London where Rhone had to hand out leaflets outside the cinema to woo an audience into its theatre. Soon after Rhone would achieve success and cult status in America. Title A name given to the resource Trevor Rhone and colleague Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Trevor Rhone, Jamaica Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Jamaican director Trevor Rhone in conversation with an unidentified delegate at a festival function. Rhone, wearing a light-coloured polo neck jumper under a white suit, is standing while talking to a young lady dressed in a dark-coloured satin dress with ruffles at the sleeves. She is seated and looks up at Rhone as he speaks, gesticulating with his right hand and holding a drink in his left. Behind them the room is busy with guests both seated and standing. The photo is undated but other photos of Trevor Rhone in the archive are variously dated 1972 and 1975 and we might put this image at 1975 given its similarity to another archive image. Rhone directed successful movies in both 1972 and 1975. He co-wrote the successful film The Harder They Come (1972) with Perry Henzell which won his first award for best-edited film in Cork that year. He later made Smile Orange (1975) based on an earlier play of his and, while it didn’t have the same impact as his earlier work, it was well received in the Caribbean and Jamaica. It went on to win a gold medal at the Cork Film Festival in 1975. His later filmography includes Milk and Honey (Glen Salzman, Rebecca Yates, 1988) and the Cannes Film Festival ‘favourite’ award winning One Love (Trevor Rhone, 2003), starring the son of Bob Marley – the reggae and hip-hop artist Ky-Mani Marley. Rhone, resting his chin on his right hand, is seated at the top of the table in a checkered shirt, his lean physique is turned towards his (unidentified) companions at the table who are smiling while looking down at the table. The table is littered with papers, cigarettes, ashtrays, and a pair of sunglasses. Behind them, we note the Press Office poster tacked to the wall, next to a man with a cigarette in his mouth who catches the flash of the camera with a smile. Trevor Rhone was in Cork for his successful film The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, 1972) which he co-wrote with Perry Henzell. (The back of the photo notes that this group includes Perry Henzell, but he isn’t in this picture.) It was the first Jamaican-produced feature film and introduced reggae music to an international audience, becoming a cult hit in the process. Rhone’s later filmography includes Milk and Honey (Glen Salzman, Rebecca Yates, 1988) and the Cannes Film Festival ‘favourite’ award-winning One Love (Trevor Rhone, 2003), starring Ky-Mani Marley – the son of Bob Marley. In addition to his film work, Rhone lectured in Jamaica and various American universities including Harvard; his contribution to Caribbean cinema is profound. Rhone died from a heart attack at the age of 69 in 2009 and is buried in Jamaica. Title A name given to the resource Trevor Rhone and the Jamaican delegation at the Savoy Cinema Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Savoy Cinema, Jamaica, Trevor Rhone, Perry Henzell Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the celebrated Jamaican playwright and film director Trevor Rhone and his colleagues at the Savoy Cinema in Cork. They are walking up the stone steps of the Savoy in the company of a lady identified as Dympna Warren. Warren is turned in conversation towards her companion, in sunglasses and a dark suit, who has his head lowered as he listens to her.  Behind them Trevor Rhone, wearing a light-coloured cheesecloth shirt, is heading up the steps in the company of his colleagues. We can just make out the day-time scene behind them at the doors of the cinema, where a small crowd can be seen milling around. This photo is dated 1972 which was the year that Rhone’s successful film, co-written with Perry Henzell, The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, 1972), was released. This gritty realist film, in which the Jamaican reggae singer Jimmy Cliff played a lead role, is credited for introducing reggae music and Jamaican culture to a global audience. It was Jamaica’s first homegrown film and arguably its greatest. When it premiered at the 1,500-seat cinema theatre in Kingston, Jamaica, in December 1972, 40,000 Jamaicans turned up. Trevor Rhone (1940-2009) grew up in Kingston, Jamaica, the last child of twenty-three. He went to drama school in England on a scholarship and on his return to Jamaica would instigate a resurgence of interest in Jamaican theatre, in particular with his 1971 play, the comedy Smile Orange. During this time he teamed up with the Jamaican director Perry Henzell to write the now seminal screenplay for The Harder They Come. Rhone made a significant impact on the literature and culture of Jamaica helping to bring it to an international audience. In 1972 he received his first award in Cork for the best-edited film (for The Harder They Come), before travelling to Brixton’s Classic Cinema in London, where he had to stand outside the cinema handing out leaflets in an attempt to woo an audience in. Rhone later made Smile Orange (1975), based on his 1971 play; while it didn’t have the same impact as his earlier film, it was well-received in the Caribbean and Jamaica and went on to win a gold medal at the Cork Film Festival in 1975. The young girl, standing amidst luggage, is laughing as she raises her hands. The location is not identified but it might be the front of the old Cork Airport. The rear of the photo identifies the delegate as ‘Turget, Billus-Turkish Film’. To the right of the shot, we recognise Robin O’Sullivan turned towards his companions. The 1970 festival programme notes that the short Turkish film Separate Worlds (Ayri Dünyalar) was shown that year. This might be an image of the director and producer Turgut N. Demirag. Demirag (1921-1987) was a Turkish film producer, director and screenwriter active between 1947-1973. His film Love and Grudge (1964) was entered into the Moscow International Film Festival in 1964. Title A name given to the resource U.S. Presidential advisor Ted Sorensen and others Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Theodore 'Ted' Sorensen, CIA, John F Kennedy, Father Cormac, Cuba, America Description An account of the resource This is a black and white sepia-toned photograph of Ted Sorensen, the political speechwriter behind John F Kennedy’s American presidential campaign in 1960. He is seated second from left, in glasses and dickie bow, with hands clasped in front of him. The other guests in the picture are not identified apart from a provisional Father Cormac, cigarette in hand, on the far right. The group is seated around a small square table, laden with drink, and looking up at the camera smiling. Theodore ‘Ted’ Sorensen was a close aide to President John F Kennedy whose inaugural address for Kennedy called on the American people to “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” In October 1962, Sorensen was involved with the growing missile crisis in Cuba when Kennedy asked him, and Bobby Kennedy, who was the Attorney General at the time, to draft a letter to the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. This letter was critical in persuading the Soviets to withdraw their missiles from Cuba, potentially averting war between the superpowers. The back of the photo states that Sorensen was a future CIA director – he was indeed nominated by President Jimmy Carter in 1977 for the post of CIA director but the nomination was killed by conservative critics who cited, amongst other reasons, his youthful claim to have been a conscientious objector. He also worked with Barack Obama on his U.S. presidential campaign. An Irish-produced documentary film Here Was Cuba (Emer Reynolds, John Murray 2013) tells the story of the Cuban Missile Crisis through the central characters of Kennedy, Castro, and Khrushchev. Many interviews were shot during 2010 for research purposes, including with Ted Sorensen. He died soon after in New York, age 82, following a stroke. Here Was Cuba was nominated for a prestigious Grierson Award in the category of 'Best Historical Documentary' in 2014.
