The light of the projector can be seen on the crowded balcony that is home to the Farmgate Café. Downstairs, in the market foyer, the audience are seated around the cast-iron market fountain looking up at a screen out of shot. The distinct signage for the long-established Moynihan’s Poultry market stall can be seen in the background. The English Market has often been transformed into a cultural hub and ad hoc cinema over the years, be it for the Cork Film Festival or the season finale premiere of The Young Offenders in 2018. The Farmgate has been the venue for a series of film festival ‘Grand Café Screenings’ of silent classics, sometimes with live musical accompaniment, and this image might be of one of those screenings. The market dates back to King James 1 in 1610 but it began trading as a covered market in 1788. It was named the ‘English Market’ to reflect the protestant makeup of the corporation of the time – the name also distinguished it from a nearby ‘Irish Market,’ otherwise known as St. Peter’s Market, located on North Main Street at the junction of Cornmarket Street. The English Market once served the wealthier classes in Cork, while the less well-off shopped at the Irish Market. The Irish Market is long since gone and is now the Bodega Bar at Cornmarket Street, while the English Market continues to thrive. Its fortunes wax and wane in tandem with the history of the city – be it revolution, fire, recession, or coronavirus pandemic – however it continues to act as the heartbeat of the city and its importance is unquestionable. The delegates are not identified but we recognise the English actor Linda Hayden standing at the foot of the Aer Lingus stairway with Breen. Nearby two members of the British Airways cabin crew stand close by – they are wearing a uniform designed by Sir Hardy Amies (1909-2003), official dressmaker to the Queen. This particular uniform was introduced in 1972 and replaced in 1977 which helps us date this picture, dated 1970s, further. The English actor David Hemmings stands at the bottom left of the photo with his arm around an unidentified delegate. Behind him, in a light coloured dress, his then partner Prudence de Casembroot, is seen looking off into the distance. Both Linda Hayden and David Hemmings were stars of British cinema during the 1970s. Above them on the stairway, a contingent of festival delegates, a few of whom are wearing festival ribbons on their lapel, pose for the camera. The airport is not identified but we suggest the background might be of the pier building at Dublin Airport. The photos are undated, but we might suggest they are from the late 1980s/early 1990s. We include the second photo of an unidentified person for its similarity to the first photo. It shows a festival colleague sitting in the same white-washed festival office as Hannigan, with its fern-like plant on the office cabinet and a poster of the German short Tour d'Amour (Veit El-Mer, 1989) which helps us date this image. The first photo shows Hannigan, mug in hand, working at his office desk under the painted cladding of the vaulted ceiling. Cork-born Hannigan had a keen interest in film since his time at University College Cork (UCC) as a member of its film society. He is a former member of the Irish Film Board, the European Film Academy, and worked as a programmer for the Irish Film Institute in the 1990s. As co-director of the Triskel Arts Centre in the eighties, Hannigan worked with Theo Dorgan, and together they ran the film festival after the resignation of O'Sullivan in 1985. In 2013, following his departure from the film festival, Hannigan set up the <a href="https://indiecork.com/">IndieCork Film Festival</a> with festival programmer Úna Feely who had worked for the Cork festival for many years. They are talking to each other, seated at a table laden with the detritus of a meal. McArdle, cigarette in hand, is turned towards Wetherell who is wearing a dark-coloured velvet dress. Virginia Wetherell (1943-) worked in Hammer horror productions including Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde (Roy Ward Baker, 1971) and Demons of the Mind (Peter Sykes, 1972), both of which were released around the time she came to visit the Cork Film Festival in 1972. She also appeared, as the naked actor tempting Malcolm McDowell as Alex, in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange in 1971. She met her future husband, the actor Ralph Bates, on the set of Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde and was married to him from 1973 until his death from cancer in 1991. In 1971 Wetherell opened a vintage clothes shop in London’s Notting Hill, known as Virginia. Virginia was an opulent boutique-style shop that attracted designers and models from all over the world, only shutting down in 2015 when Wetherell (now Bates) turned 72. The convivial group are at the festival club, standing in front of a poster advertising the French-Belgian film Rendezvous at Bray (André Delvaux, 1971). Deirdre O’Callaghan is an international harpist and singer; she was married to the Irish athlete Noel Carroll from 1964 until his untimely death in 1998. Carroll was a middle-distance runner who competed for Ireland in the 1964 Toyko Olympics and the 1968 games in Mexico. He was one of the founders of the Dublin Marathon and the winner of the marathon now receives the Noel Carroll Memorial Trophy in his name. While the photo is marked 1968, the Rendezvous at Bray poster allows us to provisionally date the photo after the release of this film. Rendezvous at Bray starred the Danish-French actor Anna Karina (1940-2019) who acted in several films made by her ex-husband Jean-Luc Goddard, including A Woman Is a Woman (1961), My Life to Live (1962), and Band of Outsiders (1964) (with the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1MKUJN7vUk">iconic line-dance scene in the Parisian café with Sami Frey and Claude Brasseur</a>!). Karina also starred in Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Chinese Roulette (1976) which he supposedly wrote for her. The archive has some film stills from Fassbinder’s Querelle (1982) with the actor Brad Davis and Günther Kaufmann – the sometimes lover of Fassbinder. They are both standing in front of a promotional poster for the Harp Lager-sponsored Cork Film Festival and smiling at the camera. Asher has become well known in recent years for her writing, business and charity work. However she had a prodigious career in film, theatre, radio and television since she was a young child. Her television work in England is extensive and includes Brideshead Revisited, Miss Marple, New Tricks, and A Voyage Round My Father with Laurence Olivier. Her filmography includes Deep End (Jerzy Skolimowksi, 1970) (with music by Cat Stevens), Alfie (Lewis Gilbert, 1966) with Michael Caine, and the British sitcom The Old Guys. At the time of this picture, marked 1972, Asher starred in Henry VIII and His Six Wives (Waris Huessein, 1972) where she played the part of Jane Seymour. The personal life of Asher was of great interest to the British media when she was engaged to the Beatle Paul McCartney, whom she met when she was 17. However she broke off her engagement some years later, age 22, after finding him in bed with someone else. She later married the satirical cartoonist Gerald Scarfe in 1981. As well as being a shareholder in the satirical magazine, Private Eye, Asher has written many books including best-selling novels and lifestyle books with a particular interest in baking. Her range of kitchenware is sold in Poundland in the UK and in Dealz in Ireland. Player and Wills were friends of the film festival and supported it on occasion with a development grant. While this picture appears to be taken at the festival club we know that Player and Wills sometimes held a reception for the festival at their factory headquarters on Dublin’s South Circular Road. The factory was constructed in 1935 for Player and Wills tobacco until its closure in 2005 when the company moved out of Ireland. The Player Wills site is regarded as one of the last remaining quality development sites in the city centre and, as of May 2020, is being considered for redevelopment into c. 400 new homes.    Both Vicki and Ann Michelle are English actors. Vicki Michelle (1950-), on the right in this photo, is best known for her work in the BBC television series ‘Allo ‘Allo. She has an extensive television and stage career appearing on Celebrity Masterchef (2008), Emmerdale (2007-2009), I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! (2014). She has also appeared on the Irish sketch show The Mario Rosenstock Show (2012). Michelle played alongside her sister, Ann Michelle (1952-), in The Virgin Witch (Ray Austin, 1971) which was rejected by the British Board of Film Censors before being passed with an X-rating. The cut version was released in 1972 around the time of this photograph. Ann Michelle also had a small role in the British horror-cult film Psychomania (aka The Death Wheelers) (Don Sharp, 1973) starring the Academy Award-winning George Sanders and Beryl Reid. Sanders (1906-1972) died by suicide soon after completing Psychomania.
