An account of the resource
The 1965 festival programme is slim, with an abstract design on its cover in the form of text decorated film negative winding around itself on a black background. The back cover is plain white with an advertisement for ‘Cork Dry Gin’ showing the distinctive Cork Dry Gin bottle on a silver platter along with two glasses – one of which is decorated with a lemon slice.<br /><br />The 1965 programme is a soft card-bound programme measuring 26.5cm x 11cm. The bind is stapled and it has 84 numbered pages. There is minor wear & tear on the cover. Note articles: <em>Ten Years Ago</em> (on the birth of the film festival) by Conor Sweeney (pp.6-9); <em>Tribute to Billy Wilder (</em>pp.75-78); Symposium: <em>Censorship and the Film</em> (with Dan Donovan, Mollie Plowright, Fr Holloway, and Fr Kelly) (p.74).

An account of the resource
The 1961 festival programme cover is cream-coloured with a Celtic-stylised faded image of a saint holding a staff in his right hand - probably St Finbarr of Cork. The image is flanked by two emblems – one of the harp and one of the coat of arms of Cork (a ship between two towers). The image is faded where the print has rubbed off. The back cover is cream with no images. The printer is credited at the lower edge of the page.<br /><br />The 1961 programme is a soft discoloured card-bound programme measuring 20.5cm x 13.5cm. The bind is stapled and it has 40 numbered pages.

In the foreground is a Celtic-stylised image of a saint holding a staff in his right hand. The image is flanked by two emblems – one of the harp and one of the coat of arms of Cork (a ship between two towers). The image is faded where the print has rubbed off. The back cover is plain off-white with no images. The printer is credited at the centre. The cost of the programme (2/-) is noted bottom left. <br /><br />The 1960 programme is a soft card-bound programme measuring 24cm x 16.5cm. The bind is stapled and it has 40 numbered pages. It has wear and tear on the cover which has come away from the rust-damaged staples. A pencilled name ‘Noel Ryan-Savoy’ is scribbled across the top edge of the programme.

An account of the resource
The 2019 festival poster has an orange and purple colour scheme with a purple stripe on its left. To the right of the purple stripe, there is an image of a young man caught mid-flight in dance on an orange background; he is wearing an embellished Georgian tunic and ballet slippers and is shown arched back with his arms stretched behind him. The dancer is more than likely the actor Levan Gelbakhiani from the Georgian film <em>And Then We Danced </em>(Levan Akin, 2020) which was shown at the festival that year. The festival logo of a three-masted sailing ship sits at the top right of the poster next to the number 64 which is the edition of the 2019 festival. Festival sponsors are detailed at the bottom of the poster along a white strip.

This black and white photo shows the composer Philip Green, in glasses on the left, in a huddle with festival committee members. The back of the photo notes the company of David Coughlan, Dick Murphy, and Frank Dorgan. <br /><br />Philip Green was born in East London in 1911 and had an extensive career in film music composition. He composed hundreds of film scores and themes for popular television programmes during his career. However, it was his conversion to Catholicism in the early 1970s that contributed to his creation of the <em>St Patrick's Mas</em>s, which he composed, produced, and recorded in 1970 before bringing it to Cork. The Mass was a personal tribute of thanksgiving to not only the church, but Ireland too, for which he had a fondness.

They are accompanied by a smiling Westropp Irvine, a representative from <em>Player & Wells</em> <em>(Ireland) Ltd</em>. Along with the Irish Tourist Board, <em>Player & Wells</em> provided financial support to the festival for many years during the 1960s and early 1970s.

An account of the resource
This is a black and white photo of festival delegates, some of whom are holding awards. We recognise festival committee members and friends including Gus Healy, Peter Barry, Gerry Jones (with eye-patch), along with Lord Mayor Pearse Wyse at the left of the photo – hands clasped behind his back. <br /><br />Wyse served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1967 and again in 1974. He stands next to the Irish filmmaker Louis Marcus who is holding the Waterford Crystal Award which was awarded for the best Irish film. His first documentary <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/"><em>The Silent Art</em> </a>(1958), on his friend the Cork-born sculptor, Seamus Murphy (1907-1975), is of particular interest to us as Murphy designed the bronze St Finbarr statuette that was presented to prize winners at the festival for some years. In this photo we see two delegates holding the statuette as designed by Murphy.<br /><br />We note that one of the award recipients, Gerry Duffy, was Manager of 20th Century Fox in Ireland and received his award on behalf of the screenwriter Alvin Sargent for <em>The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds </em>(Paul Newman, 1972). The picture also includes Gerry O'Halloran - who might be the tall man wearing a light-coloured jacket standing behind a low-sized Gus Healy. O'Halloran was from the British Film Institute and participated in workshops for the festival.

This black and white photo is of a large group of festival delegates spread out across the stage seated behind the Lord Mayor, Timothy J O’Sullivan, who is speaking at the microphone. The delegates, all men in dark suits, are seated in front of large curtain drapes. We note the back of the conductor, in the orchestra pit below, and the young faces of seated musicians partially hidden by floral arrangments. <br /><br />The Fine Gael Lord Mayor, Timothy J O’Sullivan, was Lord Mayor of Cork during 1971-1972 which helps us date this photo. We notice the dark-haired English screenwriter, Wolf Mankowitz, seated behind the Lord Mayor, wearing a dark polo neck top under his suit. Mankowitz moved to Cork in 1971 to avail of Charles Haughey’s generous tax policy towards artists. In 1972 Mankowitz wrote and directed <em>The Hebrew Lesson</em> starring Milo O’Shea, Patrick Dawson, and Harry Towb. It was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1972.

An account of the resource
This black and white photo shows a convivial group of delegates including the Irish actor Sinéad Cusack. She is shown on the right, a bouquet of flowers in hand, wearing a floral dress. Her companions chat in the bright light of the day in front of dense foliage. Cusack has a prolific stage and film career including parts in <em>Hoffman</em> (Alvin Rakoff, 1970) with Peter Sellers, <em>Stealing Beauty</em> (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1996) and John Boorman’s <em>Queen and Country</em> (2014). <em>Queen and Country </em>had its première at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014 and its Irish première at the Cork Film Festival that year.
