The back of the photo identifies only Justin Keating who we see seated on the far right in the front row, looking down laughing. We recognise the former Lord Mayor, Gus Healy, from other images in the archive, and he is seated in the front row on the far left, next to his wife. The audience are all dressed in evening wear, dinner suits for the men and evening dresses for the women. They appear to be waiting for the show to start and are animated chatting to each other or looking around. Ashtrays are placed in intervals in front of the first row guests, most of whom are holding a programme in their hands. Justin Keating (1930-2009) was an Irish Labour party politician who would serve in Dáil Éireann under Liam Cosgrave as Minister for Industry and Commerce from 1973 to 1977. He was a key figure in the creation of the Labour party created by Brendan Corish in the 1960s and ushered in a new era of politics at the time. He also worked as a veterinary surgeon, and lectured at UCD, and was a journalist for RTÉ during its early days. Keating also represented Ireland at the European level serving twice as an MEP. He was the President of the Humanist Association of Ireland (HAI) whose tribute to him on his death notes that he was passionate about Ireland and the role of Europe in the world. We can see the back of the audience facing the stage with its empty white screen. The Pavilion Cinema was one of Ireland’s oldest cinemas having opened on Patrick Street in Cork in 1921. It was the first cinema in Cork to show ‘talkies’ with The Singing Fool (Lloyd Bacon, 1928) starring Al Jolson (cinematreasures.org). It shut down in 1989, with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Steven Spielberg, 1989), being its final movie. Title A name given to the resource Actor Jack Wild with Mrs Simon Wade Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Jack Wild, David Hemmings, Simon Wade Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the English actor Jack Wild posing with a festival attendee identified as 'Mrs. Simon Wade from Toronto, Canada'. Wild, with his distinctive long hair and a festival ribbon pinned to his open-neck shirt, would have been around 20 years old in this picture. Jack Wild was best known for his role as the Artful Dodger in Oliver! (Carol Reed, 1968) which also starred Oliver Reed and Harry Secombe. Wild received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Oliver! and went on to work in TV and film including an episode of The Onedin Line (1972) with Peter Gilmore, who also came to the Cork festival.  In 1971 Wilde starred alongside Daniel Latimer and Tracy Hyde in Melody (Warrin Hussein, 1971) written by Alan Parker and produced by David Puttnam - who now lives in West Cork. Following Melody Wild starred in The 14 (1973), directed by David Hemmings who was a visitor to the festival around the same time as Wild. Wild, however, never replicated the success of his debut role in Oliver! and, following a life of health and personal issues, died from cancer, age 53, in 2006. All three are facing the camera smiling. Clive and Ball wear a festival ribbon pinned to their jackets and we also notice how the belt of Nicholas Ball has the logo ‘ball’ stitched onto it. John Clive, on the left in a tweed jacket, was an English film and television actor and author. He is best known to us from his film roles in The Italian Job (Peter Collinson, 1969) with Michael Caine, A Clockwork Orange (Stanley Kubrick, 1971) and four of the Carry On films from the 1970s. He also played a small part in the Norman Cohen directed movie Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers (1977); the Irish director Cohen also came to Cork around the time of this photo. Famously Clive was the voice of John Lennon in the animated film Yellow Submarine (George Dunning, 1968) as the Beatles did not want to use their own voices in the movie. He was also a successful author for his best-selling books including KG200, The Last Liberator, and Barossa. Nicholas Ball and Pamela Stephenson were a couple around the time of this photo having being married for brief time in the 1970s before she met, and eloped with, Billy Connolly in 1979. Born in New Zealand, Stephenson has forged a prolific career as writer, performer and psychologist. Her movie credits include Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977) in which she acted with John Clive and Lynda Bellingham, both of whom were at the festival. Hatfield, in a dress suit, is smiling as he looks to his right at his young companion. On his left a lady, in a white fur-trimmed jacket, smiles broadly at the camera. This is the only image we have of Hurd Hatfield in the archive and is particularly special because his name is forever associated with Cork in the naming of Hatfield House on Tobin Street. Hatfield House was the headquarters for the Cork film festival for many years and was named for Hurd Hatfield who was a friend of the festival. Hatfield House is now the home of Barbara Hubert Hand Bookbindery. Tobin Street itself is the home of the Triskel Arts Centre which is attached to the medieval Christchurch which fronts onto South Main Street. In 1984 excavations on this narrow street revealed medieval layers constituting backyards of houses that once fronted onto Tobin Street.  Hurd Hatfield (1917-1998) was born in New York City, studied drama in London, but eventually made his home in East Cork after visiting his friend, the actor Angela Lansbury, whom he met on the set of The Picture of Doran Gray, and who lived in nearby Conna. He restored the 13th-century Ballinterry House and spent the last twenty years or so of his life there. He made his name in Hollywood after playing the title role of Dorian Gray in the MGM film The Picture of Dorian Gray (Albert Lewin, 1945). His filmography includes The Diary of a Chambermaid (Jean Renoir, 1946), The Beginning or the End (Norman Taurog, 1947), Mickey One (Arthur Penn, 1961) with bit parts in movies such as The Boston Strangler (Richard Fleischer, 1968) and Her Alibi (Bruce Beresford, 1989).  Interestingly Hatfield was a student of the Russian-American actor and teacher Mikhail Chekhov, nephew of the playwright Anton Chekhov, and would perform extensively with his company in the former Soviet Union. His link with Russian culture was profound and on his death bed in Cork, he was attended to by a Russian Orthodox priest. Price, in a tweed jacket and holding a camera, smiles for the camera next to her young companion. The photo, which is stamped by the Irish Tourist Board (Bord Fáilte Éireann), notes that she is the daughter of Cadwallader Kelsey of Philadelphia. Cadwallader Kelsey was the founder of the Kelsey car company and ran it from 1897 until its demise in 1924. His three-wheel automobile, Auto-tri, is now on display in the Smithsonian Institution. Prior to his death in 1970 he was working on developing a flying automobile, the Skycar. (The New York Times, 18.05.1970.) Being from Philadelphia, Anita Price would have been familiar with the link between the founder of Pennsylvania, Admiral William Penn, and Macroom, County Cork. Penn’s father, Sir William Penn, lived in Macroom Castle for some years following Cromwell’s successful battle during the English Civil War. He later lost the lands after the restoration of the monarchy and received an estate in Shanagarry, East Cork, in 1667. His son, the Quaker William Penn, would found the State of Pennsylvania after spending time in County Cork at his father’s estate during the 1660s. In this photo Price is posing in front of the 1970s façade of Macroom's Penn Coffee House, advertising a 'Kingsize William Penn burger' on its window. The photo notes that she was the then Managing Director of CINE (Council on International Nontheatrical Events) in Washington DC. Founded in 1957, CINE was a non-profit organisation whose mission was to select American films and documentaries for international film and video festivals. It awarded prestigious Golden Eagles to those selected to represent America and recipients include Mel Brooks (The Critic, 1963), Barbara Koppel (American Dream, 1990; A Century of Women, 1994; Bearing Witness, 2005) and Martin Scorsese (No Direction Home, 2006). In the year of this photo, 1972, the award was won by Ron Howard for Deed of Daring-Do (1969). Player and Wills were friends of the film festival and supported it on occasion with a development grant. While this picture appears to be taken at the festival club we know that Player and Wills sometimes held a reception for the festival at their factory headquarters on Dublin’s South Circular Road. The factory was constructed in 1935 for Player and Wills tobacco until its closure in 2005 when the company moved out of Ireland. The Player Wills site is regarded as one of the last remaining quality development sites in the city centre and, as of May 2020, is being considered for redevelopment into c. 400 new homes.    Both Vicki and Ann Michelle are English actors. Vicki Michelle (1950-), on the right in this photo, is best known for her work in the BBC television series ‘Allo ‘Allo. She has an extensive television and stage career appearing on Celebrity Masterchef (2008), Emmerdale (2007-2009), I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! (2014). She has also appeared on the Irish sketch show The Mario Rosenstock Show (2012). Michelle played alongside her sister, Ann Michelle (1952-), in The Virgin Witch (Ray Austin, 1971) which was rejected by the British Board of Film Censors before being passed with an X-rating. The cut version was released in 1972 around the time of this photograph. Ann Michelle also had a small role in the British horror-cult film Psychomania (aka The Death Wheelers) (Don Sharp, 1973) starring the Academy Award-winning George Sanders and Beryl Reid. Sanders (1906-1972) died by suicide soon after completing Psychomania. Wearing a tweed coat and a white hat, Neagle is chatting with two young children who are on the hospital bed. The little girl, with a large ribbon tied into her hair, is reaching out to the gloved hand of Neagle while the young boy, wearing a striped jumper, looks on. In Neagle's left hand she is carrying a rattan woven basket of light-coloured flowers. Neagle was a popular actor during the 1930s-1950s. She was best known for her many historical characters including Nell Gwyn in Nell Gwyn (Herbert Wilcox, 1934) and Let's Make Up (Herbert Wilcox, 1954). She is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records for her 2,062 consecutive performances in the stage play Charlie Girl which ran from 1965 to 1971. Neagle was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1952 for her services to drama so would have been Lady Anna Neagle during her visit to Cork. In between Neagle and the Mayor we can make out the features of Gus (Augustine) Healy who was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and Lord Mayor of Cork from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. Neagle is dressed in a dark suit accessorised with a fur stole and hat. The station master is facing the camera and gesturing with his left hand. To his right, a young child, with an eye-patch over his left eye, wearing shorts and a dark jacket can be made out.
