O’Sullivan, with a rose in the lapel of his jacket, is turned towards Larkin as she speaks to him. Born in Dublin, Larkin played parts in the British thriller film The Internecine Project (Ken Hughes, 1974), BBC drama Wessex Tales (1973) and the Australian miniseries Against the Wind (1978), which ran for 13 episodes. Larkin played the leading role of ‘Mary Mulvane’ in Against the Wind about the transportation of Irish convicts to New South Wales in Australia during the late 18th century. Larkin is married to the Irish stage, film, and television actor Jim Norton who starred as Bishop Brennan in the Channel 4 production Father Ted (1995-1998). Hennessy, on the left, with a drink in hand, looks up somewhat forlornly to the camera. His companions, also holding drinks, pose for the camera in front of gilt-framed art work adorning the walls behind them. (This might be the same drinks reception attended by the poet John Montague in a similarly uncredited photo and can be viewed in the archive by clicking on Montague’s ‘tag’ below.) Charlie Hennessy, a senior partner of JW O’Donovan Solicitors on Cork’s South Mall, made a tremendous contribution to the Cork Film Festival. On his death in 2008, Mick Hannigan, the then festival director, noted that Hennessy’s contribution to the cultural life of Cork was immense. Along with Dermot Breen, Hennessy was involved with the film festival since its inception in 1956. He was its chairperson for twenty-one years from 1985 to 2005 and continued to work for the festival, and for the Cork Opera House, attending board meeting up until his death, age 77. Hennessy attended the Presentation Brothers College on the Mardyke, playing rugby for his school and University College Cork. As well as sport, and the film festival, his interest in the arts included involvement with the Presentation Theatre Guild, Cork Operatic Society, the Gilbert and Sullivan group and the Southern Theatre Group. Hennessy was a member of the Arts Council from 1998 to 1993. Title A name given to the resource Theo Dorgan and friend at Cork Airport Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Theo Dorgan, Cork Airport Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the poet Theo Dorgan with an unidentified companion at Cork Airport. They are both sheltering from the rain under a Ford-sponsored umbrella in front of the old terminal of Cork Airport. Prior to the arrival of Cork Airport over-seas visitors travelled to the festival on the Dublin-Cork train. The Irish actor David Kelly, recalling the train journey from Dublin to Cork, noted: "Irish hospitality was at its finest on that train, an elegant Orient Express atmosphere wrapped in a thoroughly Celtic welcome that made strangers who got on in Dublin lifelong friends by the time it arrived in Cork. Revelry and romance are the two words that come mostly to mind when I recall the journey." (John Daly, Irish Examiner, 04.11.2017) However, the arrival of the airport in 1961 was seen as a great opportunity for the festival to bring more tourists and delegates to the festival and many photographs in the archive show guests arriving, departing, or posing at the airport. The old airport was a convivial spot – children and adults would congregate on the upper floor watching the arriving and departing aircraft during an era when such things held a certain amount of awe. The old terminal was later decommissioned in 2006, on the opening of the new terminal just down the way, and with it the conviviality of the old gave way to the functionality of the new. The photo is undated, but we might suggest that it is from the 1980s when Hannigan, along with the poet Theo Dorgan, took the helm of the festival from Robin O’Sullivan who had managed it magnanimously after the unexpected death of festival founder Dermot Breen in 1978. Hannigan and Dorgan were a formidable team and consolidated the work of the festival bringing short and independent films to big venues such as the Cork Opera House. In 1996 Hannigan opened the first art house cinema in Cork – The Kino – located on Washington Street, at the top of the Western Road. Its first film was the low-key British film Brassed Off (Mark Herman, 1996) but it was Shine (Scott Hick, 1996) that sustained an eleven-week run ensuring the early success of the Kino. It ran both popular and art-house films and, in conjunction with the Cork Film Festival, brought retrospective and cultural films to Cork. However, plagued by financial concerns, the Kino closed its doors in 2009 and the building, once a cultural hub for the city, is now destined for redevelopment. Following his departure from the Cork Film Festival in 2013, Hannigan set up the Indie Cork Film Festival with festival programmer Úna Feely. Feely had worked for the Cork Film Festival since 1995 and was its festival programmer from 2001 until her departure, with Hannigan, in 2013. Hannigan and Feely also run Green Ray Film Agency which provides a broad range of services to filmmakers, festivals, and event organisers. Dorgan, on the right in a light-coloured jacket and glass in hand, is looking down at the programme of the 31st Cork Film Festival which took place in 1986. He had just taken over the film festival, along with Mick Hannigan, and this photo might be from the launch of that years’ festival. The location is not identified but given the artwork hanging on the walls behind them we might suggest the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork. Theo Dorgan’s name, together with Mick Hannigan, is intrinsically tied up with the early days of Hannigan’s tenureship of the festival. Born in Cork in 1953, Dorgan was educated at the North Monastery School and University College Cork where he later taught. Dorgan managed the literature programme at the Triskel Arts Centre in Cork from 1977 to 1979 crossing paths with Mick Hannigan and together they took on the then-struggling Cork Film Festival in 1986. He was later appointed director of Poetry Ireland and moved on from the festival in 1989. Dorgan has presented Poetry Now, the Inprint series, and The Invisible Thread, on RTÉ and Lyric FM radio. His poetry collections include The Ordinary House of Love (Salmon Publishing, Galway, 1991) (which was republished in 1998 with Rosa Mundi in the single volume What this Earth Cost Us [Dedalus Press, 2008]), Sappho’s Daughter (Wave Train Press, 1998), Greek (Dedalus Press, 2010), and Nine Bright Shiners (Dedalus Press, 2014) for which he was awarded the 2015 Poetry Now Award. With a keen interest in sailing Dorgan published his memoirs Sailing for Home (Dedalus Press, 2004) and Time on the Ocean (New Island Books, 2010). He was appointed to the Irish arts foundation Aosdána in 1999 and was an appointee of the Arts Council from 2003 to 2008. The Lord Mayor Seán French, wearing his chain of office, is seated behind Hemmings next to the former Lord Mayor Gus Healy. Some of the other nine delegates are provisionally identified at the back of the photo as the Everyman Theatre founder, and Presentation Brothers College (PBC) teacher, Dan Donovan, Teddy O’Brien, festival director Dermot Breen, and Dorinda Coomber.  David Hemmings was an English actor, director, and producer who achieved international fame as a sixties icon following his memorable role, as a London fashion photographer (which might have been based on David Bailey), in Blow-Up (1966), by the Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Sarah Miles. He later played the leading man, opposite Jane Fonda, in Roger Vadim’s fantasy Barbarella (1970). His filmography includes The Charge of the Light Brigade (Tony Richardson, 1968), Alfred the Great (Clive Donner, 1969) (which was filmed in Ireland), Juggernaut (Richard Lester, 1974), with Richard Harris and Omar Sharif, and the gangster movie The Squeeze (Michael Apted, 1977) with Stacy Keach and Edward Fox. Distracted by television roles and running his company, Hemdale Corporation, during the 1980s, his credits include Magnum PI, Airwolf, The A-Team, and Quantum Leap. By the 2000s his return to film was well-received and included the role of ‘Cassius’ in Gladiator (Ridley Scott, 2000), and the role of ‘Lenny’ in the poignant Last Orders (2001), alongside Tom Courtenay and Michael Caine, which was shown at the 46th edition of the Cork Film Festival in 2001. His role in The League of Extraordinary Gentleman (2003), with Sean Connery, was one his final roles before his unexpected death in Romania in 2003, age 62, whilst filming the British-Romanian horror film Blessed (a.k.a.Samantha’s Child) (Simon Fellows, 2004) with Heather Graham and James Purefoy. We also note that he had a minor role in the film St Joan (1957), based on the George Bernard play, directed by Austrain-born director Otto Preminger, who came to the film festival with Jean Seberg in the late 1950s. Title A name given to the resource U.S. Presidential advisor Ted Sorensen and others Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Theodore 'Ted' Sorensen, CIA, John F Kennedy, Father Cormac, Cuba, America Description An account of the resource This is a black and white sepia-toned photograph of Ted Sorensen, the political speechwriter behind John F Kennedy’s American presidential campaign in 1960. He is seated second from left, in glasses and dickie bow, with hands clasped in front of him. The other guests in the picture are not identified apart from a provisional Father Cormac, cigarette in hand, on the far right. The group is seated around a small square table, laden with drink, and looking up at the camera smiling. Theodore ‘Ted’ Sorensen was a close aide to President John F Kennedy whose inaugural address for Kennedy called on the American people to “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” In October 1962, Sorensen was involved with the growing missile crisis in Cuba when Kennedy asked him, and Bobby Kennedy, who was the Attorney General at the time, to draft a letter to the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. This letter was critical in persuading the Soviets to withdraw their missiles from Cuba, potentially averting war between the superpowers. The back of the photo states that Sorensen was a future CIA director – he was indeed nominated by President Jimmy Carter in 1977 for the post of CIA director but the nomination was killed by conservative critics who cited, amongst other reasons, his youthful claim to have been a conscientious objector. He also worked with Barack Obama on his U.S. presidential campaign. An Irish-produced documentary film Here Was Cuba (Emer Reynolds, John Murray 2013) tells the story of the Cuban Missile Crisis through the central characters of Kennedy, Castro, and Khrushchev. Many interviews were shot during 2010 for research purposes, including with Ted Sorensen. He died soon after in New York, age 82, following a stroke. Here Was Cuba was nominated for a prestigious Grierson Award in the category of 'Best Historical Documentary' in 2014. Attenborough is signing the visitors' book seated next to the Lord Mayor and festival chairman Charlie Hennessy on the far left. Fellow dignitaries include festival director Robin O’Sullivan, in the centre of the back row, and representatives from Ford Motor Ireland who were the main sponsors for the festival that year.  Dan Wallace (1942-) was a former Fianna Fáil politician who served Cork for almost twenty-five years as a TD for the Cork North-Central constituency and as a Lord Mayor from 1985 to 1986. He once worked as a customs clerk with the Ford Motor Company in Cork and might have been familiar with the Ford representatives in this photo. Ford Motors, had a purpose-built factory on the Marina in Cork and once employed up to 7,000 workers. The factory closed in 1984, with the Ford Sierra being the last model produced. Richard Attenborough (1923-2014) was an English politician, actor, and award-winning filmmaker. He is the older brother of Sir David Attenborough. Richard Attenborough’s prolific filmography includes acting roles in The Great Escape (John Sturges, 1963), Loot (Silvio Narizzano, 1970), and Rosebud (1975) directed by Otto Preminger and starring Peter O’Toole – both of whom came to the Cork festival. Attenborough directed Gandhi (1982), Chaplin (1992), Shadowlands (1993), and his final film Closing the Ring in 2007. Around the time of this picture in 1985 he had just finished A Chorus Line (1985) and was working on the Academy-nominated epic film Cry Freedom (1987) which he directed and produced. Cry Freedom was nominated for three academy awards and won the Peace Film Award at the Berlin Festival that year. Attenborough was a member of the prestigious European Film Academy (EFA). Founded in 1989, with Ingmar Bergman as its first president, it seeks to advance the interests of the European film industry and to increase public awareness of European cinema. The EFA invited former festival director Mick Hannigan to join the academy in 2006. Hannigan took over as festival director from Robin O’Sullivan soon after this photo was taken in 1985. As a voting member of EFA Hannigan’s name joined a list that includes, along with Attenborough and Bergman, Pedro Almodóvar, Federico Fellini, and David Puttnam. In 2020 the chairman of the academy is the Irish producer, author, and journalist Mike Downey. Tong, wearing a velvet jacket over a white shirt, appears to be at a bar, in front of an optic spirit dispenser for Powers Whiskey.  Born in 1951, Tong is known for her television, radio and stage work including Heart of the Country (BBC, 1986), Middlemarch (PBS, 1994), and The Politician’s Wife (PSB, 1996) as well as several appearances in Coronation Street. However she is probably best known for her role as Daisy Peel in the period television drama series Upstairs, Downstairs (1973-1975) for which she received an Emmy nomination in 1977 – a year before this picture was taken in 1978. Tong's film appearances include How to Get Ahead in Advertising (Bruce Robinson, 1989), Princess Caraboo (Michael Austin, 1994), Upstairs, Downstairs Remembered: 25th Anniversary (1996) and Angel (François Ozon, 2007) with Sam Neill, Michael Fassbender and Charlotte Rampling.
