Anna Neagle was the stage name of Dame Florence Marjorie Wilcox, DBE. She was a popular actor during the 1930s-1950s, best known for her many historical characters including Nell Gwyn in Nell Gwyn (Herbert Wilcox, 1934) and Let's Make Up (Herbert Wilcox, 1954). She is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records for her 2,062 consecutive performances in the stage play Charlie Girl which ran from 1965 to 1971. Neagle was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1952 for her services to drama so would have been Lady Anna Neagle during her visit to Cork. Both Massari and Mari were Italian actors and from this, we might guess that this fair-haired woman in this picture is Forella Mari. Born in Brazil, Mari moved to Rome in the 1950s and is best known for her roles in Are We Men or Corporals? (Camillo Mastrocinque, 1955) and Fathers and Sons (Padri e figli) (1957) by Mario Monicelli, which was shown at the Cork Film Festival that year. The group are standing in front of a poster advertising the French-Belgian film Rendezvous at Bray (André Delvaux, 1971) which starred the Danish-French actor Anna Karina (1940-2019) who featured in several films made by her ex-husband Jean-Luc Goddard. A bespectacled Carroll and Ann Michelle both smile at the camera while Vicki Michelle looks up at Carroll laughing. Noel Carroll (1941-1998) was an Irish middle-distance runner who set European and World Records in the 1960s and competed for Ireland in the Tokyo Olympic Games. He was one of the founders of the Dublin Marathon in 1980 and, since his untimely death in 1998, the winner of the Marathon receives the Noel Carroll Memorial Trophy. Carroll was married to the international harpist Deirdre O'Callaghan who also came to the film festival. The Michelle sisters are both English actors born in Essex. Vicki Michelle (1950-) is best known for her work on the BBC television series ‘Allo ‘Allo. She has an extensive television and stage career appearing on Celebrity Masterchef (2008), Emmerdale (2007-2009), I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! (2014). She has also appeared on the Irish sketch show The Mario Rosenstock Show (2012). Vicki Michelle played alongside her sister Ann Michelle (1952-) in The Virgin Witch (Ray Austin, 1971) which was rejected by the British Board of Film Censors before being passed with an X rating. The cut version was released in 1972 around the time of this photograph. Ann Michelle also had a small part in the British horror-cult film Psychomania (aka The Death Wheelers) (Don Sharp, 1973) starring George Sanders and Beryl Reid. Sanders (1906-1972) was an English actor with an extensive film career including All About Eve (Joseph L Mankiewicz, 1950) starring Bette Davis, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. However his personal life was fraught and in 1972, soon after completing Psychomania, he committed suicide stating in a suicide note that he was bored. Born in 1942, Tate is best known for his role as a pilot in the British-Italian 1970s science fiction television series Space: 1999 (1975-1977) with Martin Landau. Tate also had parts in many Australian and American television shows including The X-Files, Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Star Trek: The Next Generation (1990) and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1998). His filmography includes parts in Licensed to Love and Kill (Lindsay Shonteff, 1979), Cry Freedom (Richard Attenborough, 1987) and the Japanese heist film Lupin III (Ryuhei Kitamura, 2014). In 2000 Tate provided the voice of a character, Ozzie Mandrill, from the adventure game Escape from Monkey Island (LucasArts). Elaine Stevens is a Cork theatre stalwart who celebrated her 100th birthday in April 2020. Born in Wales she moved to Cork with her husband Alan who worked on the oil refinery in Whitegate. Stevens performed with the Everyman in the Little Theatre in Castle Street, at Father Matthew Hall and at the Palace. In 1967 Stevens won the All Ireland Best Actor Award for her performance in the Sidney Howard-Emlyn Williams play The Late Christopher Bean. O’Sullivan is seated alongside festival director Dermot Breen on his left and committee member Gus Healy on his right. Healy was Lord Mayor of Cork from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. A St Finbarr statuette, inside a wooden box, is being exchanged and, on the table behind Lynch, we can make out a stack of boxed festival awards next to a crystal decanter. The Fianna Fáil politician Jack Lynch (1917-1999) was born in Shandon, Cork. He went to school in the North Mon and was by all accounts a great sportsman originally playing with Glen Rovers in Blackpool, Cork. Lynch loved sport and would credit it with teaching him how to be part of a team and how to cope with victory and defeat. He worked as parliamentary secretary for Eamon de Valera and succeeded Sean Lemass in 1966. Lynch would go on to serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. Laage is seated and smiling up at Neary as she takes her glass from him. She is wearing a light-coloured dress accessorised with a wide strap braclet, while Neary is in a dark suit and tie with a pin attached to the left lapel. Laage was a popular leading lady in French film during the 1950s. Notably, the Rita Hayworth role in The Lady from Shanghai (Orson Welles, 1947) was originally written for Barbara Laage.
