We recognise the filmmaker John Boorman standing at the far left in a cheque jacket. He stands alongside the Irish director Norman Cohen, in a dark jacket and short beard. Cohen was a familiar presence at the festival in the seventies, along with Lynda Bellingham and Linda Hayden who starred in his risqué comedies including Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Cohen, 1977) and Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers (Cohen, 1977). The 1974 film festival programme notes that Boorman and Cohen were both members of the International Jury for the Feature Films Competition that year which helps us date this photo. Sheamus Smith, wearing his distinctive glasses, stands on the far right of the photo. Smith was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). He published his memoir Off Screen (Gill and MacMillan) in 2007. A small number of festival programmes (eg <a href="https://corkfilmfest.ucc.ie/items/show/630">1970</a>) have a short history of the legend of St Finbarr. They note that St Finbarr is the patron saint of the Diocese of Cork; born in the sixth century at Raithleann near Bandon, he was the son of Amergin, a metal worker. We can see the back of the audience facing the stage with its empty white screen. The Pavilion Cinema was one of Ireland’s oldest cinemas having opened on Patrick Street in Cork in 1921. It was the first cinema in Cork to show ‘talkies’ with The Singing Fool (Lloyd Bacon, 1928) starring Al Jolson (cinematreasures.org). It shut down in 1989, with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Steven Spielberg, 1989), being its final movie.
