She is posing for the camera in a garden setting, wearing jeans and a denim shirt with some buttons undone to the waist. These might be the images Philbin sent to the Sunday World newspaper as part of her entry to the Miss Movie Girl competition which she would later win in 1973. Philbin, age 20 from Galway, was a former Tyler’s Model Girl, and a Salthill Princess. As part of her prize, she represented the film festival, and Ireland, at national and international events including the Arnhem Film Festival in Holland where she appeared on Dutch television and spoke on the radio there. The two are shown in conversation and an animated Warrington, wearing a belted mackintosh-style jacket, has his hand raised as he makes his point. While Breen, cigarette in mouth and pen in hand, looks up to Warrington as he speaks. John Warrington (1916-1998) was a BBC producer and director known for The Sky Larks (1958), The Men from Room 13 (1959) and Silent Evidence (1962). He was a producer for the BBC series The Grove Family (1957-1957) which was created by Roland Pertwee and Michael Pertwee, who also came to the film festival during the 1970s. Much-loved, in its day, The Grove Family, named after the BBC Lime Grove Studios, is generally regarded as the first British TV soap opera. The photo is undated but we can suggest the mid-fifties when Tóstal was inaugurated in Cork. The Cork Film Festival emerged from An Tóstal (1953-1958), which was a pageant, or festival, held around Ireland to celebrate Ireland’s national image. While this photo does not identify the ten council members we do recognise some of their faces from the archive. A young Dermot Breen stands in the middle at the back – he went on to found the film festival in 1956 and would run it until his death in 1978. Gus Healy (1904-1987) stands on the far left, hands in pocket. He was a Fianna Fáil politician who would later serve Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. A grey-haired Patrick ‘Pa’ McGrath stands at the centre of the group. He was a Fianna Fáil politician who represented Cork in Dáil Éireann between 1946 and 1956. McGrath served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1952 to 1956. He took an active part in the Irish War of Independence and was honoured by his comrades by appointing him chairman of the Cork City Old IRA Men’s Association. McGrath died suddenly in 1956 and was honoured by Taoiseach John A Costello in the Dáil, who spoke highly of him in the Dáil Éireann debate that June. Tom Nicholas was a founding member of the London Friends of Cork and often hosted events in London for the festival. The 1973 release date of The Exorcist helps us provisionally date this photo. The photo is undated but it was probably taken in 1971 during the recording of St Patrick’s Mass which was televised live from the Franciscan Church in Cork that year. Also in the picture is the Scottish tenor Canon Sydney MacEwan who featured in the recording with the choir of Trinity College Dublin - Trinity Chorale.  Born in East London in 1911 Philip Green had an extensive career in film-music composition. He was appointed the musical director for the Rank Organisation, whose many stars came to visit the festival in its earlier years, and composed hundreds of film scores and themes for popular television programmes during his career. However his conversion to Catholicism in the early 1970s contributed to his creation of this Mass, which he composed, produced, and recorded in 1970 before bringing it to Cork in 1971. Seemingly the Mass was a personal tribute of thanksgiving to both the Church and Ireland. He died in 1982 but his recording of St Patrick’s Mass, performed by Canon Sydney MacEwan and Trinity Chorale, is still available and can be streamed on-line. Canon MacEwan (1908-1991) sang traditional Scottish and Irish songs and during the 1940s-50s he toured North America, Australia, and New Zealand, trying to raise funds for the restoration of parish buildings. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music before becoming a priest and used the funds he made for his music to fund his religious work. MacEwan recorded almost 40 records before his death in 1991 and in Ireland we might know him best for his rendition of Queen of the May and Bring Flowers of the Rarest played over our radios every year on 1st of May. In 1962 Eamon Andrews featured him on the BBC show This is Your Life. The girls, in matching red frocks accessorised with a white headband, line up with the boys, in their black trousers and white shirts, across the chancel of the altar. The back of the photo notes that the children sitting on the chairs at the front of the choir are the young Donal Lehane and Grainne Breen – the daughter of the festival founder Dermot Breen and his wife Vida. This image is one of the few colour photographs in the archive and provides us with a beautiful rendition of the notable mosaic interior of the church. The mosaics were designed by the Italian artist Umberto Noni who counted his work at this church as one of his most accomplished creations. Syms, in a bright knee-length dress and cigarette in hand, is turned towards her companions, Bernard McDonagh and Noel Harrington, in conversation. The small group includes the festival director Dermot Breen on the left next to Frank O’Leary who was a member of the organising committee. The undated photo notes that the association of London friends was founded by Bernard McDonagh, a committee member of the London Film Society. Born in 1934, Sylvia Syms has a prolific film and television career. Her second film My Teenage Daughter (Herbert Wilcox, 1956) also starred Anna Neagle who was a visitor to the festival when My Teenage Daughter opened at the Savoy in 1956. Her films include Brendan Behan’s The Quare Fellow (Arthur Dreifuss, 1962), The Tamarind Seed (Blake Edwards, 1974) with Julie Andrews and Omar Sharif, Absolute Beginners (Julien Temple, 1986) with David Bowie and Patsy Kensit, and as the Queen Mother in The Queen (Stephen Frears, 2006) with Helen Mirren. Her television work includes Thatcher: The Final Days (Granada Television, 1991) where she starred as Margaret Thatcher. Her daughter Beatrice Edney (1962-) is also an English actor with many film and television appearances including Highlander (1986, 2000), Inspector Morse (1989), Lewis (2013), and Poldark (2015-2019). The uncredited photo was taken in Hollywood, USA, and was found among the archive papers. We note that a tribute programme of Stanely Kramer's work was introduced by Professor Robert Gessner at the Cork festival in 1966. Gessner chose six of Kramer's films for the festival and wrote an article for that year's programme. Kramer (1913-2001) was a renowned Oscar-winning film director and producer. In general, he made films that tried to address social issues such as racism, greed, and war. Kramer has an extensive filmography which includes The Defiant Ones (1958), Inherit the Wind (1960), Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) and the comedy film It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) starring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney. In this picture, Kramer is being presented the award by Katherine Hepburn (1907-2003) who had just finished Kramer’s Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner (1967) with Sidney Poitier and a frail Spencer Tracy, her partner of 26 years who would die soon after the film was made. Kramer also directed the German actor Heinz Rühmann in Ship of Fools (1965) starring Vivien Leigh in her final screen role. Rühmann came to the Cork festival and a couple of undated images of him can be seen in the festival archive. Since 2002 the Producers Guild of America awards the Stanley Kramer Award for films that "illuminate provocative social issues." In 2002 it was awarded to In America (2002) directed by the Irish playwright and director Jim Sheridan.
