The award is placed on a small circular table in a dining room where we can just make out some people milling around in the background. One of the men appear to be wearing a mayoral chain and given the date of the award we might suspect that this is the Fine Gael politician Jim Corr (1934-) who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1979. The award itself is distinctive consisting of three bronze, or pewter, skeletal attenuated figures, much in the style of the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. The figures are leaning in towards each other whilst holding their arms aloft towards a European Union logo similar to the Euro symbol. This euro symbol, adorned with a dove in this case, was (and is) a tangible symbol of European unity for citizens of the European Union. The Cork Film Festival was particularly indebted to European Union funding during this era via the MEDIA Programme of the European Union designed to support the European film and audio-visual industries. Dressed in white trousers and a checkered shirt, Peters is leaning back and holding a local guide book of Cork while smiling at the camera; her legs dangle over the chrome trim of the car’s radiator grill, next to the iconic Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star. Two small Irish flags adorn the car either side of the grill which might suggest that this was the Lord Mayor’s car. Behind Peters in the distance we can see the imposing three spires of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral. Designed by William Burges, and built 1827-81 from Cork limestone, the cathedral is located on the south side of the River Lee in Cork City. Burges designed it to be compact in a French Gothic style, with a narrow interior that soars to a great height. Its three spires stand out for their intricate architectural details including gargoyles and such embellishments throughout. Approximately 844 sculptures adorn the interior and exterior including 32 gargoyles and the twelve Apostles of The Last Judgement at the Tympanum over the entrance door. In this photo we cannot really make out the copper gilt-edged Resurrection Angle, also known fondly as the 'Goldie Angel' by locals, which adorns the main spire in place of a cross - a gift from the Victorian architect to the city. Mollie Peters was the stage name of Vivien Mollie Humphrey, an English actor best known for her role as Nurse Patricia Fearing opposite Sean Connery's 007 in Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965). She was infamous for being the first Bond girl to take off her clothes on-screen - earning the franchise its first X-rating. Peters had a short-lived film career due mainly to contractual disagreements with her agent which forestalled her career. This was taken in 1956 during the first edition of the Cork International Film Festival and would have been a momentous occasion. President O’Kelly, wearing a top hat, is shown at the head of the entourage, head bowed. On his right Elliman has his arm linked with O’Kelly and is looking towards him as if listening to O’Kelly speak. The Lord Mayor of Cork, Patrick McGrath, wearing the mayoral gown and sterling silver chain of office, is behind the President coming up the marble steps of the Savoy. He is accompanied by others identified on the photo’s mount as Mr A Elliman, Major TD Hallinan, Fr Cormac and Mr CM Conroy. Patrick McGrath was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who represented Cork in Dáil Éireann between 1946 and 1956. He served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1952 to 1956. McGrath took an active part in the Irish War of Independence and was honoured by his comrades by appointing him chairman of the Cork City Old IRA Men’s Association. During his term of office he welcomed Laurel and Hardy to the townhall during their visit to Cork in September 1953. He died suddenly in 1956 and was honoured by Taoiseach, John A Costello, in the Dáil on his passing who said of McGrath: “The late Deputy was kind, courteous and charitable … He was an eloquent and forcible speaker and made many useful contributions to the debates of the Dáil on national questions.” (Dáil Éireann debate Wednesday, 20 June 1956, Vol. 158 No.5.) President Seán Thomas O’Kelly (1882-1966) was born in inner-city Dublin. He worked in the National Library in Dublin and was an subscriber to the Celtic Literary Society. O’Kelly was one of Ireland’s early leaders of the Sinn Féin party. He was an associate of the Sinn Féin founder Arthur Griffith and from 1913 he helped to raise the Irish Volunteers. During the Easter Rising of 1916 he worked out of the GPO with provisional plans to set up as an administrator of the Irish Republic which never came to fruition. He met his future wife, Mary Ryan, during the Rising and married her in 1918. O’Kelly was later imprisoned in Britain for his part in the Rising before escaping back to Ireland and working with Sinn Féin. He was a close friend of Éamon de Valera, also opposing the Anglo-Irish Treaty, and when de Valera set up the new Republican party Fianna Fáil in 1926 O’Kelly joined it becoming vice-president. O’Kelly was a devout catholic but his membership of the Knights of Columbanus caused de Valera much consternation but O’Kelly refused to relinquish his membership of the Knights. He succeeded Douglas Hyde as President of Ireland and served two terms from June 1945 to June 1959 retiring from public life after his second term. The President is accompanied in this picture by Dublin-born Louis Elliman. Elliman managed many of Ireland's cinema screens during the 1950s and brought film production to Ireland opening the Ardmore Studios, with Emmet Dalton, in 1958. Behind them there is evident joy in the faces of the staff as they jostle around the actors seeking an autograph. The photograph identifies the location as the Beamish and Crawford brewery and, based on the wooden panelling in this picture, this might be the tudor-framed reception room of the iconic Counting House on South Main Street in Cork. The brewery was established in 1792 by William Beamish and William Crawford. It was once Ireland’s biggest brewery until overtaken by Guinness in 1833. It closed in March 2009 and its site on South Main Street, is currently being converted into student accommodation and a possible events centre. It has a special place in the cultural memory of Corkonians and former Beamish workers note that the brewery was more than just a workplace but was the very ‘heart of Cork’. The Belgian actor Bettine La Beau (1932-2015) was known for her television, film and radio appearances in the UK. In particular she would be associated with the long-running Benny Hill Show (1969) from 1971 to 1972, The Prisoner (1967), and Call My Bluff. She had an uncredited appearance in the first James Bond film Dr. No (Terence Young, 1962) and small parts in a number of films. Her radio appearances included regular appearances on the BBC World Service programme Animal, Vegetable, Mineral? Her personal life is poignant as she was separated from her parents during World War II and held in two concentration camp during the Holocaust before escaping eventually to England. She would later work as a public speaker speaking about her experience of the Holocaust and authored a book Help Yourself to Happiness in 1999. The third actor in this picture is Heidelinde Weis (1940-). She is an Austrian actor whose film work around the time she came to Cork, in 1969, include The Man Outside (Samuel Gallu, 1967), and Something for Everyone (Harold Prince,1970). Her 1964 film directed by Michael Pfleghar, Die Tote von Beverly Hills (Dead Women From Beverly Hills), was re-released in 2019 as a digitally restored HD version. It has a place in German film history for its invitation to Cannes in 1964, where it won the Palme d’Or and for taking the ‘Bambi’ award for most artistically valuable film in 1965. The stairway is marked with the Aer Lingus logo and we might guess that this picture was taken at Cork Airport. Philbin in large sunglasses, is standing on the stairway, wearing a white suit accessorised with a sash marked ‘CFI Movie Girl.’ She is accompanied by her sister and others identified as Jack O'Sullivan, Brian Coomber, Mary O'Keeffe, Charlie Cullinane and Fergus Gilligan. Miss Movie Girl was a ‘Rose of Tralee’ type contest that ran for a few brief years in the seventies. Run in conjunction with the Sunday World newspaper, it was a contest of county representatives vying for the ultimate title of Miss Movie Girl. It was an enticing affair, the winner would meet with celebrities, be showered with prizes and go on to promote the festival throughout Ireland. In 2015 a former Miss Movie Girl competitor, Catherine Tracy, was tracked down and invited to attend that years film festival as a guest of honour. She remembered her time in the Miss Movie Girl competition fondly and recalled meeting the French film director François Truffaut along with the blues guitar legend Rory Gallagher and the English actor Trevor Howard who were in Cork in that year. They are posing amidst the roof-top detritus of abandoned steel poles and advertising hoarding while below them the hustle and bustle of city life continues. One of the girls sits on the wall parapet while the other leans insouciantly against a hoarding pole; they seem to be on the roof of the 60-foot fly-tower of the Opera House. They are both wearing dark-coloured tops, with the festival logo for the 41st Cork International Film Festival which took place in October 1996, which helps us date this photo. The Cork Opera House was conceived in 1852, following the Cork Exhibition, and opened in 1855. The building was originally called the ‘Athenaeum’ and eventually renamed Cork Opera House in 1877. It burnt down in 1955 and was reopened by President Éamon de Valera in October 1965. In this reconstruction, it retained a somewhat bleak wall of brick, with the equally bleak fly-tower used to accommodate scene changes. In 2003 renovation works on the façade of the building, and the surrounding Emmet Place, was completed but did not impact upon the fly-tower. The fly-tower infamously provided the backdrop to the iconic Toyota roof sign which occupied 3 sides of the tower on the north, east, and west. In 2019 the Toyota sign was replaced by UCC signage in a new collaboration with UCC, and the old Toyota letters, at 1.5 metres tall, were recommissioned by the Greek artist <a href="https://www.billbalaskas.com/">Bill Balaskas</a>. Balaskas transformed the six Toyota letters into a public art installation called 'Red Air'. The panoramic view from the fly-tower here looks out towards Emmet Place below, which has since been redeveloped into a plaza-like square, and along Lavitts Quay. Traffic lines up across the River Lee at Camden Place, from the direction of the three-span St. Patrick’s Bridge beyond. The silver-plated single-column trophy is engraved with the Cork coat of arms on the front. The award is topped with a film reel with film ribbon looped around its core and the film ribbon motif is replicated at various levels of the column. The Cork coat of arms shows a ship between two towers which are said to represent the King's and Queen's castles which stood at the entrance to the watergates of Cork City. The Latin motto attached to the Cork coat of arms is Statio Bene Fide Carinis which is taken from Virgil's Aeneid and is commonly translated as 'Safe Harbour for Ships'. The back of the photo identifies only Justin Keating who we see seated on the far right in the front row, looking down laughing. We recognise the former Lord Mayor, Gus Healy, from other images in the archive, and he is seated in the front row on the far left, next to his wife. The audience are all dressed in evening wear, dinner suits for the men and evening dresses for the women. They appear to be waiting for the show to start and are animated chatting to each other or looking around. Ashtrays are placed in intervals in front of the first row guests, most of whom are holding a programme in their hands. Justin Keating (1930-2009) was an Irish Labour party politician who would serve in Dáil Éireann under Liam Cosgrave as Minister for Industry and Commerce from 1973 to 1977. He was a key figure in the creation of the Labour party created by Brendan Corish in the 1960s and ushered in a new era of politics at the time. He also worked as a veterinary surgeon, and lectured at UCD, and was a journalist for RTÉ during its early days. Keating also represented Ireland at the European level serving twice as an MEP. He was the President of the Humanist Association of Ireland (HAI) whose tribute to him on his death notes that he was passionate about Ireland and the role of Europe in the world. A young Legendre, in a herringbone tweed jacket, is shown in profile listening to a Marcus on the right. Both are wearing festival pins on their jackets and if we zoom into those pins we can see that the pin on Legendre’s jacket is marked ‘delegate’ and the pin on Marcus’ jacket is marked ‘Jury’. The room behind them is crowded and, with Marcus holding a drink in his hand, we might guess that this is a reception held for the delegates of the film festival. There is no information to corroborate the identity of Legendre but we appreciate the presence of local man turned film director, Louis Marcus, at the festival. Marcus was born in Cork City to an Irish Jewish family. He attended University College Cork before beginning his career in Dublin as assistant director on Mise Éire (George Morrison, 1959) and Saoirse? (George Morrison, 1961). Marcus would continue to work on Gael-Linn documentaries until 1973. His first documentary <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art</a> (1958) on his friend the Cork-born sculptor, Seamus Murphy (1907-1975), is of particular interest to us as Murphy designed the bronze St Finbarr statuette that was presented to prize-winners at the Cork Film Festival for some years.
